The setting is heavily forested and mountainous, located on Grinnell Creek near its confluence with the North Fork of the Shoshone River, about 6 miles from the east entrance into Yellowstone National Park. The 32 buildings and structures (24 buildings of which are contributing) are laid out in typical rustic dude ranch style: a centrally located grand lodge surrounded by guest cabins and support buildings. Construction materials are primarily wood (log or board and batten) with stone and concrete foundations. The contributing buildings and structures evolved over a period of years from 1924 to 1950, with minimal remodeling to accommodate plumbing and mechanical updates. They have historic integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association with early Western dude ranching. The Shoshone Lodge is the most intact of the dude ranches in this multiple property nomination. Detailed Description The beautiful

Cross Group Leader Forest Health Management Renewable Resources USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Region 740 Simms Street Golden, CO 80401 ABSTRACT Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae) infestations frequently result from disturbance events that create large volumes of weakened Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees. In 1988, extensive wildfires occurred in Yellowstone National Park and the Shoshone National Forest. Populations of Douglas-fir beetle increased in fire-scorched trees caused by the wildfires. Subsequent generations of the beetles moved from these injured trees to undamaged trees in neighboring stands on the Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming. This outbreak has now moved and is concentrated along the North Fork of the Shoshone River. Beetle populations continue to build and continued high levels of mortality can be expected along the North Fork. Continued use of sanitation harvest and anti-aggregation pheromones, where possible is recommended. 1 INTRODUCTION The Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins) infests and kills Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) throughout its range in North America. Typically, the beetle reproduces in scattered trees that are highly stressed, such as windfall, defoliated or fire- scorched trees (Furniss, 1962; Furniss, 1965; Lessard and Schmid, 1990). If enough suitable host material is present, beetles can increase in the stressed trees and infest nearby healthy trees (Furniss et al., 1981).

    Elephant Head Lodge Employee Prospective Dear Prospective Employee, Thank you for your interest in employment with the Elephant Head Lodge, which is a small 15 log cabin family oriented mountain lodge, located East of Yellowstone National Park and in the Shoshone National Forest. Our highway from Cody is often called the most scenic 50 miles in America, as stated by President Theodore Roosevelt. We are 40 miles west of historic Cody, Wyoming. The Elephant Head Lodge gets its name from a rock formation overlooking it. The Lodge, Restaurant, and the “Trapper” cabin were all built in 1910 by Buffalo Bill Cody’s niece, Josephine Thurston, and her husband Harry W. Thurston. Harry chose the site for its water. He was one of the first Rangers in the Shoshone Forest and knew about the spring that still serves the Lodge today. It was a dependable source of good water for early travelers to Yellowstone – and for trappers and Indians before them. The Elephant Head Lodge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
