Abstract This thesis examines the theme of women’s madness in the 1960s and 1970s through the works of four EngLish and French writers and fiLm-makers: ChantaL Akerman, Emma Santos, Jane Arden and Mary Barnes. It examines how these four writers and fiLm-makers inscribe madness into their texts from a socioLogicaL angLe, presenting the texts and fiLms discussed as socio-historicaL artefacts whiLe anaLysing each writer and fiLm-maker’s representation of women’s madness. Inspired by psychoLogist PhylLis Chesler, who argues that madness is tied to sociaLLy defined gender roLes and used to demarcate vioLations of expected gendered behaviour, this research anaLyses various manifestations of ‘madness’ from the everyday madness of ChantaL Akerman, to psychiatricaLLy incarcerated madness in the texts of Emma Santos, to madness infLuenced by anti-psychiatry through the works of Jane Arden, to compLete immersion in anti-psychiatry with Mary Barnes. The interdiscipLinary and cross-cuLturaL nature of this thesis combines fieLds from both EngLish and French studies, from the study of femaLe writers and fiLm-makers, psychoanaLytic theory, the history of psychiatry and how they intersect with gender combined with contemporary feminist writings of phiLosophy, psychoLogy, and theoLogy. ii Acknowledgements Many thanks to my supervisory team, Dr Kate Ince and Professor Lisa Downing, and my academic advisor Dr Stephen Forcer for aLL your guidance and support.     genealogy Article Foucault’s Darwinian Genealogy Marco Solinas Political Philosophy, University of Florence and Deutsches Institut Florenz, Via dei Pecori 1, 50123 Florence, Italy; [email protected] Academic Editor: Philip Kretsedemas Received: 10 March 2017; Accepted: 16 May 2017; Published: 23 May 2017 Abstract: This paper outlines Darwin’s theory of descent with modification in order to show that it is genealogical in a narrow sense, and that from this point of view, it can be understood as one of the basic models and sources—also indirectly via Nietzsche—of Foucault’s conception of genealogy. Therefore, this essay aims to overcome the impression of a strong opposition to Darwin that arises from Foucault’s critique of the “evolutionistic” research of “origin”—understood as Ursprung and not as Entstehung. By highlighting Darwin’s interpretation of the principles of extinction, divergence of character, and of the many complex contingencies and slight modifications in the becoming of species, this essay shows how his genealogical framework demonstrates an affinity, even if only partially, with Foucault’s genealogy. On July 23, 2008, the Office received the Service's Section 20 Board of Investigation Regarding Allegations of Inappropriate Injections Administered at Joliette Institution between June 27 and July 26, 2007. Our Preliminary Review of the Section 20 Board of Investigation (dated August 19, 2008 and shared with the Service on December 5, 2008) noted several discrepancies between the Bot findings and the use of force reviews conducted at the Institutional, Regional and National (Women Offender and Health Care Sector) levels. The findings of the Bol were also inconsistent with our detailed review of the video evidence. Confronted with an irreconcilable interpretation of the events under scrutiny, my Office commissioned Paul Beaudry, MD, FRCPC to conduct an independent expert review of the treatment received by Ms. Smith, specifically the forced medical injections administered on July 22, 23 and 26, 2007 at Joliette.

Szasz New Brunswick, NJ: Transaction, 2007. 278 pp. ISBN 978-0- 7658-0379-5. $34.95 Reviewed by Jay Joseph In Coercion as Cure: A Critical History of Psychiatry, psychiatrist Thomas S. Szasz returns to many of the positions he has put forward since the 1960s. A major theme of his writing has been that psychiatry is a “pseudoscientific state religion” (p. 10), whose main purpose is to deprive people of their liberty under the guise of providing treatment for those suffering from (nonexistent) “mental illnesses.” As always, Szasz uses direct and forceful language in making his case against “psychiatric slavery” (p. 12). He defines psychiatry as “the theory and practice of coercion, rationalized as the diagnosis of mental illness and justified as medical treatment aimed at protecting the patient from himself and society from the patient” (p. xi). The book's subtitle should not lead prospective readers to conclude that this is a comprehensive critical history of the psychiatric profession. Rather, Szasz focuses on past and present controversial psychiatric “treatments” such as American psychiatry founder Benjamin Rush's “tranquilizing chair,” involuntary confinement, lobotomy (which Szasz calls “cerebral spaying,” p. 151), sleep therapy, electroconvulsive treatment (ECT), insulin shock treatment, and the “psychiatrically implemented drugging of mental patients” (p. 177). Unlike more moderate critics, who point to these practices as mere abuses, Szasz sees them as exemplifying the role of psychiatry as an agent of social control. “Despite seemingly radical changes in psychiatric principles and practices during the past half century,” he writes, “I contend that the truth about this mala fide medical specialty remains so terrible that it invites disbelief” (p.

More particularly, is there any philosophical value in investigating the contexts from which our philosophical outlooks originate? Analytic philosophy has historically responded antagonistically to the suggestion that looking to our past for answers is valuable. Yet some philosophers argue that the search for the origins of our philosophical outlook can be a source of great (meta-)philosophical insight. One such strand are the so-called genealogists. The purpose of this thesis is to understand what the promise of philosophical genealogy is, and whether it can be fulfilled. A challenge for my project is that the term ‘genealogy’ has been used to describe very different kinds of things (Section I). As such, I propose to develop a taxonomy of conceptions of genealogy (Section II), identify what the distinctive features of its members are (Section III), and what kind of insight they can give us (Section IV). In the final section (Section V), I return to the question of whether there is any non-trivial claim we can make about what features are shared by the disparate conceptions I identify. I argue that there is, but not at the level of a common philosophical method.

The social phenomenon explored in thispaper is a treatment for mental illness practiced in 19th century Britain called "moral therapy". One of the factors in the rise of moral therapy was that moral therapy asylums could point to mathematical "scientific" cure rates based on discharge and readmission rates to moral therapy asylums. These cure rates were far higher than the cure rates of other, merely custodial institutions of the time.However, failure to properly allow for the difference between acute and chronic mentalillness in the way that cure rates were calculated for these institutions led to a decline infunding for moral therapy asylums.This paper provides a cautionary vignette of how the (mis)use of statistics influenced animportant social policy in 19th century Britain.

Claiming quantitative genetics is “fatally flawed” and describing the results generated from these models as “preposterous,” Burt and Simons took the unprecedented step to call for abandoning heritability studies and their constituent findings. We show that their call for an “end to heritability studies” was premature, misleading, and entirely without merit. Specifically, we trace the history of behavioral genetics and show that 1) the Burt and Simons critique dates back 40 years and has been subject to a broad array of empirical investigations, 2) the violation of assumptions in twin models does not in- validate their results, and 3) Burt and Simons created a distorted and highly misleading portrait of behavioral genetics and those who use quantitative genetic approaches. “The flaws of twin studies are not fatal, but rather seem no worse (and may be better) than the flaws of the typical causal study that relies on observational data.” (Felson, 2012: ii) Behavioral genetic research has existed for more than 100 years (Maxson, 2007).

    humanities Article A Mind Trying to Right/Write Itself: Metaphors in Madness Narratives Renana Stanger Elran Independent Researcher, Modiin 7172420, Israel; [email protected] Received: 20 February 2019; Accepted: 19 June 2019; Published: 25 June 2019 Abstract: This article explores autobiographical madness narratives written by people with lived experience of psychosis, dated from the mid-19th century until the 1970s. The focus of the exploration is on the metaphors used in these narratives in order to communicate how the writers experienced and understood madness from within. Different metaphors of madness, such as going out of one’s mind, madness as an inner beast, another world, or a transformative journey are presented based on several autobiographical books. It is argued that these metaphors often represent madness as the negative picture of what it is to be human, while the narrative writing itself helps to restore a sense of belonging and personhood. The value and function of metaphors in illness and madness narratives is further discussed. Keywords: psychosis; madness; schizophrenia; narrative; autobiography; metaphor; history of 1. Introduction Madness challenges the mainstream way of being a person in the world; going out of one’s mind is also going out of the matrix of normative thoughts, emotions, and actions. A person going through a psychotic episode (psychosis being the archetypal representation of madness) is deeply convinced by the subjective experience of reality, though it seems unlikely or even bizarre and differs from what is understood by others to be real. When psychotic experiences are looked upon in retrospect, the story of the self in times of madness can seem to the person themselves as deeply intimate but also as strange and alien, both profound and meaningless at the same time.
