Hillsboro United Methodist Church

Located in Historic Hillsboro/Leiper’s Fork—Over 100 years of Worship and Service Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world

5313 Old State Hwy 96 Franklin, TN 37064 (615) 595-0155 September 2019 A Note from Pastor Betty

Dear Hillsboro UMC,

With any luck, we’ll end this month sipping pumpkin lattes. Reality check - luck may not hold, but we’ll be thinking of seasonal changes anyway. Our worship series this month focuses on seasons of change - the changes that you and I go through in our spiritual lives as the people of God: seasons of waywardness, repentance, forgiveness and redemption. Through all of our sea- sons God invites us to rest in a place of joy and peace, knowing the one who made us is making us still. We continue to meet as a Spiritual Leadership team to pray through and strategize ways we can move into an empowered team leadership model at Hillsboro. Our meetings are shaped by lov- ing, learning, and leading. We spend time in worship and sharing what we see God doing. We learn leadership truths of how to serve well and implement helpful change. We lead through con- tinuing our conversation and establishing new avenues to incorporate you into where God is leading our church. It is our belief that we are called to be a beacon of hope in the Leiper’s Fork parish. We will find new ministries and outreach beginning as well as greater support given to the ministries already moving in the life of our congregation. Please let me know if you are ready to be involved. Church only works when we are all engaged.

I continue to hold each of you in prayer and am grateful for those who are committed to pray over all of our church leadership and our ministries together. It is an honor to serve with you.

Sincerely, Pastor Betty Live Auction and Silent Auction Items for Fall Festival

All silent and live auction items should be brought to the church by Sunday, September 1. This will allow the items to be sepa- rated into silent and live auction items. The “Live auction” items will be listed and emailed to everyone on the church email list on Friday, September 6, so you can get your bids ready!

If your item can’t be brought to the church until Saturday (e.g. food items), please complete an “Auction Card” and put it in the basket on the piano by September 1; then it can be added into the mix!

Please only bring items that you think are desirable to others! Think about donating your tal- ents—such as tax preparation, cooking classes, serving a meal, yard cleanup, etc. Everyone al- ways appreciates these.

We will also have a “Country Store” where items are priced for sale. There will be things like baked goods, jams, pickles, and more. We will have a “Children’s Table” where everything is 25 cents up to $1—items like small toys, jewelry, books, etc. You may bring items to sell in either of these areas. Look for labeled locations in the fellowship hall to place your donations.

I hear mention of new children’s activities; so invite all your friends with children. This is truly a wonderful community event! Remember you can “pre-buy” tickets to give to friends. The “special” is 12 tickets for $100, at a savings or $2 per ticket. Get yours soon from Gladys Johnson.

There is something for everyone at the 28th Hillsboro United Methodist’s Fall Festival!

Never Enough

Someone asked John D. Rockefeller, the richest man of his time, how much money is enough? He replied, “Just a little bit more.”

Lots of people have that problem. We think if could just make a little more, we would be set. But when we get that little more, it isn’t too long till we are saying the same thing, just with an in- creased amount.

The Preacher tells us this truth in Ecclesiastes 5:10-11: “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity. When good things increase, those who consume them increase. So what is the advantage to their owners except to look on?”

Satisfaction doesn’t come in getting what you want; it comes in wanting what you already have.

September Youth News

What a summer it has been! There were so many fun events and trips this summer, and the old saying is true that time flies when you're having fun because now kids are already back in school and we're thinking about fall!

And there's much to look forward to about what's coming up next. I'm excited to try out a new structure for our youth programming. Thanks to growing numbers, we've decided to split up our youth into 3 groups.

1) On Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., PreK - 5th graders are invited to church for Junior Youth Group for snacks, games and Bi- ble teaching. 2) On Sunday evenings from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., 5th - 8th graders will have their own time of discipleship. This is our new group we're calling Middle Youth Group. 3) 9th - 12th graders are invited to Senior Youth Group on Sunday evenings from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

You'll notice two things about that list: (1) The times for the Middle and Senior groups overlap. That is intentional. On Sundays we will have a meal that starts at 5:30pm. This means that the Middle Youth will end their time with the meal, and Senior Youth will begin their time with the meal. This way both groups get to eat and fellowship to- gether which we believe will strengthen us as a com- munity. (2) You'll notice that grade 5 is included in both Junior Youth and Middle Youth groups. We would like to be flexible and let those in 5th grade decide if they would like to be a part of the younger group or the older group OR both!

There are also some special events coming up that you want to make sure you have on your calendar! On Saturday, September 7, we have our annual Fall Festi- val which is always a blast. Unfortunately I will miss it this year as I will be in California for the wedding of some very close friends of mine. I am sad to miss the festival, but I'm honored to be a part of a special day for my friends. I'm also excited to get to do some surfing while I'm there; pray that no sharks get me!

And on Sunday, September 29 we will be having a youth and family get together with our friends from Empowerment Church. More details to come, so stay tuned!

Thanks everyone for being a part of our church; a body of believers seeking God together is a powerful thing. The more we draw near to Him, the more He draws near to us, and the more we'll see His hand at work in our lives and community. God is good!

Why Should I Give to the Church and to Others?

Most of us enjoy getting gifts. However, as we grow older and wiser, we learn that we receive far more joy when we give gifts than when we receive them. The value of giving has been acknowledged throughout ages and cultures.

• It is better to give than to receive. (Jesus in Acts 20:35) • Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (The apostle Paul in 2 Corin- thians 9:7) • To find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others. (Mahatma Gandhi) • If you always give, you will always have. (A Chinese proverb) • He who obtains has little. He who scatters has much. (Lao-Tzu) • The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving. (Albert Einstein)

At HUMC, we have many opportunities to give. We can tithe or give offerings to help our church continue operating and serving our community and beyond. We can also serve, help with activities, participate in service projects and studies, teach a class, serve on committees, and so much more. There are so many ways to serve others through HUMC.

Giving (money, time, gifts, service) provides us with the opportunity to get beyond our- selves and see others—to see the bigger picture. Then our own challenges often seem insignificant, and we can find true joy, self-esteem, and value. 7
