Reviewed by Monika Rice (Gratz College) Published on H-Judaic (June, 2020) Commissioned by Barbara Krawcowicz (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) Printable Version: http://www.h-net.org/reviews/showpdf.php?id=54856 Holocaust commemoration as an expansion of Holocaust memory studies entered scholarship in the 1990s with the seminal works of Tom Segev (The Seventh Million: The Israelis and the Holocaust [1991]), James Young (The Texture of Memory: Holocaust Memorials and Meaning in Europe, Israel, and America [1993]), and Peter Novick (The Holocaust in American Life [1999]). Michael Steinlauf’s groundbreaking work on Holocaust memory in Eastern Europe, Bondage to the Dead: Poland and the Memory of the Holocaust (1996), complemented these works that dealt, mostly, with Western and Israeli Holocaust remembrance. Since then, the field of Holocaust memory has proliferated in the last two decades, transforming the Holocaust from an event remembered as committed by specific historical agents (Germans and their collaborators) to a symbol of universal evil.[1] The memory of the destruction of European Jews, or, perhaps, its postmemory (considering that its carriers are second and third postwar generations), has acquired cosmopolitan and global qualities, which involve its “universalization, de-territorialization, decontextualization and mediatization.”[2] Surprisingly not included in this globalized trend of Holocaust memory are the countries of Eastern Europe, where the mass murder of the Jews took place. -

Strasbourg, 3 September 2003 MIN-LANG/PR (2003) 7 EUROPEAN CHARTER FOR REGIONAL OR MINORITY LANGUAGES Initial Periodical Report presented to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in accordance with Article 15 of the Charter ARMENIA The First Report of the Republic of Armenia According to Paragraph 1 of Article 15 of European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages June 2003, Yerevan 2 INTRODUCTION The Republic of Armenia signed the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages on May 11, 2001. In respect of Armenia the Charter has come into force since May 1, 2002. The RA introduces the following report according to Paragraph 1 of Article 15 of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. This report has been elaborated and developed by the State Language Board at the Ministry of Education and Science based on the information submitted by the relevant ministries NGOs and administrative offices, taking into consideration the remarks and suggestions made by them and all parties interested, while discussing the following report. PART I Historical Outline Being one of the oldest countries in the world, for the first time in its new history Armenia regained its independence on May 28, 1918. The first Republic existed till November 29, 1920, when Armenia after forced sovetalization joined the Soviet Union, becoming on of the 15 republics. As a result of referendum the Republic of Armenia revived its independence on September 21, 1991. Armenia covers an area of 29,8 thousand km2, the population is nearly 32000001. Armenia borders on Iran, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. -

International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 4, No. 6(1); April 2014 The American Protestant Missionary Network in Ottoman Turkey, 1876-1914 Devrim Ümit PhD Assistant Professor Founding and Former Chair Department of International Relations Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Karabuk University Turkey Abstract American missionaries have long been the missing link in the study of the late Ottoman period despite the fact that they left their permanent trade in American as well as Western conceptions of the period such as “Terrible Turk” and “Red Sultan” just to name a few. From the landing of the first two American Protestant missionaries, Levi Parsons and Pliny Fisk, on the Ottoman Empire, as a matter of fact on the Near East, in early 1820, until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, American missionaries occupied the increasing attention of the Ottoman bureaucracy in domestic and foreign affairs while the mission work in the Ottoman Empire established the largest investment of the American Board of Commissionaries for Foreign Missions (A.B.C.F.M.) in the world, even above China and India, on the eve of the war. The bulk of the correspondence of the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the period was with the United States and this was chiefly concerned about the American mission schools. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the encounter between the Ottoman officialdom and the American Protestant missionaries in Ottoman Turkey during the successive regimes of Sultan Abdülhamid II and the Committee of Union and Progress, the Unionists in the period of 1876-1914. -

The Armenian Genocide
The Armenian Genocide During World War I, the Ottoman Empire carried out what most international experts and historians have concluded was one of the largest genocides in the world's history, slaughtering huge portions of its minority Armenian population. In all, over 1 million Armenians were put to death. To this day, Turkey denies the genocidal intent of these mass murders. My sense is that Armenians are suffering from what I would call incomplete mourning, and they can't complete that mourning process until their tragedy, their wounds are recognized by the descendants of the people who perpetrated it. People want to know what really happened. We are fed up with all these stories-- denial stories, and propaganda, and so on. Really the new generation want to know what happened 1915. How is it possible for a massacre of such epic proportions to take place? Why did it happen? And why has it remained one of the greatest untold stories of the 20th century? This film is made possible by contributions from John and Judy Bedrosian, the Avenessians Family Foundation, the Lincy Foundation, the Manoogian Simone Foundation, and the following. And others. There are between six and seven million alive today, and less than half live in the Republic of Armenia, a small country south of Georgia and north of Iran. The rest live around the world in countries such as the US, Russia, France, Lebanon, and Syria. They're an ancient people who originally came from Anatolia some 2,500 years ago. -

SORROW IS TURNED TO JOY: A PLAY ABOUT THE 1909 ADANA MASSACRES, STAGED BY ARMENIAN GENOCIDE SURVIVORS IN GREECE1 Matthias BjØrnlund & Iben Hendel Philipsen Abstract: In April 1924, a group of Armenian women genocide survivors in the care of a Danish missionary organization in Thessaloniki staged a play; Sorrow is Turned to Joy, based on the 1909 Adana massacres. The article briefl y explores the framework and context of the missionary organization, the actors, and the theatrical performance, followed by a translation of the entire play from Danish into English. Background The year was 1924. In the Greek city of Thessaloniki (Salonica), the small Danish Evangelical missionary organization Industrimissionen i Armenien (The Industrial Mission in Armenia; IM) had established workshops, homes, and educational facilities for Armenian genocide survivors, mainly widows, young women, and children, from their base in the Papafi quarter. The organization was founded in Denmark in the autumn of 1921 under the motto of “Hjælp til Selvhjælp” (“Help to Self-Help”), and their fi rst mission fi eld was in Greek-controlled Rodosto (Tekirdag), a city overfl owing with tens of thousands of destitute Christian refugees from Asia Minor. According to the memoirs of one of the IM missionaries, Margrethe Jepsen, on their arrival in the spring of 1922, the shores at Rodosto were fi lled with dead and dying people, mostly women and children, often half-naked and abused, sometimes pregnant from rape and tattooed by the perpetrators.2 However, like most other non-Turks and non-Muslims, the IM staff and the Armenians in their care had to relocate head over heels (albeit under the formal protection of British, French, and Italian troops in the region) after only a few months as Kemalist forces took over Eastern Thrace and the city.3 1. -

Abstract Because finding a job in the apparel and textile sector can be a challenging task for the graduates of the apparel and textile programs in Armenia, the focus of this study is to find the attributes of successful small apparel businesses in Armenia and to identify the knowledge and skills graduates need to secure a job, to succeed at it, and potentially open their own small apparel business. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to: 1) identifying the factors leading to the success of small apparel businesses in Armenia; 2) learn what obstacles hinder the success of small apparel businesses in Armenia; 3) gain understanding of how the small apparel businesses in Armenia address the needs and wants of their customers; and 4) establish what type of professional development would contribute to the success of the small businesses. The study also: 1) explores what knowledge and skills successful apparel businesses in Armenia are looking for in new employees; and 2) provides recommendations for curriculum changes at Armenian apparel and textile programs which would help the graduates of Apparel and Textile programs in finding a job in the apparel and textile industry or in starting their own businesses. -
