Arak and Gwydion (Some Thoughts on the Shadow Elves' History) By R. Sweeney Gwydion isn't a 'real' demon, but rather a creature of great power from the plane of shadow. Gwydion's evil was his enslavement of the ShadowElves. His torment is his betrayal by Arak. Unlike Vecna, he was not on the prime and could only be 'trapped' because he was trying to follow the Shadow Elves into RL. (Presumably to kill them or re-enslave them). I wonder what Arak was thinking, however. Would there be anyplace he could take the Shadow elves into exile where Gwydion could not follow? Did he think he could hide from such a powerful creature? Gwydion must have had an enemy. A sibling perhaps. The Shadow Elves must have acted as some sort of armed forces for him. Arak must have believed that if Gwydion suddenly found himself without his Slaves, he would have been destroyed by his rivals. However, there other.. less satisfying, perhaps, ways of re-writing ShadowElf history. Gwydion, the shadow-being, falls 'in love' with an elf from some other world. They mate, bear children. Woman dies, Gwydion takes his children and their children as slaves. Millenia pass. Arak was Gwydion's favorite. Perhaps, Gwydion had mated with one of the Shadow elves of unsurpassed beauty and begat Arak. Thus, he set his son above all the other slaves. Arak, however, desired more than to be the head of the slaves. He managed to betray his father to his enemies. Arak had intended patricide. He was going to take away Gwydion's protective armed forces, leaving him vulnerable to attack by his other enemies. -
The Nemedian Chroniclers #22 [WS16]
REHeapa Winter Solstice 2016 By Lee A. Breakiron A WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON Few fiction authors are as a widely published internationally as Robert E. Howard (e.g., in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Yugoslavian). As former REHupan Vern Clark states: Robert E. Howard has long been one of America’s stalwarts of Fantasy Fiction overseas, with extensive translations of his fiction & poetry, and an ever mushrooming distribution via foreign graphic story markets dating back to the original REH paperback boom of the late 1960’s. This steadily increasing presence has followed the growing stylistic and market influence of American fantasy abroad dating from the initial translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham House collections in Spain, France, and Germany. The growth of the HPL cult abroad has boded well for other American exports of the Weird Tales school, and with the exception of the Lovecraft Mythos, the fantasy fiction of REH has proved the most popular, becoming an international literary phenomenon with translations and critical publications in Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. [1] All this shows how appealing REH’s exciting fantasy is across cultures, despite inevitable losses in stylistic impact through translations. Even so, there is sometimes enough enthusiasm among readers to generate fandom activities and publications. We have already covered those in France. [2] Now let’s take a look at some other countries. GERMANY, AUSTRIA, AND SWITZERLAND The first Howard stories published in German were in the fanzines Pioneer #25 and Lands of Wonder ‒ Pioneer #26 (Austratopia, Vienna) in 1968 and Pioneer of Wonder #28 (Follow, Passau, Germany) in 1969. -

It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge their contributions here. First, I want to thank my two advisors and mentors, Elizabeth Scala and Daniel Birkholz. Liz Scala, for several years now, has provided me a steady balance of tough love, rigorous expectation, and critical acumen for which I can never repay. Her advice, her tutelage, and her direction were vital to my development as a scholar and to the success I have already known in academia. Months of dissertation anxiety and the crafting of a far-fetched project were met by Liz’s emphatically simple suggestion: “Why don’t you work on the North?” She could only ask this because she visited each of my professors individually to inquire as to my interests in seminars, and her inquiry testifies to her dedication as an advisor and teacher. -

The Nemedian Chroniclers #24 [AE17]
REHeapa Autumnal Equinox 2017 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART TWO By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw last time, the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was the first amateur press association (apa) dedicated to that author. Its founder, Tim C. Marion, started it in 1972 when he was 13 and edited it through the first 19 of its bimonthly Mailings, but left afterward since he was ultimately more interested in fan activities than Howard as a literary figure. Before that, discontent with his leadership and with the real dearth of worthwhile essays and critiques during the early years led to future literary critic Don Herron and others to leave and create The Hyperborian League (THL) apa in October, 1975. Its official editor (OE) was Herron and it was “devoted to the creative discussion of authors Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard and their works,” though material on other fantasy writers and poets was welcomed. Herron said he spelled the name of the apa “Hyperborian” rather than “Hyperborean” because he wanted to emphasize the fact that it was devoted to both CAS (whence Hyperborean) and REH (whence Hyborian). It would still be occasionally misspelled, even on covers. Its official organ document was titled “Skull & Sandalwood,” suggested by REH’s “Skull-Face” and CAS’s Sandalwood. The fanzines composing the quarterly Mailings were at first stapled by the contributors and left so by the OE, who collected them and mailed them out to the current individual members. He also distributed some copies to libraries, sent “speculative” (“spec”) copies to recruit prospective members, and sold remaining ones to defray postage costs. -

Issue #3 December 2014 Volume 2 No. 2 Published Quarterly by Scott Sheaffer For REHeapa December 2014 Mailing Contents © Scott Sheaffer Except Where Otherwise Noted Write to [email protected] For A Print Quality File About ten years ago, Ben Szumskyj asked me to review the Robert E. Howard collection The Moon of Skulls for REH: Two-Gun Raconteur when Damon Sasser allowed Ben to guest edit an issue. Ben specified a 1,000 word piece. Well, I really got into it and ended up writing over 5,600 words. I worked hard to cut more than 1,000 words over two revisions. I realized that only heavy re-writing and a new approach was going to get me near 1,000 words. I eventually completed a 1,131 word review for Ben. Since I put so much work into it, I wanted someone to read my 4,589 word version. (Of course, the current word count is going to be differnt since I made some slight revisions for its use here.)f I first published this long review in The Dalriadic Chronicles #42 which ran in SSWFT, a sword & sorcery and weird fiction amateur press association, for the Autumn 2005 mailing. Scott The Moon of Skulls by Robert E. Howard, Wildside Press, 2005. 216 pages. Edited by Paul Her- man with an Introduction by Mark Finn. H.C. Robert E. Howard (1906-1936) is one of the fantasy genre’s most important writers. Howard, a native Texan and proud Southerner, wrote and published tales set in created fantasy worlds before Tolkien’s The Hobbit appeared and decades before The Lord of the Rings’ success. -

Rowdy Geirsson rated it really liked it Nov 25, One of the reasons Norse mythology is such an integral part of modern culture in the English-speaking world could be that little was known about it outside the Nordic region until the 19th century. His mission is to enchant and drown people with his outstanding and fascinating fiddle. Skip to main content. That's especially true in Norway, which has a rich Norse mythology along with plenty of folk tales. Josefin L Sara Westman. Details if other :. The race of Scandinavian trolls was described as being stupid and slow, much like a bear in temperament; perhaps this is why trolls were rumored to keep them as pets. The King's stepmother objected and stole their babies, pinning the blame on the girl and eventually persuading the King to kill her. Sort order. Folk Tales. Maybe it would be better to just read the occasional story from this book. Interesting for an overview of folktales and legends for those who do not speak Scandinavian languages.
