JOURNAL Contributions for the next Journal should be to the Editor by the end of this month.

“So! The trunnion mountings are withdrawn before the spigot seats are exposed!” From The Automobile, March 1990 Page 2 January 2021 President’s Report Hi to all and families, I do hope Christmas was a memorable one and I wish you all a great new year for 2021. I am sure if members check out the COVID-19 regulations at https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/ and the COVID-safe summer restrictions at https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-covidsafe-summer you will agree we are as a club still very much restricted particularly for indoor meetings until maybe March 2021 – of course the goal posts may change!! John Truman’s great work for outdoor rallies can comply with current restrictions providing we all do the right thing and of course you may organise your own outings in small groups and comply with current Covid-Safe Summer Restrictions. It certainly has been a year to remember 2020 and I was optimistic for our AGM early in 2021, but I am not sure!! We will be conducting a Committee Meeting hopefully each month to keep our club moving along, albeit slowly. Brendan our hard-working Journal Editor will keep members informed of any changes via the Journal and/or email. We look forward to catching up with you all at Nathalia on the 17th January afternoon 2021. Until then keep well and have a great New Year for 2021. Regards Neil Rutherford PS At the time of writing this report a Covid change has been implemented so as I indicated, the goal posts certainly can change quickly. From the Editor If you’ve received this Journal in the mail, you’re financial for 2021 and your membership card will be included. If any member complains to you that they didn’t received theirs, they probably haven’t paid their subs! Condolences to Bill and Joy Winters and family on the passing of Bill’s mother late last month. Our thoughts are with you. Isn’t it great to see an events calendar with a reasonable number of car shows and rallies listed? Clubs seem to be carefully working their way back to normal, which is something to look forward to. Should I do an annual events calendar for 2021 or is that too optimistic? Thanks to the members who have contributed to this Journal, especially David for his story on Greeves . Don’t forget to send in a story about what you’re working on. Regards, Brendan Walsh

If you’re not receiving a monthly email advising of a new Journal being available on our website, then you need to let me know! Just send a message to the Club’s email address (top of page 2) and I’ll add you to the list. Over 150 members now get this monthly message. Twilight in Nathalia – January 17th

Works are progressing well at the Motor Museum / MOVE. There is a short video on YouTube that gives an idea of what is coming up, including the Truck Museum, Loel Thomson’s costume collection, the Furphy Museum, the Farren cycle collection and many others. It’s going to be a fantastic place to visit. The video link is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ph3FoQuQKs&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR1wIfWypLu6_JJPKHlU2u 1Idq4CQ9xJnEzNrGUbSykMgoKyc46i_EHLtoQ

Clubrooms Update

The Club was contacted recently by Rail Projects Victoria to advise of intended developments near the clubrooms. As part of the Shepparton Line Upgrade, to provide the infrastructure required for VLocity trains to run to Shepparton, a stabling area is required for the trains. This area will be used for storage of up to two six-car VLocity trains, allowing the trains to run more often. The site selected is the previous Terrazzo works, opposite and just north of the clubrooms, backing onto the rail corridor. The map shows the site in relation to the clubrooms.

Page 7 January 2021 Pride and Joy David and Tina Morrison’s 1967 GREEVES 24MX5B Challenger motorcycle

This article is to provide you with insight into the little- known marque of Greeves Motorcycles and the history of this motorcycle, which won the John Hill Trophy for Best Motorcycle at the GVMVDC 2019 Concours.

I purchased this motorcycle in 2019. The motor and most of the frame had been restored by well- known Greeves enthusiast and scrambles rider Greg Leany. Greg is a motorcycle mechanic and restorer. When I purchased this motorcycle it only required a few finishing touches to complete the restoration. The bike is a 1967 Greeves Challenger 24MX5B. It followed on from the 24MX1 first released in 1964 which incorporated the first all Greeves engine. Prior to this highly modified Villiers engines were being utilised. The new engine produced a very healthy 27bhp. The Challenger series and variants put Greeves at the pinnacle of the motorcycle world for a few short years.

My Collection of Greeves Motorcycles I currently have eleven Greeves motorcycles. Six have been restored or are in good usable condition. Five are in the process of being restored or on the waiting list. My uncle, James Ottrey was a motorcycle enthusiast who participated in scrambles and grass track events during in the 1950s. When I was an impressionable youngster and some years after he had retired from racing, he purchased a 1959 Greeves Hawkstone. I loved it, he had nothing but trouble with it and only rode it a few times. Many years later he sold it to a friend and I lost track of the bike. This experience with Greeves obviously left a lasting impression. About ten years ago when I rekindled my interest in bikes, I purchased a number of on and off-road bikes before purchasing a Greeves. Recently I have been fine tuning my bike collection and have been concentrating solely on Greeves and BSA unit singles.

Summary I’m always on the lookout for unwanted Greeves motorcycles to add to my collection. I find Greeves motorcycles intriguing, in that they were developed in a time of massive development in technology and engineering advances. How Greeves and other small companies developed world-beating motorcycles was testament to great British engineering of the time. Greeves are still popular in the United States. They have a national weekend meet annually. Enthusiasts comes from all over for the weekend. They camp on a private property, ride their Greeves and talk everything Greeves. It’s on my bucket list. I hope you have enjoyed my story and I hope you will see many Greeves (or BSAs) at our concours most years. David Morrison

Battlesbridge 2018 While on holiday in the United Kingdom in 2018, Tina and I attended the Battlesbridge Motorcycle Show. There was a very good attendance of Greeves motorcycles. They even had a small grass circuit setup for enthusiasts to do a few laps. Following are a few photos from the day.

 Bike closest to camera is a Greeves 24MX1 followed by two Greeves Griffons.

 This is a 1967 Greeves TJS Anglian, a well-regarded and successful trials bike.

 Bike at centre is a 1962 Greeves 25DCX Sportsman. Held back by its looks, but now rare.

Page 9 January 2021

History of Greeves Motorcycles In their heyday Greeves were remarkably successful in competition, with wins in the European Championship, the , the European Trials Championship and the , and with Gold medals in the ISDT and ACU 250cc Road Race and Motocross Stars.

The other great Greeves success was in exports; at the peak of production the majority of output was sold abroad, primarily in the United States, at a time when the British balance of payments deficit needed all the help it could get. Greeves were so successful in the USA that they can reasonably be credited with awakening the off-road biking scene there, and with the invention, as early as the mid-sixties, of the trail bike with their road legal off-roader, the Ranger.

Bert Greeves began his involvement with motorcycles after developing the Invacar - an invalid carriage developed to cope with the post-war needs of casualties.

 1954 The first machines appeared, all using the Villiers 8E engine. The design of the frame and suspension made Greeves unique. The tubular frame had a cast-alloy beam and the suspension had rubber bushes in torsion with in-built dampers - the front being leading-link. These were tried out both in scrambles and on the road and there were four models in total. Of the two road machines, one had three speeds and the other had four. There was a scrambles model and one for trials. Later in the year these were joined by the roadster Fleetwing, powered by the 242cc British Anzani twin two-stroke engine.  1956 Models using conventional tubular frames appeared, along with a twin using the 322cc British Anzani. Simultaneously, the original system of rear suspension was replaced by conventional rear units and the 8E engine was replaced by the 9E.  1957 Hydraulic dampers went into the front forks and the twins began to change to the 249cc Villiers 2T twin engine.  1958 The designs of competition and road models were growing farther apart, and previous suspension problems had been fixed. The trials bike was called Scottish and the scrambler Hawkstone, in recognition of the locations where they had performed well.  1959 The 197cc machines were joined by 246cc versions for road or competition use with the A-series Villiers engine.  1960 Those models continued. A road twin was added, with a 324cc Villiers 3T engine. These would run on for the rest of the decade.

Page 10 January 2021

 1961 The scrambler had the option of a Greeves top half for its Villiers engine. By this time the Greeves trial model had become a firm favourite and sales were excellent. Over the preceding few years, the machines had performed well in the European series.  1963 A new era arrived for the company when it branched into road racing, following the success of a modified scrambler. Known as the Silverstone, it was a racer with a 246cc engine, that was built up to 1968 and performed well.  1966 Only trials and scrambler motorcycles were built, as all the road models were dropped. Villiers was in trouble, but Greeves was able to continue. Telescopic forks became an option.  1967-1971 Production continued but there was little success.  1972 Output became minimal.  1978 The company closed when Bert Greeves retired, and a fire brought financial ruin.  1999 The name was revived with an Anglian replica trials bike built in , close to the original home - aimed at enthusiasts of the marque - by producing a classic look using modern materials and techniques. This was the 24TJSB with a traditional Villiers bottom half and Challenger head and barrel for the 246cc engine. The frame had a cast-alloy front beam, twin rear shocks, MP telescopic forks and conical hubs.

Page 13 January 2021 Rally Report VSCC Two-Wheel Brake Rally, Melbourne – 13th December 2020 Twelve months on from the Chenard et Walcker’s last outing, thanks to the failed water seal and then COVID, we again ventured to Melbourne for the Vintage Sports Car Club of Victoria’s Two Wheel Brake Rally. The car did not make preparation easy though, with it refusing to start in the lead-up to the run which gave me two weeks of headaches. However, with the assistance of a friend from the Veteran Car Club (an ex-mechanic which helps!), we were able to locate two stuck inlet valves causing all the grief. With that sorted a few days out from the run, I then loaded it on the trailer and took it to a friend’s factory in Sunshine, just in case it did not proceed again. Luckily, the extensive service and preparation we completed trying to make it start in the weeks prior meant that the car ended up performing better than ever and did not miss a beat! The start, as always, was bright and early on Dallas Brooks Drive in the City (near the War Memorial) to beat the heat and the traffic. There were 38 entries, plus a couple of ‘modern’ visitors, with 23 being proper two-wheel brakers. This year’s route was challenging, we headed North East of the City through Brunswick, Coburg, Preston and Heidelberg West finding as many local back streets as they could which resulted in crossing in excess of 100 speed bumps and the most crossings of Darebin Creek in one day I’ve ever seen. The run finished for a late lunch picnic at Yarra Bend Park in Fairfield. A fantastic day was had, and it reiterates that a group of veteran and vintage cars travelling through the City early on a Summer’s morning is an experience like no other. Callum Walsh

Club member Daryl from Cobram loaned me a copy of the Motor Trade Directory of Australia from 1939. It lists every motor industry business throughout the country. Here are the garages for the local area. Thanks for the loan Daryl.
