Lillian Wald (1867 - 1940) Nursing is love in action, and there is no finer manifestation of it than the care of the poor and disabled in their own homes Lillian D. Wald was a nurse, social worker, public health official, teacher, author, editor, publisher, women's rights activist, and the founder of American community nursing. Her unselfish devotion to humanity is recognized around the world and her visionary programs have been widely copied everywhere. She was born on March 10, 1867, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the third of four children born to Max and Minnie Schwartz Wald. The family moved to Rochester, New York, and Wald received her education in private schools there. Her grandparents on both sides were Jewish scholars and rabbis; one of them, grandfather Schwartz, lived with the family for several years and had a great influence on young Lillian. She was a bright student, completing high school when she was only 15. Wald decided to travel, and for six years she toured the globe and during this time she worked briefly as a newspaper reporter. In 1889, she met a young nurse who impressed Wald so much that she decided to study nursing at New York City Hospital. She graduated and, at the age of 22, entered Women's Medical College studying to become a doctor. At the same time, she volunteered to provide nursing services to the immigrants and the poor living on New York's Lower East Side. Visiting pregnant women, the elderly, and the disabled in their homes, Wald came to the conclusion that there was a crisis in need of immediate redress. -

Specifically, College Board is honoring schools who reached 50% or higher female representation in either of the two AP computer science courses in 2018, or whose percentage of the female examinees met or exceeded that of the school's female population in 2018. Out of more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses, only 685 have achieved this important result. Mike K., 924 Gilman Street One of the ideas behind ABC is breaking down the barriers between bands and people and making everyone equal. There is no Us and Them. Chris Boarts-Larson, ABC No Rio Kurt Cobain once told an interviewer, “punk rock should mean freedom.”1 The Nirvana singer was arguing that punk, as an idea, had the potential to tran- scend the boundaries of any particular sound or style, allowing musicians an enormous degree of artistic autonomy. But while punk music has often served as a platform for creative expression and symbolic protest, its libratory potential stems from a more fundamental source. Punk, at its core, is a form of direct action. Instead of petitioning the powerful for inclusion, the punk movement has built its own elaborate network of counter-institutions, including music venues, media, record labels, and distributors. These structures have operated most notably as cultural and economic alternatives to the corporate entertainment industry, and, as such, they should also be understood as sites of resistance to the privatizing 0026-3079/2013/5202-023$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:2 (2013): 23-42 23 24 Dawson Barrett agenda of neo-liberalism. For although certain elements of punk have occasion- ally proven marketable on a large scale, the movement itself has been an intense thirty-year struggle to maintain autonomous cultural spaces.2 When punk emerged in the mid-1970s, it quickly became a subject of in- terest to activists and scholars who saw in it the potential seeds of a new social movement. -

It is bounded by 14th Street to the north, the East River to the east, the Brooklyn Bridge to the south, and Fourth Avenue and the Bowery to the west, extending to Baxter and Pearl Streets south of Canal Street. This community is filled with a diversity of cultures, religions, incomes, and languages. Its character comes from its heritage as a historic and present day first stop for many immigrants. CD 3 is one of the largest board Districts and is the fourth most densely populated District, with approximately 164,063 people.1 Our residents are very proud of their historic and diverse neighborhood, however, the very characteristics that make this District unique also make it a challenging place to plan and ensure services for all residents and businesses. Demographic Change The CD 3 population is changing in many ways. The 2000 census reported that 23% of our population, over 38,000 of our residents, required income support. By 2014, this number had jumped to about 41% of the total population, over 68,000 persons.2 The number of people receiving Medicaid-only assistance also continues to increase, climbing from 45,724 in 20053 to more than 48,200 people currently.4 Our community is an example of the growing income inequality that is endemic in New York City. -

INTRODUCTION The project site is located in the Borough of Manhattan and includes the median malls on Allen Street between Delancey Street and East Broadway and on Pike Street between East Broadway and South Streets (sees Figure 2A-1). The Proposed Project would reconstruct the median mall sections to provide public green space, recreational space, and amenities, would improve the overall visual character of Allen and Pike Streets between Delancey and South Streets, and would serve as a gateway to the East River Esplanade from interior blocks. This section considers existing land use, zoning, and public land use policies for the project site and the surrounding 400-foot study area. Land use issues associated with the Proposed Project include potential changes in local land uses and neighborhood land use patterns. Zoning and public policy issues include the compatibility of the proposed modifications to the median malls with existing zoning and public policies. PRINCIPAL CONCLUSIONS As described below, this analysis concludes that the Proposed Project would be in keeping with and supportive of existing land uses in the study area, and that it would be consistent with zoning and public policy for the area. Overall, the Proposed Project would not result in any significant adverse impacts to land use, zoning or public policy. B. EXISTING CONDITIONS LAND USE PROJECT SITE The project site includes the Allen and Pike Street malls and the adjacent travel lanes. The Allen Street malls are located between Delancey Street and East Broadway. The Pike Street malls are located between East Broadway and South Street. -
