Highly praised as one of the more original productions in the increasingly overcrowded animation sphere, and featuring some top voiceover talent including Elijah Wood and Christopher Plummer, it nevertheless bows to the demands of conventional action flicks and the CGI magic- makers, somewhat diminishing its indie street cred. The Lovely Bones This week’s other major release is Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, in which the Lord of the Rings director melds supernatural fantasy, murder mystery and family drama into a far from seamless tale taken from Alice Sebold’s best-selling 2002 novel of the same name. The presence of Saoirse Ronan, who was Character so brilliant in Atonement (2007), is submerged beneath a blanket of special effects that attempts to create a cinematic image of heaven — always a dangerous thing to do.     CCEERRSS Centre for Ethnicity & Racism Studies The anthropology of dark tourism Exploring the contradictions of capitalism Dr Maximiliano Korstanje February 2015 Introduction Dark tourism is a phenomenon widely studied over the last decades. More substantial research has been advanced as fieldwork in dark tourism sites (Seaton, 1996; Stone, 2012; Shapley, 2005; Korstanje & Ivanov, 2012; Korstanje, 2011b). However, such studies focused on methodologies that use tourists as the analysis’ starting point. Sometimes, interviewees do not respond with honesty, or simply are not familiar with the basis of their own behaviour. In Latin America people in some regions with histories of mass-death are reluctant to accept tourism as their main profitable resource. Some destinations exploit death as the site’s primary attraction, whereas other ones develop a negative attitude towards tourists. A more helpful way to advance this discussion, as relevant literature suggests, is that dark tourism is defined by the presence of “thanaptosis”: the possibility to understand one’s own (future) end through the death of others. This allows us to think of dark tourism as a subtype of heritage, even connect it to pilgrimage (Poria, 2007; Seaton, 1996; Cohen 2011). Yet, even these studies ignore the real roots of the debate on “thanatopsis” and its significance for configuring the geography of dark sites. 1 The concept of “thanatopsis”, which was misunderstood by some tourism scholars, such as Seaton or Sharpley, was originally coined by the American poet William Cullen Bryant (1817) to refer to the anticipation of one’s own death through the eyes of others. Those who have read Bryant’s poem will agree that the death of other people make us feel better because we avoided temporarily our own end.

    The Development of the British Conspiracy Thriller 1980-1990 Paul S. Lynch This thesis is submitted to the University of Hertfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. January 2017 Abstract This thesis adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to explore the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in British cinema during the 1980s. There is considerable academic interest in the Hollywood conspiracy cycle that emerged in America during the 1970s. Films such as The Parallax View (Pakula, 1975) and All the President’s Men (Pakula, 1976) are indicative of the genre, and sought to reflect public anxieties about perceived government misdeeds and misconduct within the security services. In Europe during the same period, directors Costa-Gavras and Francesco Rosi were exploring similar themes of state corruption and conspiracy in films such as State of Siege (1972) and Illustrious Corpses (1976). This thesis provides a comprehensive account of how a similar conspiracy cycle emerged in Britain in the following decade. We will examine the ways in which British film-makers used the conspiracy form to reflect public concerns about issues of defence and national security, and questioned the measures adopted by the British government and the intelligence community to combat Soviet subversion during the last decade of the Cold War. Unlike other research exploring espionage in British film and television, this research is concerned exclusively with the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in mainstream cinema. This has been achieved using three case studies: Defence of the Realm (Drury, 1986), The Whistle Blower (Langton, 1987) and The Fourth Protocol (MacKenzie, 1987).

Stone SUMMARY Deaths, disasters and atrocities in touristic form are becoming an increasingly pervasive feature within the contemporary tourism landscape, and as such, are ever more providing potential spiritual journeys for the tourist who wishes to gaze upon real and recreated death. As a result, the rather emotive label of 'dark tourism' has entered academic discourse and media parlance, and consequently has generated a significant amount of research interest. However, despite this increasing attention the dark tourism literature remains both eclectic and theoretically fragile. That is, a number of fundamental issues remain, not least whether it is actually possible or justifiable to collectively categorise a diverse range of sites, attractions and exhibitions that are associated with death and the macabre as 'dark tourism', or whether identifiable degrees or 'shades' of darkness can be attributed to a particular type of dark tourism supplier. This paper argues that certain suppliers may indeed, conceptually at least, share particular product features, perceptions and characteristics, which can then be loosely translated into various 'shades of darkness'. As a result, dark tourism products may lie along a rather 'fluid and dynamic spectrum of intensity', whereby particular sites may be conceivably 'darker' than others, dependant upon various defining characteristics, perceptions and product traits. It is proposed that construction of a firm and comprehensive typological foundation will lead not only to a better understanding of dark tourism supply, but also, and perhaps more importantly, lead to a better understanding of where to locate and explore consumer demand, motivations and experiences.
