GOOD BUSINESS. As one of Georgia’s largest corporate citizens, we believe that our deeds should be as good as our words. That’s why we don’t limit our involvement with the community to the newspapers we publish. Instead, we offer a helping hand to all kinds of people and causes in need of a good friend. Causes like higher education for minorities. Talented theater groups. Dedicated teachers. Art museums and special exhibits. Health agencies. Outstanding students. Needy children at Christmastime. And dozens of other worthy causes.

After all, being a good friend is good business. And we are in the business of being a good friend.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, a company of exciting young dancers, has electrified audiences and stunned critics into superlatives since its birth in New York City in 1958. On tours in America, , Africa and the Far East, Alvin Ailey has presented a unique form of dance — combining modern, jazz and classical — reflecting the American heritage, both black and white. The music is jazz, symphonic, blues, spirituals. The dancing by the multiracial company is ecstatic, dramatic and vital. The whole experience is total “dance theater.” Alvin Ailey and his remarkable company have left cities, world capitals and whole countries cheering their performances. In Hamburg,

"... a brilliant mixture oi inspired dance and raw theatricality." The Star, Washington, D.C.

"... for sheer theatrical punch no contemporary dance company can touch them." The Guardian, London

the people refused to go home — the company re ceived an unprecedented 61 curtain calls! London and Paris have invited them back again and again, each time extending the length of the runs. The Company has appeared consistently before packed houses throughout the world and has triumphed in U.S. State Department-sponsored tours including Russia — which marked the first American contemporary dance company to appear in the U.S.S.R. The Ailey Company annually performs eight weeks in New York City at the City Center 55th Street Theatre and at Lincoln Center to wildly cheering audiences who give proof to Clive Barnes’ (N.Y. Times) comment, “Ailey returns trium phant. Hurry up, you should have gone yesterday.” CLARK COLLEGE

?ne Hundred and Sixteen Years: Reflections and Visions "

Garl Ware, 'Ó5 Vice President-Urban Affairs The Coca-Cola Company Speaker Clark College

Clark was founded in 1869 in a sparsely furnished room in Clark Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church In the Summerhill Section of Atlanta. However. Clark changed locations several times during its early years. Clark University (as it was then called) was among the first institutions established by religious denominations after the Civil War to provide Negroes with formal education. It was named for Bishop Davis W. Clark, first president of the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was operated under the auspices of the Society.

The student body consisted of children of all ages, and also adults, having for the first time an opportunity for formal education. The first instructors were described as good scholars and successful teachers. Bishop Gilbert Haven, a leader in the Church, visualized Clark as a school that would “set the tone" for all other Methodist educational Institutions for Negroes, and in 1871 the Methodist Advocate echoed his vision.

Moving to its second site at Whitehall and McDaniel Streets in 1872, Clark University remained there until 1881, at which time it moved to a 450-acre site in south Atlanta. With this change in location, the institution gradually began to realize some of the aspirations of its founders and was chartered in 1877.

Clark conferred its first degree in 1883. In the same year, The Clark University Theological School became Gammon Theological School under a new Dean, and in 1888 became Independent as Gammon Theological Seminary. The ties between the University and the Seminary remained strong throughout the years.

During the period 1935 to 1939, decisions were made and plans developed to have Clark join the Atlanta University Center complex for the purposes of cooperation, economy, and efficiency, and to strengthen its library and other academic facilities. In 1940, the name was changed from Clark University to Clark College. Work was begun in 1940 on an entirely new physical plant ad joining the campuses in the University Center complex (Atlanta University, Mor ris Brown, Spelman and Morehouse colleges). Clark College moved to its pre sent site in 1941. In the past century Clark has grown steadily in size and stature. It still, nonetheless, engages in self-studies, curriculum changes, and the endless search for improvement.

The history and heritage of Clark College represent much of what is genuine in the American dream. It is with much encouragement and great hope that, in the spirit of those who have gone before, the members of the Clark College Board of Trustees, its administration, its faculty, its students, and its alumni join in the labors of many others In transmitting the heritage of the past and in building a stronger Clark College. Dear Hrs. Hardeman:

Your gift of $10 gives the children of St. Jude hope that they will live like all kids—happy, healthy, and yes, enduring the normal growing pains of children.

They are normal in all aspects save one—their daily struggle for life. In this respect, they are unique.

For helping them with their unique problems, making it possible to beat their cancer, I thank you very much.

P. S. Daniel Jackson is one who thanks you for caring. Clark December, 1984 College Chapter I

"In public relations you can call for the total resources of the student," said Dr. Matthew Morrison, the public relations coordinator in Clark College's Mass Communication department since the fall of 1983. Morrison, who has been an educator for 17 years, finds students in the Atlanta University Center to be exciting and tolerant. "They allow me to be myself," he said. Through Morrison's advisement and encouragement the Clark College Chapter of PRSSA is meeting regularly and- planning the development of a student-run PR agency. Prior to coming to Clark, Morrison taught speech communication at Pembroke State University and trained and supervised teachers at the University of Georgia. .The West Virginia native was a speech graduate at David Lipscomb College in Nashville and completed his master and doctoral studies in Rhetoric and Public Address at Indiana State University. For the past 25 years Morrison has been a freelance editorial cartoonist and often incorporates his artistic talents in classroom activities. Outside of teaching, the man affectionately known as EDITORIAL OFFICE: "Doc” or "Dr. Matt" enjoys collecting old boxes and drawing sidewalk caricatures. He quips,"But all sidewalks Editor are beginning to look alike!" Then the well-known Daphne Jackson Morrison chuckle is heard.
