We are getting to the point where we don’t have to interact with people in the physical: e-mail, instant messaging, texting, tweeting, and social networking. Are we having real conversations? There is no intonation in an e-mail or text message. Doesn’t intonation, body language, and facial expressions make up half of the experience in a conversation? Merriam-Webster defines “conversation” as such: oral exchange of Western civilization has been captivated by the electronic sentiments, observations, opinions, or ideas. -

Episode Four, Sunday Dinners Boiled Fruit Cake Submitted by Helen Ingredients 4oz margarine or butter 6oz caster sugar 6oz currants 6oz sultanas 2oz mixed peel 8 fl oz water 1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1 heaped teaspoon mixed spice 2 large eggs – beaten 4 oz plain flour 4oz self-raising flour A pinch of salt Method 1. Into a large saucepan add the margarine or butter, caster sugar, currants, sultanas, mixed peel, water, bicarbonate of soda & mixed spice; bring to a rolling boil and cook for 1 minute. 2. Cool the mixture for 15 minutes, stirring often, before gradually adding the beaten eggs followed by the plain flour, self-raising flour & the salt. 3. Stir well then turn into a greased & lined 2lb loaf-tin. 4. Bake in the oven for 1 hr 15 minutes at 140°C. All recipes have been submitted by members of the public. Nowadays, it is portrayed as the necessary philosophy of socio-economic life, seemingly driving both companies and cities, to engage in an all-out competitive struggle for resources. However, competition between cities is neither ‘natural’ nor a ‘macro-structural effect’ of contemporary urbanism and state restructuring but a dynamic and relational ensemble of socio-spatial policy processes that connect and disconnect cities, scales and wider policy networks. For European cities, the engineering of inter-urban competition is a state-led political and economic project: it is not a coherent project of the EU but a partial assemblage of different policy processes that have uneven consequences and that are contestable and contested. Instead of looking at inter-urban competition and competitive bidding solely as phenomena that are reflecting and reinforcing class interests, state projects or hegemonic ideologies, it is more productive to include them into a relational and processual analysis and focus on how these processes of inter-city rivalries are actually unfolding and on the specific labor practices that make them possible. -

Munro alias Saki EA Gamini Fonseka1 Abstract ‚The Lumber Room‛ by Hector Hugh Munro(1870-1916),who wrote 1Department of under the penname ‚Saki‛, is a short story that covers the survival English and struggle of the juvenile Nicholas growing in the care of some Linguistics, authoritarian adults. From Dialectology to standard language in the Asturian Linguistic Domain AbstRAct: This piece of work seeks to make known that the Asturian language normalization process began before the birth of Dialectology as an academic discipline. The appearance of this, at the end of the 19th century, does not set a constraint to the achievement of a standard language. Problems between Dialectology and the standard language come up, above all, due to the insistence of certain cultural and academic institutions on breaking the possibilities of the standard language leaning on the existence of different dialectal varieties. Nevertheless, as we will see, this problem is essentially ideological and, as a consequence, surmountable. Key words: Dialectology, Standard Asturian language, ideological stance, normalization process. Banana Custard Tart
Banana Custard Tart British puddings and custard are synonymous with each other. The go hand in hand; treacle tart and custard, apple pie and custard. Even the French who recon they've invented everything ever cooked, every dish in the food chain, every recipe, begrudgingly acknowledge that custard is British - why can't they call it that though? Crème Anglaise! There is custard and a custard, the latter we take to be baked - like baked egg custard, cabinet pudding, diplomat pudding, crème caramel, bread and butter pudding, lemon curd tart and this week's banana custard tart recipe. One of my favourite desserts being banana custard. The simple perfection of custard made to the exact velocity so as to suspend perfectly, the sliced banana. Cut the banana too thin and it disintegrates, too thick and it sinks to the bottom. At home I'm not adverse to using Birds custard powder - although I'd be chucked out the chef's magic circle if I used it on the dessert menu at work. Doctor Bird invented the powder because his wife was allergic to eggs. Incidentally, Chinese restaurants use custard powder and sugar to dip meat in before deep frying for things like deep fried chilli beef. The corn flour element to custard powder gives the meat a chewy crisp coating. Serves 6 Ingredients For the pastry 1 egg 1 egg yolk 75g icing sugar 115g softened butter 300g plain flour For the banana mix 50g butter 4 or 5 bananas, diced 25ml dark rum 25g brown sugar For the custard 4 egg yolks 50g caster sugar 550ml whipping cream For the caramel sauce 115g caster sugar 50ml water 115ml double cream Method To make the pastry, mix the egg, egg yolk and icing sugar together. -
