  • The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González
IS UGLY THE NEW SEXY? The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense.

SETTING UP CAMP: IDENTIFYING CAMP THROUGH THEME AND STRUCTURE A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Michael T. Schuyler January, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Cornelius B. Pratt, Advisory Chair, Strategic Communication John A. Lent, Broadcasting, Telecommunications & Mass Media Paul Swann, Film & Media Arts Roberta Sloan, External Member, Theater i © Copyright 2010 by Michael T. Schuyler All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Camp scholarship remains vague. While academics don’t shy away from writing about this form, most exemplify it more than define it. Some even refuse to define it altogether, arguing that any such attempt causes more problems than it solves. So, I ask the question, can we define camp via its structure, theme and character types? After all, we can do so for most other genres, such as the slasher film, the situation comedy or even the country song; therefore, if camp relies upon identifiable character types and proliferates the same theme repeatedly, then, it exists as a narrative system. In exploring this, I find that, as a narrative system, though, camp doesn’t add to the dominant discursive system. Rather, it exists in opposition to it, for camp disseminates the theme that those outside of heteronormativity and acceptability triumph not in spite of but because of what makes them “different,” “othered” or “marginalized.” Camp takes many forms. So, to demonstrate its reliance upon a certain structure, stock character types and a specific theme, I look at the overlaps between seemingly disperate examples of this phenomenon.

1 Manhattan Information Booklet New York City Guide This booklet gives you information about Manhattan in general followed by information on most of the places that we visit 2 Manhattan Information Booklet A guide to New York Neighbourhoods Midtown Manhattan The current city centre is located from 42nd Street to Central Park, with the main corporate power centre southeast of Central Park. Although stocks and bonds continue to change hands on Wall Street, the true centre of corporate power in America has moved to Midtown East. In this area you'll find the Citibank's, the Madison Avenue advertising agencies, the multinational law firms, the Trump Towers, the Bloomingdales department stores and deluxe shops such as Gucci. You'll have a hard time finding truly budget restaurants and hotels in this area. Lower Manhattan What New Yorkers still call downtown or Lower Manhattan refers to the downtown of the 19th century in the Wall Street area at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. This area has been undergoing revitalization, especially with older commercial buildings being converted into deluxe condos. When the Dutch ruled Manhattan, Wall Street was indeed a wall used to protect the colonists from the indigenous peoples. South of Washington Square in Greenwich Village, you'll find the old downtown, the Wall Street area, the site of what remains of the World Trade Centre complex, a growing Chinatown due to robust immigration, Little Italy, the trendy SOHO (South of Houston), TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal), and NOHO (North of Houston) areas, where many of the "in" clubs and restaurants are, and large areas of public housing and abandoned warehouses and factories.

It is a great pity I have not met him face to face yet, but his helps are always there to push me forward. I believe I could talk to him one day and extend my thanks directly somewhere in China or America. Thanks to all the professors in the project. Two years are too short for me to learn more from them. Prof. Richard Garrett shared his insights in culture studies. Dr. Dennis Ciesielski and Prof. Madelon Kohler provided much fun in the courses of Grammar and Social Linguistic. Prof. Teresa Burns patiently and precisely taught us to write an academic paper. Dr. Yuanyuan Hu refreshed my understanding of college English teaching, and Dr. Kara Candito instructed practical skills in the online course. The classmates I met in this project are study partners more than friends. Even we are varied in age, background and living cities, the discussions to the common theme made the classes lively and impressive.

  • How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists By Dawn Temples In the flashy, fast-paced world of fashion journalism, Betty Suarez struggles to prove that what’s inside a person is just as important as what they wear. As a budding journalist with a dream job, she exemplifies a fish-out-of-water with her braces, glasses and lack of fashion sense. Determined to work her way up at MODE magazine, Suarez tackles any task she’s given, from picking up laundry to single-handedly orchestrating a celebrity-baby cover shoot. Successful women at MODE are cut-throat and demonstrate many masculine characteristics that female journalists have portrayed in both television and movies of the past. Suarez contemplates throughout the show what sacrifices she’s willing to make to become a successful female journalist and eventually reach her goal of starting her own magazine. In the fall of 2006, ABC-TV launched a new television show, Ugly Betty, produced by Salma Hayek. The show, ‘Yo soy Betty, la fea,’1 was already a success as a South American telenovela that was first aired in Colombia, South America in 1999 and began to air in America on the Telemundo network in 2000. The telenovela showed a woman who was intelligent, but not very attractive, who became a secretary at a fashion The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists By Dawn Temples 2 design company named Ecomoda.
