Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, KG (24 June mours that he had arranged for his wife’s death continued 1532 or 1533[note 1] – 4 September 1588) was an English throughout his life, despite the coroner’s jury's verdict of nobleman and the favourite and close friend of Elizabeth accident. For 18 years he did not remarry for Queen Eliz- I from her first year on the throne until his death. Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract In their Cantiones sacrae (1575), court musicians William Byrd and Thomas Tallis declared that ‘music is indispensable to the state’ (necessarium reipub.). Yet although the relationship between Elizabethan politics and literature has been studied often, there has been little research into the political functions of music. Most accounts of court music consist of documentary research into the personnel, institutions and performance occasions, and generally assume that music’s functions were limited to entertainment and displays of magnificence. However, Elizabethans believed that musical concord promoted a social harmony that would ease the process of government; hence politics and music were seen as closely connected. This thesis is an interdisciplinary investigation into the role of music in constructing royal and courtly identities and influencing Elizabeth’s policies and patronage. -

There are, he says, ‘no unusual or obsolete words, no hard or uncouth phrases in it, but everything is expressed as clearly and plainly as words can do it’. Of course, Beveridge is emphasising that ‘the meanest person in the congregation...as well as the greatest scholar’ can be edified by the services; but he is also writing as a contemporary of Bishop Sprat who had praised the Royal Society for exacting from its members a ‘close, naked, natural way of speaking ...bringing all things as near the mathematical plainness as they can’1. Probably few now would say that the 1662 Prayer Book contains no unusual or obsolete words—we are three hundred years further away from it than Beveridge—but perhaps even in his day some words were beginning to feel archaic2. -

Submitted: November, 1989. bs. 1 The Evolution of Puritan Mentality in an Essex Cloth Town: Dedham and the Stour Valley, 1560-1640 A.R. Pennie Summary of thesis The subject of this thesis is the impact of religious reformation on the inhabitants of a small urban centre, with some reference to the experience of nearby settle- ments. Dedham has a place in national history as a centre of the Elizabethan Puritan Movement but the records of the Dedham Conference (the local manifestation of that movement), also illustrate the development of Reformed religion in Dedham and associated parishes. The contents of the thesis may be divided into four sections. The first of these concerns the material life of the inhabitants of Dedham and the way in which this generated both the potential for social cohesion and the possibility of social conflict. The second section examines the attempt at parish reformation sponsored by the ministers associated with the Dedham Conference and the militant and exclusive doctrine of the Christian life elaborated by the succeeding generation of preachers. The third element of the thesis focuses on the way in which the inhabitants articulated the expression of a Reformed or Puritan piety and, on occasion, the rejection of features of that piety. The ways in which the townspeople promoted the education of their children, the relief of the poor and the acknowledgement of ties of kinship and friendship, have been examined in terms of their relationship to a collective mentality characterized by a strong commitment to 'godly' religion. -
The Marian Exile and Religious Self-Identity: Rethinking the Origins of Elizabethan Puritanism

Issue 1 (2015): 17-36 DOI 10.1515/perc-2015-0002 THE MARIAN EXILE AND RELIGIOUS SELF-IDENTITY: RETHINKING THE ORIGINS OF ELIZABETHAN PURITANISM ANGELA RANSON * University of York ABSTRACT. This paper challenges historians’ portrayal of Elizabethan puritanism as rooted in the Marian exile of 1553-1558, through a fresh examination of three exiles who have been de- scribed as early puritans: James Pilkington, John Jewel, and Laurence Humphrey. By studying the value they placed on church unity, this paper brings out the fundamental differences be- tween the early reformers and the later puritans. It also demonstrates that the religious self- identity of these men pre-dated the accession of Mary. Thus, their exile was a means of strength- ening their faith, not finding it, and their return meant that there was more continuity between the Edwardian and Elizabethan churches than is often allowed in current scholarship. KEY WORDS: Religious self-identity, Protestant, exile, puritan, unity Introduction The reign of the Catholic Mary between 1553 and 1558 often provides a con- venient dividing line for the historiography of the English Reformation. The Reformation of Edward VI, which came before it, is portrayed much as is Edward himself: well-meaning and generally sound, but tragically lost far too soon. In contrast, the Elizabethan Reformation which followed Mary’s at- tempt to return to the Church of Rome is described as comparatively slow and awkward, plagued with the problems caused by three major parties. These were: the papists who still adhered to Rome, the conservatives who had managed to remain in England during the Marian years, and the exiles who returned ready to establish a new church that followed the Genevan ex- ample. -

THE NAUNTON PEDIGREE AND FAMILY PAPERS By FRANCISW. STEER, F.S.A. Unclaimed money in Chancery has afforded a fascination for many people, but one never seems to hear of a successful claimant. Members of the Naunton family appear to have been concerned from time to time in this unprofitable exercise, and correspondence and other papers deposited in the West Sussex Record Office by Mr. W. G. S. Naunton provide material for a first-class detective story with a genealogical flavour. As these papers are now in a repository at some distance from the county to which they princi- pally relate, it may be a convenience to those interested in Suffolk history to put their existence on record and leave the unravelling of the full story of the vicissitudes of the family to anyone who feels inclined to attempt the solution of a mystery which has baffled other investigators. Of the antiquity and noble descent of the Naunton family there can be no question. Pedigrees will be found in the Visitation of Suffolk, 1664 (Harleian Society, vol. 61, p. 100), and in Suffolkin the XVIIth century (1902), pp. 226-8; various other references are listed in J. B. Whitmore, A GenealogicalGuide(1953), p. 367. As the Leman family also feature in this genealogical tangle, the reader is referred to Whitmore (p. 308) for references to their pedigrees. Mr. George Ward Naunton and Mr. George Herbert Naunton, grandfather and father respectively of Mr. W. G. S. Naunton, the present owner of the documents, were both keenly interested in their family history and carried on a long correspondence with various relatives, with members of the Leman family, and with record searchers. -

Abstract This thesis examines the development of military culture in, and its effects on, early modern English society. Militarism during the late Elizabethan and early Stuart periods was not reinforced by military institutions directly interfering with the private lives of individuals, or by controlling the thoughts and actions of the whole nation. It was, however, strongly influenced by the culture of a military elite, represented by leading noblemen such as Leicester, Sidney, Essex, and Prince Henry, who paid considerable attention to the theatrical aspects of formal and ceremonial occasions and how their military role was portrayed in art and literature. Unlike the usual traditional portrayal of these prominent figures as incompetent military leaders who rushed blindly forwards in pursuit of military glory, we will see that through their aristocratic patronage of various art forms they promoted their image as competent Protestant warriors, and helped the public to be receptive to a variety of military ideas.
