The College soon became a recognized center of higher education in the Ottoman Empire, and attracted without discrimination a large number of students from all over the Empire. Daniel Bliss, the founding father of the college, quickly organized a medical department to fulfill the needs of the region. After the language change in the medical department from Arabic to English, non-Arabic speaking students, among whom were many Armenians, started enrolling in the College. 7KLVWKHVLV³$3RUWUDLWRI$UPHQLDQ6WXGHQW/LIHDWWKH6\ULDQ3URWHVWDQW College: 1885-´H[DPLQHVWKHGHQRPLQDWLRQDOVRFLDODQGHFRQRPLFEDFNJURXQGRI more than 230 Armenian students who came from Anatolia, anxious to study medicine at the SPC. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of SPC education on those students in the construction of an Armenian national consciousness. LIST OF ARMENIAN MEDICAL ALUMNI WHO DIED DURING WWI AND AFTER ........................................................ 124 BIBLIOGRAPHY ............................................................................................ 130 IX CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In the early evening of June 26, 1923, a large congregation of doctors and pharmacists gathered in the upper foyer of West Hall, at the American University of Beirut, to witness the unveiling of a tablet inscribed with the names of thirty-two medical alumni who perished in the course of World War I.1 Seventeen of these medical SURIHVVLRQDOVZHUH$QDWROLDQ$UPHQLDQVZKRKDGFRPHWR%HLUXWLQWKHHDUO\¶VWR study medicine at the Syrian Protestant College (renamed American University of Beirut after 1920). During the Lebanese civil strife, in 1976, the bronze memorial was moved to WKHXQLYHUVLW\¶V&ROOHJH+DOOWRSURWHFWLWIURPGDPDJHDQGWKHSRVVLELOLW\RIWKHIW± but it lay there for years, forgotten, until research conducted to write this thesis recovered the lost tablet and the story behind its construction. On 1 November 2012, a new tablet was constructed and permanently installed in its original location in commemoration of AUB medical doctors, pharmacists and nurses who saved the college from closure during the war and sacrificed their lives for the well-being of others. A. A Brief History of the Syrian Protestant College (SPC) In December 1866 the Syrian Protestant College (hereafter SPC) opened its doors with four professors and sixteen students. The College soon became a recognized center of higher education in the Ottoman Empire, and attracted a large number of students from all over the Empire. Daniel Bliss, the founding father of the college, quickly 1 For further information on the Memorial tablet see: Al-Kulliyah 9, no.8 (1923); Al- Kulliyah 12, no.5 (1926). 1 organized a medical department to fulfill the needs of the region and produce an elite native leadership, which could assist in molding the socio-economic, religious and political nature of the Arab provinces. In 1883, with the language change in the medical department from Arabic to English, the SPC began appealing to Armenian, Greek and Persian students as well; students eager to study medicine and pharmacy came to AUB from Anatolia and Persia. The SPC and the American missionaries with their educational mission tried to µFLYLOL]H¶WKHORFDOVE\LQWURGXFLQJ:HVWHUQLGHDOVUHODWHGWRSURJUHVVGHPRFUDF\OLEHUW\ and equality. At the same time Sultan Abdul Hamid II and his officials endeavored to counter the missionaries by introducing modern schools and colleges which targeted primarily Muslim students from various ethnicities. In both of these cases, education became an important socialization agent and played a pivotal role in agitating national consciousness. The bulk of the correspondence of the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the period was with the United States and this was chiefly concerned about the American mission schools. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the encounter between the Ottoman officialdom and the American Protestant missionaries in Ottoman Turkey during the successive regimes of Sultan Abdülhamid II and the Committee of Union and Progress, the Unionists in the period of 1876-1914.

    Ottoman Official Attitudes Towards American Missionaries Cagri Erhan Introduction The history of Turkish-American relations go back to the 1790s when American sailors met with Turks in North Africa (Barbary Coast). During the period between 1800 and 1830s American travelers and merchants frequently visited Turkish harbors, such as Izmir (Smyrna), Alexandria and Beirut. However, official diplomatic relations were not inaugurated until 1830 when the Treaty of Commerce and Navigation was signed in Istanbul and a charge d’affaires, David Porter was appointed as the American representative to the Sublime Porte (the Ottoman Court) in 1831.1 Along with the commercial relations, American mission- ary efforts in the Ottoman lands always occupied a high place in the bilateral agenda. In fact, most of the diplomatic con- flicts in the nineteenth and early twentieth century Turkish- American relations originated from the American missionar- ies’ gradually expanding activities and the Ottoman attitudes towards them. This paper, after a brief survey on the expansion of the missionary activities in the Ottoman Empire, will touch upon the main points of dispute between the Sublime Porte and the missionaries under three headings: “Missionaries and Cagri Erhan, Le c t u re r Dep a r tment of International Rel a t i o n s Ankara University, Ankara, Turkey 315 Ottoman Subjects”; “Missionary Schools and other Facilities” and “Publishing Activities of the Missionaries”. This brief study of the immigration of the Jacobite Christians originally from Harput, Turkey who settled in New England, shows a variety of distinct method(s) of identity preservation and transmission to subsequent generations, especially in regard to personal and group identity structures. These people, sometimes referred to as “Jacobite Syrians” by early Western travellers and missionaries, identified themselves as the “sons of Asshur” in 1842.

Gineh ihrar gudder’ehn [They have found each other again]1 Abstract A good quality photograph of seven Armenian Professors on the faculty of Euphrates College, Kharpert city during the Genocide has been located. It fits perfectly a textual commentary encountered at the Hoover Institution Archives. The commentary, missing the photograph to which it referred, had been typed by Ruth A. Parmelee, M.D. who worked in Harpoot and Mezreh as a medical missionary at the time of the Genocide. Six professors referred to in the missing photograph ended up dead either by direct “murder” or by “privations brought on by maltreatment.” Only one was “the sole survivor of the group.” The chance encounter of a temporarily disconnected photograph that allowed a match-up with this existing, but similarly ‘disconnected caption,’ is a good example of ‘rejoining’ of ‘mates.’ They have finally, to adopt a turn of phrase used by Armenian villagers of the region and period, “found each other again.” The main title of this paper is not an error. Normally one tries to provide a reliable caption for a photograph.

In particular, it addresses the status of these communities within the Ottoman millet system, discusses the spoken languages of the Syriacs, and their relations with the Armenians. As for the specific case of the Syriacs of Kharberd (Kharput), the paper presents historical evidence of their presence in the city, provides snapshots of their social, economic and religious lives, educational system and local press. The paper shows that the Syriacs of Kharberd were destined to share the fate of the Armenians during the 1915 Genocide and briefly presents their expatriate communities in the United States.
