that we are a brand new unit. We don’t officially stand up until sometime in September,” said Col. C. J. Read, commander of the 96th Sustainment Brigade. And, as a new unit, the 96th does not yet own much of the command and control technology used in the RTOC. It’s the same technology that they will use in Iraq and will need to know as thoroughly as possible before they deploy. Once in Iraq, the 96th will be responsible for the movement of hundreds of transport vehicles and thousands of tons of cargo destined to move throughout most of the country, so learning the logistical ropes beforehand is critical. “This is the best shot that we have to realistically train for our mission once we’re in theater,” Read said. “And, we’re able to use real life convoy and logistics scenarios that have occurred in theater right here in the simulation center.” “In fact, our training has gone so well that we would like to come back to Fort Carson next year,” Read added, stressing that the skills learned to conduct his unit’s mission are highly perishable if they are not reinforced with frequent training. The new RTOC resides within the Battle Command Training Branch campus just north of the Outdoor Recreation building and across the street from the Mountain Post Sports Complex.

Fort Carson Soldiers marched in unison shouting, “I’ve been to World War II, fighting for freedom” in a calling cadence. This was Graham’s first visit to Cripple Creek. He commented on the city’s ability to preserve historical buildings and keep the small town atmosphere quaint by concealing the casinos. Similarly, the first class Historic Inn Conference Center and Gallery, where Roberts stayed, is an 1890s school house restored to the Victorian period.
