Chasing Sea Witch The clipper ship had its heyday in the mid-nineteenth century when it was profitable to move high-value cargo at a high rate of speed. The name really meant "speed" ship, as in moving "at a good clip." It is well known to sailors that the clippers were the fastest sailing ships of all time. So, why, asks Cynthia Parthemas, writing for Sites Alive, would our Rich duMoulin "want to leave comfortable Larchmont, for a 70-day trip from Hong Kong to New York, to break the speed record of Sea Witch, in a 53-foot two-man boat?" The first answer is that he is a product of Dartmouth, and this is what Dartmouth people do. But, the second answer lies with his passion for sailing, for adventure at sea, and for the opportunity to bring school kids across the country "along for the ride." But, it goes deeper than that - to the explorers who have always fascinated Rich duMoulin, including Columbus, Shackleton, and the astronauts. I, too, have had a similar fascination - and share his special admiration for Ernest Shackleton and the circumstances of his extraordinary and ill-fated 1914-17 Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition - and, against all odds, the elements of improbable success of his voyage. His purported recruitment advertisement said it all: "Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success." Historically accurate or not, his recruitment was over-subscribed. Despite having the Endurance crushed by ice, floating on ice floes, camping on Elephant Island in winter, sailing 800 miles for 16 days across the open sea in an un-seaworthy life boat, and then climbing across the forbidding peaks of South Georgia, Shackleton was able to return and bring all of his men home to safety. -

While preparing for the Fleet Week Sail, the crew of HMS Darrall www.bayshots.com Slater, Surprise was interrupted on the afternoon of April 20th by an out of control rental sloop. Darrall Slater of Bayshots was on Courtesy of hand as apparently the sloop had "obvious issues with the jib.“ Members of the U.S. Coast Guard on scene as the sloop remains tied to Pilot. At some point, the engine stalled sending the sloop on a direct course towards the B-39 submarine. Glancing off of the sub, the sloop pinwheeled around into Surprise’s stern. While the former provide pattern, the latter give texture. Objects that directly link people to historical events allow us to touch the past. Some are very personal connections between indi- viduals and their ancestors. Others are the touch- stones of our collective memory. Buried in the sand of Lake Superior is the USS ESSEX, an artifact of the nation’s maritime past. A mid- nineteenth-century sloop of war designed by one of America’s foremost naval architects, Donald McKay, the ESSEX traveled around the world and ultimately came to rest on Duluth’s Minnesota Point, about as far from the ocean as a vessel can get. The timbers of the SCOTT F. ANFINSON Scott Anfinson is the archaeologist for the Minnesota Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office. He received a Master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Nebraska in 1977 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Minnesota in 1987. Besides directing the Minnesota Shipwreck Initiative, his research interests focus on the American Indian archaeology of southwestern Minnesota and the history of the Minneapolis riverfront. From the reports we have gathered for this event, the lowest geomagnetic latitude of deÿnite overhead aurora (coronal form) was 40◦ and the lowest geomagnetic latitude from which auroras were observed on the poleward horizon in the northern hemisphere was 30◦. -

A Medley of Cultures: Louisiana History at the Cabildo Chapter 1 Introduction This book is the result of research conducted for an exhibition on Louisiana history prepared by the Louisiana State Museum and presented within the walls of the historic Spanish Cabildo, constructed in the 1790s. All the words written for the exhibition script would not fit on those walls, however, so these pages augment that text. The exhibition presents a chronological and thematic view of Louisiana history from early contact between American Indians and Europeans through the era of Reconstruction. One of the main themes is the long history of ethnic and racial diversity that shaped Louisiana. Thus, the exhibition—and this book—are heavily social and economic, rather than political, in their subject matter. They incorporate the findings of the "new" social history to examine the everyday lives of "common folk" rather than concentrate solely upon the historical markers of "great white men." In this work I chose a topical, rather than a chronological, approach to Louisiana's history. Each chapter focuses on a particular subject such as recreation and leisure, disease and death, ethnicity and race, or education. In addition, individual chapters look at three major events in Louisiana history: the Battle of New Orleans, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Organization by topic allows the reader to peruse the entire work or look in depth only at subjects of special interest. For readers interested in learning even more about a particular topic, a list of additional readings follows each chapter. Before we journey into the social and economic past of Louisiana, let us look briefly at the state's political history. -

1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -
