October 15, 2008, 8:00 p.m., Pollack Hall. The concert is in support of the Jazz Area Visiting Artist Series (JAVAS), a series of short-term residencies given by internationally renowned jazz artists and pedagogues who work with current jazz students at the Schulich School of Music. JAVAS is an initiative of Friends of McGill Jazz, a group of volunteers who want to promote Jazz at McGill. According to Band director Gordon Foote, “In typical jazz fashion, the members of the band are not nervous to be on stage with Oliver, but are very excited. Oliver Jones was on the original board of the Friends of McGill Jazz, and was happy to donate his talent to help the students out. We are delighted that he shares our enthusiasm for this series.” Oliver Jones attended last year’s JAVAS fundraising concert, featuring Montreal jazz vocalist Ranee Lee. Born and raised in Saint Henri, Oliver Jones has been a fixture on the Montreal jazz scene for over 50 years. He has recorded many discs for Justin Time Records, including ‘Have Fingers, Will Travel,’ ‘Yuletide Swing,’ ‘Dizzy-Nest,’ and ‘Just You, Just Me,’ a recording with singer Ranee Lee. Past Jazz Area Visiting Artists include Slide Hampton and George Garzone. Admission is $50 ($15 students).
