BPL partnered with the NYC Department of Small Business Services to open Workforce1 centers at Central and Sunset Park libraries, to assist thousands of Brooklynites in finding jobs.

Ensuring that our Brooklyn communities have access to the latest materials and resources is a top priority at BPL. Our PowerUP! Business Plan Competition, in partnership with Citi Foundation, helps Brooklynites realize ACCESS their dreams of starting a business. 9 An Inviting An integral part of providing access to resources is creating inviting spaces for patrons throughout the BPL system. Recent upgrades also include a brand new building and location for Kensington Library, the first “green” library in NYC, the grand re-opening of Park Slope Library and a new learning center at New Lots Library.

Cultural events at Brooklyn Public Library reflect our dedication to fostering the community’s creativity. Art exhibitions at Central Library feature the borough’s great artists or Brooklyn-themed pieces, including a recent Diverse send up to fashion illustration and a look back at the humble beginnings of the Central Library building. The CULTURE Library has also partnered with local artists and arts groups at branches like Cortelyou and Red Hook, and has featured pieces from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation/NYC Department of Education Bookmaking Competition.

13 Like the rest of the tri-state area, Brooklyn was severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy. BPL suffered Weathering the devastating damages to Coney Island Library, as well as significant damages to Red Hook, Brighton Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay libraries. Despite the losses and with limited resources, BPL STORM was able to provide vital help to neighborhoods most affected by the hurricane. This included serving as a Warming Center and a FEMA-designated shelter and by dispatching Bookmobiles where needed.

In addition, the Bike the Branches spring appeal was a fun, new addition to fundraising efforts at BPL.

17 FUTURE Brooklyn Public Library developed a strategic plan through feedback from patrons, elected officials, trustees, Planning employees and community members. Six major goals were identified, which would adapt with the needs of our Brooklyn communities: education, access, culture, inclusion, space and stewardship.
