Autonomist Marxist Theory and Practice in the Current Crisis Brian Marks1 University of Arizona School of Geography and Development [email protected] Abstract Autonomist Marxism is a political tendency premised on the autonomy of the proletariat. Working class autonomy is manifested in the self-activity of the working class independent of formal organizations and representations, the multiplicity of forms that struggles take, and the role of class composition in shaping the overall balance of power in capitalist societies, not least in the relationship of class struggles to the character of capitalist crises. Class composition analysis is applied here to narrate the recent history of capitalism leading up to the current crisis, giving particular attention to China and the United States. A global wave of struggles in the mid-2000s was constituitive of the kinds of working class responses to the crisis that unfolded in 2008-10. The circulation of those struggles and resultant trends of recomposition and/or decomposition are argued to be important factors in the balance of political forces across the varied geography of the present crisis. It’s the tale of a man who sat in a local diner waiting for his lunch. His countenance was down, he was feeling discouraged, and his tone was melancholy. When his waitress saw he was feeling low, she immediately suggested he go see Grimaldi. The circus was in town, and Grimaldi was a clown who made everyone laugh. The waitress was certain Grimaldi could cheer up her sad customer. Little did she know with whom she was speaking. The man looked up at her and replied, “But, ma’am. I am Grimaldi.” In many ways, this is a picture of the Pandemic Population. On the outside, they’re clowning around on Snapchat and TikTok, laughing at memes and making others laugh at filtered photos on social media. Inside, however, their mental health has gone south. It appears their life is a comedy, but in reality, it feels like a tragedy. -

This anger has repeatedly resulted in violence against women. Because incels are a relatively new phenomenon, there are many gaps in our knowledge, including how, and to what extent, incel forums function as online communities. The current study begins to fill this lacuna by qualitatively analyzing the incels.co forum to understand how community is created through online discourse. Both inductive and deductive thematic analyses were conducted on 17 threads (3400 posts). The results confirm that the incels.co forum functions as a community. Four themes in relation to community were found: The incel brotherhood; We can disagree, but you’re wrong; We are all coping here; and Will the real incel come forward. -

Gabrielle Adjerad In light of what has been institutionalized in the nineties as “intersectionality” (Crenshaw, 1989), but emanated from a long tradition of feminism fostered by women of color (Hill-Collins, Bilge, 2016), feminist theory has increasingly shed light on the plurality of women’s experiences, the inseparable, overlapping and simultaneous differences constituting their identities, and the materiality of the various dominations engendered. At the turn of the twenty-first century, this paradigm seems compelling to address fictional diasporic narratives addressing the diverse discriminations encountered by migrant women and their descendants in the United States. However, adopting an intersectional feminist approach of literature, for research or in the classroom, raises methodological issues that this paper contends with. Some thinkers have considered the double pitfall of considering, on the one hand, the text as a mimetic document of plural lives and, on the other, of essentializing a symbolical “écriture feminine” (Felski, 1989). Some have highlighted the necessary critical movement between the archetypal dimension of gender and the social and historical individuals diversely affected by this ideology (De Lauretis, 1987). Yet, beyond this tension between an attention paid to abstraction on the one hand and experience on the other, we can consider that hegemony is made of different ideologies that may contradict one another (Balibar, Wallerstein, 1991). -

The Revival of the Bhikkhunī Order and the Decline of the Sāsana Bhikkhu Anālayo 1 Abstract In this article I study the revival of the bhikkhunī order in the Theravāda traditions and its supposed relation to a decline of the Buddha’s dispensation. Introduction My presentation begins with the contrast between the positive evalua- tion of the existence of an order of bhikkhunīs in early Buddhist discourse and the “prediction of decline,” according to which the establishing of this order would result in a decline of the Buddha’s dispensation (sāsana). Academic Freedom and Controversial Speech about Campus Governance — Rogers Brubaker — Rogers Brubaker is Professor of Sociology, University of California, Los Angeles and UCLA Foundation Chair; Visiting Professor, CEU. Classical definitions of academic freedom focused on freedom of re- search and teaching. In the American context, the right of professors to speak freely as citizens outside the university has also been emphasized. But many recent controversies over academic freedom in the US—and I limit my comments to the US—have turned on speech inside the univer- sity yet outside the traditional domains of research and teaching. Research and teaching continue of course to be central to the defense of academic freedom in the face of external pressures, notably from private and public funders, government regulators, and the populist right. But I have been asked to address internal threats to academic freedom. And while some internal controversies have focused on the freedom of research and teaching, many have focused on other issues. The most widely discussed of these controversies have concerned invita- tions to controversial outside speakers. Public attention has focused on efforts by the campus left to “disinvite” or “de-platform” speakers such as Charles Murray at Middlebury and Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter 93 i6 AF - 00 Book.indb 93 2017.11.22. 9:01 at Berkeley. These widely publicized incidents have already generat- ed a substantial backlash: several conservative state legislatures have passed campus speech bills.1 The campus right has also sought to pre- vent or disrupt events involving controversial (especially pro-Palestinian) outside speakers. But there is another kind of internal academic freedom controversy that I would like to highlight. -

The development and spread of early Buddhism from the third century BCE has been intrinsically linked with the Mauryan Emperor Asoka, and is consequently reliant on the identification of ‘Mauryan’ remains in the archaeological record.
