Bearing in mind the virus social distancing restrictions, your committee have still been in regular communication and recently have agreed to implement a new temporary procedure for membership applications. This will allow prospective new members to make an application for membership electronically or via post. For many years It has been the practice for a new member to attend one of the club meetings. As there are no immediate club meetings planned, application forms will be made available from the club’s membership officer/secretary and these may be either e-mailed or posted to the applicant. Monies can be sent by cheque, postal order or by electronic funds transfer. Once an application is received and paid for, the membership officer will email the committee for approval. If no negative responses are received within 48 hours then the new member is accepted and a membership card issued. The new member can then make arrangements with one of the machine examiners to have their bike inspected for registration. (FYI. The 6 step temporary membership plan is available in more detail, on the club’s website along with an updated ‘Historic Vehicle Scheme’ registration flow chart.) It is expected the new member attend and introduce themself at a club meeting, once the government restrictions are eased, allowing the resumption of club meetings. Bearing in mind Lester Hamilton’s letter in last month’s Clatter, regarding the Debenham night (from 1998). I remember, after the presentation, asking Eric to sign a copy of my presentation folder, which he did with pleasure and then gave out a traditional, Debenham, boisterous laugh. If you are interested in receiving an electronic copy of the presentation (14 pages), Just send me a request with your email address and I’ll forward you a copy. It’s good to see an easing of the rules allowing short motorcycle rides, for reasons of exercise and recently, allowing an increase in travel within NSW. Please remember that social distancing rules are still in place, so gatherings and meetings must be restricted. Better days are coming soon……….David. I can attest to the fact that that is a good thing, as I have had over 36 years of listening to campfire tales from rallies far and wide. Thanks Mark, Ray and Wayne for your contributions, and to the ‘South Riders’ for their photos. Life is slowly returning to whatever our new ‘normal’ will be – Central West branch is able to recommence club meetings and runs, Sydney will have to wait for their meeting room to be available (currently used for table/chair storage), and the Illawarra Branch may have to wait a while for meetings to restart at the traditional location (Keiraville Public School hall). As it continues to be an evolving situation keep an eye on the Facebook page and CEMCC website for latest developments. The Clatter will attempt to keep you as up to date as possible, but may lag behind the more “real time” media. Bruce’s Bit Sad news for this edition with the passing of two members, Gordon Harman and Lee Jones. Lester Hamilton has shared some thoughts on their passing in this edition. I recently received a call from member Chris Skinner who, together with some mates, toured on Royal Enfield Bullets from Kathmandu to Lhasa and return, visiting many villages and towns along the way - including Mt Everest base camp. Chris has written a book on the adventure and was kind enough to send an evaluation copy for me to read - the book is well set out with extensive photographs to bring the story to life, and highlights some challenging aspects of such a trip including dealing with border crossings, altitude sickness and mud – lots of mud. The book would be a good primer for anyone contemplating such a trip, and is likewise a great read for the armchair international traveller such as myself. Copies are available from Chris at a cost of $49.95 with the added bonus of $14.95 going to our club for each copy purchased by a member – see the For Sale section for details.     South of England Classic Motorcycle Show: Sunday 23rd October 2016 Page 1 of 25 South of England Classic Motorcycle Show: Draft Programme: Sunday 23rd October 2016 ________________________________________________________________________________________Year Make Model Club cc 1913 Zenith Gradua 90 Bore 996 Classes Entered:Pre 1950 VMCC (Surrey & Sussex) Bike Details: Built at Weybridge, Surrey, to the special order of Hal Hill, it lived on Monument Hill, Weybridge until 1953 when it was obtained by the present owner. Used by Hal Hill at Brooklands and many long-distance rallies before & after the First World War and last used by him in 1925. Fitted with the Gradua Gear, designed by Freddie Barnes in 1908 and fitted by Zenith until 1925. Zenith were barred from competing in the same classes as machines without variable gears, hence from 1910 the Zenith Trade Mark included the word BARRED. Capable of about 70 mph on the track, it's fitted with the JAP sidevalve engine, with 90mm bore x 77.5 stroke. It also has the large belt pulleys giving a variation from 3 to 1 in top gear, down to 6 to 1 in low gear.     5. Men of Substance – 1 When we are young and in the prime of our youth our lives pass so fast that events come and go quickly like today’s daily News. No sooner one event passes, another leaps up to replace it. Only the more dramatic or the humorous for the most part will stick with us. I recently discovered and read an old magazine article written in March 1992 to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic loss of Mike Hailwood. It triggered in me an old memory that I thought I had completely forgotten with the passage of time. Back around 1964/5 I was a member of a UK motorcycle club called The Southend & District MCC. Although I never met them, Bill Ivy and Dave Bickers were also registered members of the same club in compliance with an official UK ACU racing license ruling at that time. The ACU (Auto Cycle Union) was similar to the US. AMA (American Motorcycle Association) in governing all forms of motorcycle sport. We were treated to many a fascinating Club Talk by some quite prominent people of the day such as Charles Mortimer Sr. and Wal Phillips, (a veteran cinder-track speedway rider who was one of the first to develop aftermarket fuel injectors for motorcycles in the UK.), to name but a couple. An Avon Tire representative once came and gave a full presentation on the then newly developing technology of 'Avon Cling' High Hysteresis Tire Compounds. Bert Greeves, founder and owner of Greeves Motorcycles, was also a highly prominent figure along with his long-time friend and business associate, Derry Preston-Cobb, who ran the Greeves subsidiary of Invacar, an independent invalid vehicle factory located next door to the main Greeves factory on One Tree Hill, in Thundersley, Essex.

    2010 Event Report The best ‘Mallory’ yet! The stars, the participants and the weather all combined to give the record crowds a weekend to remember. The VMCC Festival of 1000 Bikes is now an accepted and an essential fixture on the motorcyclist’s calendar. We now talk of “Mallory” or “1000 Bikes” and every motorcyclist knows what you mean. This opportunity for the owners of both road and track machines to experience riding on a genuine race circuit at their own pace and in the company of like-minded enthusiasts is so attractive that the event was over-subscribed yet again. But it’s more than that. It is now one of those occasions where you are likely to meet everyone you ever knew in your world of motorcycling. Where you see the famous in informal and accessible situations and where you make new acquaintances, see unique and/or rare machines, where you learn more about motorcycle history and technology and where you are able to savour the sights, the sounds and the aromas of machines of a bygone age. Whilst the key attractions are out on the track, the exponents of Vintage Grass-track and the more relaxed devotees of the “Pre-1965 Trials” put on demonstrations of their activities in the out- field areas and the VMCC Sprint section staged dramatic demonstrations of their skills to a vast and appreciative crowd on the track at Sunday Lunch time. Sunday afternoon saw the ‘Past Masters’ led by Freddie Spencer on his Honda RS500 and Carl Fogarty MBE on his Ducati 996 showing us the skills, the style and the panache that made them so successful.
