Daniel: You are crazy! How could you do this? I couldn't even look at you! Alexis: Then don't look at me. But I need you to know why I did this. Since I was 5 I've known - (那就不要看。 Daniel: Don't! Alexis: Since I was 5! I felt like I've been dropped in the wrong skin. This is about correcting a mistake. Daniel: Oh is that all really? Alexis: That's the fast version. Daniel: You have no idea what you put your family through. We thought you were dead, Alex. Mom has to bury her son, she's never recovered. And your father... 還有你爸爸… 3 媒體 媒睇 Alexis: What, moved on? Ignacio: Let me get this straight…your boss' brother wears women's clothes? Betty: No, that's a transvestite. Alexis is a transsexual. Ignacio: What's the difference? Betty: Transsexual have surgery to reassign themselves to the opposite sex. Ignacio: Ouch. Hilda: Wow those hands are too small to belong to a man. You got to know where she get her nails done. Alexis: Ok let's cut to it. They soften the jaw slim the nose soften the hairline cut the adams apple and then there are the implants: cheeks, breasts, buttocks, ass. I will spare you with the more graphic details but just put the rumour a rest – they don't save 『it' in a jar. Betty: (shrugs)That's good to know (looks at Alexis' patch on her forearm) (還好。)(瞪眼看著 Alexis 在手臂上貼著的膠貼) Alexis: And no. I haven't given up smoking, it's a hormone patch so my mustache doesn't grow back. Betty: Really? Where did you get that? Cos I need to bleach all the time and it's such a pain. Cliff: Amanda: Oh my god. It's happened. You are looking past what's on the outside and seeing what's on the inside. You are falling for him. You are falling for an average man. Marc: Oh god. I am. I am an average man lover. What do I do? Amanda: You accept it. You are deeper than you think. It's OK. We all have flaws. Marc在這集要Betty扮作他的女友,還招呼他媽 xiv 媽到Betty家中吃飯,然而他媽媽並不領情 : Marc: Mom, Betty and her family were pretty nice to us tonight. ) Marc's Mom: Her family? Don't get me started on her family. Her father - why should i pay his taxes? He broke in this country. ) Marc: Mom. ) Marc's Mom: And the sister? I don't wanna use the 's' word but slut. There. I said it. No wonder she got knocked up in the second grade.(Justin breezes past, saying 'The golden girls marathon is on')And I don't even know what that is. Marc: That? Marc's mom: Please, he's just so...swishy! And the mother doesn't say anything - it just makes me sick! Marc: Ok, shut your mouth, mom! Swishy? Marc's Mom: What did you say to me?

  • The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González
IS UGLY THE NEW SEXY? The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense.

SETTING UP CAMP: IDENTIFYING CAMP THROUGH THEME AND STRUCTURE A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Michael T. Schuyler January, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Cornelius B. Pratt, Advisory Chair, Strategic Communication John A. Lent, Broadcasting, Telecommunications & Mass Media Paul Swann, Film & Media Arts Roberta Sloan, External Member, Theater i © Copyright 2010 by Michael T. Schuyler All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Camp scholarship remains vague. While academics don’t shy away from writing about this form, most exemplify it more than define it. Some even refuse to define it altogether, arguing that any such attempt causes more problems than it solves. So, I ask the question, can we define camp via its structure, theme and character types? After all, we can do so for most other genres, such as the slasher film, the situation comedy or even the country song; therefore, if camp relies upon identifiable character types and proliferates the same theme repeatedly, then, it exists as a narrative system. In exploring this, I find that, as a narrative system, though, camp doesn’t add to the dominant discursive system. Rather, it exists in opposition to it, for camp disseminates the theme that those outside of heteronormativity and acceptability triumph not in spite of but because of what makes them “different,” “othered” or “marginalized.” Camp takes many forms. So, to demonstrate its reliance upon a certain structure, stock character types and a specific theme, I look at the overlaps between seemingly disperate examples of this phenomenon.

Although stocks and bonds continue to change hands on Wall Street, the true centre of corporate power in America has moved to Midtown East. In this area you'll find the Citibank's, the Madison Avenue advertising agencies, the multinational law firms, the Trump Towers, the Bloomingdales department stores and deluxe shops such as Gucci. You'll have a hard time finding truly budget restaurants and hotels in this area. Lower Manhattan What New Yorkers still call downtown or Lower Manhattan refers to the downtown of the 19th century in the Wall Street area at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. This area has been undergoing revitalization, especially with older commercial buildings being converted into deluxe condos. When the Dutch ruled Manhattan, Wall Street was indeed a wall used to protect the colonists from the indigenous peoples. South of Washington Square in Greenwich Village, you'll find the old downtown, the Wall Street area, the site of what remains of the World Trade Centre complex, a growing Chinatown due to robust immigration, Little Italy, the trendy SOHO (South of Houston), TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal), and NOHO (North of Houston) areas, where many of the "in" clubs and restaurants are, and large areas of public housing and abandoned warehouses and factories.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists By Dawn Temples In the flashy, fast-paced world of fashion journalism, Betty Suarez struggles to prove that what’s inside a person is just as important as what they wear. Determined to work her way up at MODE magazine, Suarez tackles any task she’s given, from picking up laundry to single-handedly orchestrating a celebrity-baby cover shoot. Successful women at MODE are cut-throat and demonstrate many masculine characteristics that female journalists have portrayed in both television and movies of the past.
