Students participate in activities geared toward promoting comfort and community as they enter into high school. Students interact with student leaders, assistant principals and other key members of our Dewey family. Our SummerBridge program also helps students make friends and know some of the exciting opportunities we have at our school. Summer Summer Bridge S.T.E.M Academy - K56J Screened Program Email [email protected] for required interview This program will provide students with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with opportunities to explore the disciplines of Computer Science, Engineering and Robotics. Students will gain fluency with the design process and are expected to apply their skills beyond the classroom. STEM STEM Academy Pre-Med and Health Academy - K56L Screened Program Email [email protected] for required interview This program equips students with the knowledge, skills and competencies for success in college pre-med programs. This 4- year math-science program culminates in internships at various medical facilities. Students graduate with CPR and at least two other certifications offered by the American Red Cross. Med and and Health Academy Med - Pre Academy of Law and Justice - K56M Ed. Opt. Program This program offers opportunities for students to study law and explore the struggle for justice and human rights, and develop into a more civic-minded individual. Program electives focus on an introduction to law, the criminal justice system, and Constitutional Law. Students will have the opportunity to participate in Moot Court Mock Trial the support of the Justice Resource Center the law firm of Kasowitz, Benson and Torres. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to secure internships with a variety of law related organizations. Academy ofAcademy Justice Law and Academy for Business and Culinary Arts - K56A Ed. Opt. Program This program provides students with management theories and operational talents which will enable our graduates to enter the business world, hospitality field or post secondary institutions with experiences and credentials that set them apart from all other graduates. Every student in the program will have the opportunity to work in a State of The Art Multi Million Dollar Culinary Kitchen beginning in the 9th grade. Through the skills learned during their time in Dewey, and the experiences gathered while interning, our graduates will be able to achieve great success in any field they choose. Opt. Program Jazz & Theater Hip-Hop & Contemporary Dance Students will experience courses that Social/Ballroom Dance History of Dance encompass Dance, Theater and Visual Art. Dance Company Students have the opportunity to present their works in Visual Art Shows, Theater Fine Arts Major Studio Art Performances (plays, musicals and student Ceramics written shows), as well as Dance Showcases. Illustration Graphic Design Students will be offered the opportunity to Photography earn an Arts Endorsed Diploma upon Art History/A.P. Portfolio Academy ofAcademy Fine and Performing Ats completion of their arts major. John Dewey High School is adding a NEW 6TH ACADEMY "The Academy for Teaching and Learning” The Academy for Teaching and Learning-K56C The Academy of Teaching and Learning at J.D.H.S. gives students the opportunity to explore fields in education. This program's 4 year sequence will provide a strong foundation for students who are interested in becoming educators. Students have the ability to take several classes that are focused on pedagogy and a focus on social emotional growth for teaching children. In partnership with Kingsborough Community College students will have the opportunity to earn college credits while taking classes through their Education Department.
