We are seeking a talented individual with strong research skills to join our Research team as a Research Scientist. In this role, you’ll develop and execute rigorous research projects focused on CA’s current and under-development solutions for improving student outcomes in reading and mathematics, especially for students who are historically underserved. You’ll use a variety of data types, study designs, and analysis strategies to answer important questions related to maximizing the success of all students, including students who are unprepared for the grade in which they find themselves and students who are likely to receive a lower quality education. This is a remote position which will work collaboratively with a team of other researchers, most of whom are also working remotely. Travel expectations: Less than 10% of total time. Travel for this position will likely include one semi-annual team meeting, one semi-annual technical advisory committee meeting, and travel to national conferences when proposals have been accepted. Essential Job Functions The impact you’ll have: You’ll be partnered with a dynamic team to design studies that answer actionable research questions about numerous educational interventions, products, and services You’ll draft documentation for internal and external audiences, including process documentation, analysis specifications, and reporting of results You will have opportunities to present research findings to diverse audiences, including staff meetings, meetings with external clients, and professional conferences You’ll contribute to quality control processes to ensure the accuracy of data, analyses, and findings of research project Qualifications Preferred (years of experience, education level etc.) Who we’re looking for: Ph.D. and 3+ years required within the education research, psychometrics/educational measurement, psychology, or other quantitative social science discipline Demonstrated practical experience working on education research and/or evaluation projects in a non-academic setting Demonstrated experience with matching, hierarchical modeling, clustering or other data reduction techniques, and other complex statistical methods Knowledge of educational measurement principles, including familiarity with psychometric concepts such as measurement error, validity, and reliability estimation and IRT Experience with a research-oriented programming language (preferably SAS or R) for manipulating data and conducting basic statistical analyses. The intern/post-doc will work with the researchers at SRI and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) on an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) funded project, which uses statistical and machine learning techniques to understand the differences in test-taking processes for learners with and without disabilities. Essential Job Functions An individual accepted into this position will spend at least 80% of their time conducting statistical analysis in the secure data room for this project in SRI’s Menlo Park office. Depending on interest and funding, the hired individual could work on a variety of other IES, NSF, and private foundation funded projects at SRI. As part of the research team, the intern/post-doc will have the opportunity to receive psychometrics and machine learning training from SRI and UIUC and co-author papers with the PIs. Qualifications Preferred (years of experience, education level etc.) • Two years of coursework in a Ph.D. program or a Master’s degree completed in a relevant field. • Fluent in R programming, including writing statistical functions, data manipulation and visualization, and regular expressions (e.g., handling string/text/log data). • Knowledge in statistics and data science including hypothesis testing, linear and generalized linear models, and the basics of supervised/unsupervised learning. • Experience with machine learning, natural language processing, and text mining is a plus.
