  • Oliver Stone's Nixon: Politics on the Edge of Darkness IAN SCOTT
Oliver Stone's Nixon: Politics on the Edge of Darkness IAN SCOTT In the introduction to his controversial book, The Ends of Power , former White House Chief of Staff, H.R. Haldeman describes Watergate as being an expression «of the dark side of President Nixon» 1. Later in the book Haldeman cites former Special Counsel Charles Colson as a key man who «encouraged the dark impulses in Nixon's mind» 2. Stephen Ambrose has written that Nixon «never abandoned his black impulses to lash out at the world...», while Henry Kissinger offered the view that «the thoughtful analytical side of Nixon was most in evidence during crises, while periods of calm seemed to unleash the darker passions of his nature» 3. Christopher Wilkinson -talking directly about Oliver Stone's film-has focused on the movie's analogy of a «beast» that «also became a metaphor for the dark side of Nixon himself» 4. Wherever you look in the vast array of literature on the life and times of President Richard Nixon, as sure as you are to hear the description «Shakespearean tragedy», so the notions of dark and brooding forces are never far away, following in the shadows of the man. As many have pointed out, however, Nixon's unknown blacker side was not merely a temperamental reaction, not only a protective camouflage to deflect from the poor boy made good syndrome that he was proud about and talked a great deal of, but always remained an Achilles heel in his own mind; no the concealment of emotional energy was tied up in the fascination with life and beyond.

  • Conclusion: What Might a War Film Look Like Going Forward?
CONCLUSION: WHAT MIGHT A WAR FILM LOOK LIKE GOING FORWARD? This text began from a broad perspective that was very much in line with Kellner’s understanding of the power of cinema: Films can also provide allegorical representations that interpret, comment on, and indirectly portray aspects of an era. Further there is an aesthetic, philosophical, and anticipatory dimension to flm, in which they provide artistic visions of the world that might transcend the social context of the moment and articulate future possibilities, positive and negative, and pro- vide insight into the nature of human beings, social relationships, institu- tions, and conficts of a given era. (14) From this point of view, this book considered the movies that it ana- lyzed within the technological and military “eras” they were made and frst viewed within, and considered the ways in which the war flm most often undermined the potential cooperative power of Internet-enabled machine species with a continued focus on the humanistic ethics laid out by Jeffords’ Reagan-era hard body. The “insight” the movies provided reifed the fears and concerns found in the moviemaking machinic phy- lum of Hollywood and its overlap with the American State War Machine, all the while deconstructing the documents as windows into “the nature of human beings, social relationships, institutions, and conficts” as it related to the civilian machinic audience of war flms. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2017 229 A. Tucker, Virtual Weaponry, DOI 10.1007/978-3-319-60198-4 230 CONCLUSION: What MIGHT A WAR FILM LOOK LIKE GOING FOrwarD? This book is being published with the knowledge that, like Interfacing with the Internet in Popular Cinema, it is far from compre- hensive and with the hope that other scholars might pick up some of the initial or underdeveloped thoughts that were begun with this text.

  • The Anthropology of Dark Tourism
CCEERRSS Centre for Ethnicity & Racism Studies The anthropology of dark tourism Exploring the contradictions of capitalism Dr Maximiliano Korstanje February 2015 Introduction Dark tourism is a phenomenon widely studied over the last decades. More substantial research has been advanced as fieldwork in dark tourism sites (Seaton, 1996; Stone, 2012; Shapley, 2005; Korstanje & Ivanov, 2012; Korstanje, 2011b). However, such studies focused on methodologies that use tourists as the analysis’ starting point. Sometimes, interviewees do not respond with honesty, or simply are not familiar with the basis of their own behaviour. In Latin America people in some regions with histories of mass-death are reluctant to accept tourism as their main profitable resource. Some destinations exploit death as the site’s primary attraction, whereas other ones develop a negative attitude towards tourists. A more helpful way to advance this discussion, as relevant literature suggests, is that dark tourism is defined by the presence of “thanaptosis”: the possibility to understand one’s own (future) end through the death of others. This allows us to think of dark tourism as a subtype of heritage, even connect it to pilgrimage (Poria, 2007; Seaton, 1996; Cohen 2011). Yet, even these studies ignore the real roots of the debate on “thanatopsis” and its significance for configuring the geography of dark sites. 1 The concept of “thanatopsis”, which was misunderstood by some tourism scholars, such as Seaton or Sharpley, was originally coined by the American poet William Cullen Bryant (1817) to refer to the anticipation of one’s own death through the eyes of others. Those who have read Bryant’s poem will agree that the death of other people make us feel better because we avoided temporarily our own end.
