The aim of this manual consists of the following: acquaintance with a vocabulary on a historical subject; broadening students’ general outlook; development of reading, translation and understanding skills of texts devoted to the various periods of the world history; improvement of the spoken language skills in situations which are closely connected with their future professional activity; forming creative thought and skills for the decision of problem situations. Part I is organized into four Modules: the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, the Modern History and the New History. Each Module contains three or four units which have the similar structure: Pre-reading, Reading, Language Development, Speaker’s Corner, Writing and Project. Reading activities include a wide range of historical texts, which are intended for reading in a class and for independent work of students. Different complication of texts allows using them for reading with understanding, translation, discussion and annotating. The authentic texts of the manual conform to cognitive and professional interests of students. Each unit of the manual contains a variety of exercises that present and practice new language and develop speaking, reading and writing skills. The lexical items are introduced through techniques which include multiple choice, matching, gap-filling, true-false, word-formation, etc. The first two techniques measure students’ passive vocabulary and should provide practice in recognition. The latter lend themselves better to checking and broadening their knowledge of active vocabulary and should provide practice in production. There are exercises based on problem- solving, grouping words, pictures, sentence-building, opposites, synonyms, errors, etc. They test students’ knowledge of how an item is used, where it is used, what its limitations are, how it behaves in certain situations, what other words are likely to occur with it. Various Language Development exercises will help to master the historical vocabulary, prepare students for speaking on professional topics and increase their motivation to become actively involved in learning about history. Speaker’s Corner is connected with the improving of English speaking skills. It will help students to communicate more easily and effectively using the information from the internet or historical books/encyclopedias. Writing deals with compositions focuses on specific topics. Students have to produce their own compositions using 150-200 words. Some units have Project activity which deals with a short presentation, continuing the story, reading and discussion, etc. This kind of work requires knowledge of Project PowerPoint Presentation. Part II is organized into six Sections. Section I - Additional texts for individual reading and translation focuses on authentic texts which logically supplement the units. Section II – Grammar guide consists of the theoretical section with explanations and examples, grammar exercises and a test. Explanations and examples are written for the student to use individually but they may be used by the teacher as a source of ideas and information on which to base a lesson. The exercises can be used for in-class reference or at-home study. Section III – Modules reinforces students’ knowledge of the vocabulary and topics. Most of the new vocabulary is presented in Section IV - Wordlist which is designed in the alphabetic order. The words and phrases are not translated into the students’ mother tongue, so they can check the meaning of new words in their dictionaries. Each new word or phrase is printed in boldface type in the unit when it appears for the first time in the text. Section V – Answers will help students to find answers for the most difficult exercises. The answers also contain additional information on different topics. Section VI - Recommended literature covers the authentic books, sites from the internet. This section is useful for those students who want to broaden their knowledge in history. 6 PART I MODULE I.     THE WORKS OF ART IN THE AGE OF DIGITAL REPRODUCTION THE THEORETICAL BACKGROUND The Impossible Exhibitions project derives from an instance of cultural democracy that has its precursors in Paul Valéry, Walter Benjamin and André Malraux. The project is also born of the awareness that in the age of the digital reproducibility of the work of art, the concepts of safeguarding and (cultural and economic) evaluation of the artistic patrimony inevitably enter not only the work as itself, but also its reproduction: “For a hundred years here, as soon as the history of art has escaped specialists, it has been the history of what can be photographed” (André Malraux). When one artist's work is spread over various museums, churches and private collections in different continents, it becomes almost impossible to mount monograph exhibitions that give a significant overall vision of the great past artist's work. It is even harder to create great exhibitions due to the museum directors’ growing – and understandable – unwillingness to loan the works, as well as the exorbitant costs of insurance and special security measures, which are inevitable for works of incalculable value.     This is an introduction to Stephen Halliday's book The Great Stink of London. During Victorian times, there were serious problems with water supply and sanitation in London. Crisis point was reached in the summer of 1858. The Great Stink of London In the mid-19th century, Britain was gripped by the fear of cholera, a highly infectious and deadly disease. When cholera struck Hamburg in Germany, the British government grew alarmed that this latest outbreak might spread to Britain. They decided to create a special committee to deal with the expected epidemic. However, the epidemic never happened because of the work of one man: Sir Joseph Bazalgette. At that time, London’s sewage flowed straight into the River Thames. From here it leaked into adjacent springs, wells and other sources of drinking water. This was the root cause of cholera, a waterborne disease. Contemporary accounts describe London being crowded with men, women and children struggling to survive in terrible conditions. In 1849, one journalist reported that the air had 'the smell of a graveyard, and a feeling of nausea comes over anyone unaccustomed to it.' About the Thames, he wrote, 'heavy bubbles now and then rise up in the water, which is covered with a scum like an encrusted cobweb. In it float large masses of noxious, tangled weed and against the posts of the bridges are swollen carcasses of dead animals.' In the summer of 1858, the stench from the Thames was so bad that Members of Parliament fled from the rooms overlooking the river.     ON THE CONCEPTS OF ‘SOVEREIGN’ AND ‘GREAT’ ORDERS Antti Matikkala The only contemporary order of knighthood to include the word ‘sovereign’ in its name is the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta. Sovereignty is here heraldically exemplified by the Grand Master’s use of the closed crown. Its Constitutional Charter and Code explains that the order ‘be- came sovereign on the islands of Rhodes and later of Malta’, and makes the follow- ing statement about its sovereignty: ‘The Order is a subject of international law and exercises sovereign functions.’1 However, the topic of this article is not what current scholarship designates as military-religious orders of knighthood, or simply military orders, but monarchical orders. To quote John Anstis, Garter King of Arms,2 a monarchical order can be defined in the following terms: a Brotherhood, Fellowship, or Association of a certain Number of actual Knights; sub- jected under a Sovereign, or Great Master, united by particular Laws and Statutes, peculiar to that Society, not only distinguished by particular Habits, Ensigns, Badges or Symbols, which usually give Denomination to that Order; but having a Power, as Vacancies happen in their College, successively, of nominating, or electing proper Per- sons to succeed, with Authority to assemble, and hold Chapters. The very concept of sovereignty is ambiguous. A recent collection of essays has sought to ‘dispel the illusion that there is a single agreed-upon concept of sovereignty for which one could offer of a clear definition’.3 To complicate the issue further, historical and theoretical discussions on sovereignty, including those relating to the Order of Malta, concentrate mostly on its relation to the modern concept of state, leaving the supposed sovereignty of some of the monarchical orders of knighthood an unexplored territory.

His books include The RAF and Trade Defence 1919-1945 (1995), Air Power in the Age of Total War (1999) and Monty’s Men: The British Army 1944-5 (2013). His history of the RAF (co-authored with Paul Beaver) will be published by Oxford University Press in 2018. Abstract: From 1939 to 1945 RAF Coastal Command played a crucial role in maintaining Britain’s maritime communications, thus securing the United Kingdom’s ability to wage war against the Axis powers in Europe. Its primary role was in confronting the German U-boat menace, particularly in the 1940-41 period when Britain came closest to losing the Battle of the Atlantic and with it the war. The importance of air power in the war against the U-boat was amply demonstrated when the closing of the Mid-Atlantic Air Gap in 1943 by Coastal Command aircraft effectively brought victory in the Atlantic campaign. Coastal Command also played a vital role in combating the German surface navy and, in the later stages of the war, in attacking Germany’s maritime links with Scandinavia.
