    Sanctioning Bodies Tyrants used to love American automobile racing and so did demagogues, idealists, fat cats, laissez-faire capitalists, doomsayers, and saviors. Making matters worse, back in the 20th century such dangerous creatures were famous for banding together for mass hallucinations and the free exchange of fancy. Terrible things happened to racing whenever they did. They had it pretty good, did those racers of the early 20th century, who were free to race as they wished, without sanctioning bodies ordering them around. But by the 1920s racing was in crisis. The contest board of the powerful American Automobile Association, most feared and probably worst of all sanctioning bodies, had steered racing to the brink of a precipice. Its over-developed Millers and Duesenbergs tended to run flawlessly or blow up from the stress, and, in either case, were traveling much too fast for sanity and safety on the bricked surface of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to say nothing of the AAA’s tournament of even faster board tracks. Operating costs were out of control, and a clique egotistical fat cat racing car owners had matters firmly under their thumb. And although the stated purpose of the Indy 500 was to further development the automobile, the only piece of advanced technology to spew forth from the Hoosier laboratory of speed had been the rear-view mirror. The Great Depression of the 1930 ameliorated a lot of this, cutting the speeds and putting an end to the supercharged Millers and Duesenbergs, wiping out the fat cats, bankrupting all the looming lumber bowls, and almost doing the same thing to the Indy 500.

Our thanks to Chevrolet and Firestone for their continued support. 842-7005 Fernandez Racing Backs Return Of AARWBA ‘Straight Shooters’ Award The “Straight Shooters” Award, in memory of photographers Art Flores and Ron Hussey, will be presented by AARWBA for the next three years with support from Fernandez Racing of the Adrian Fernandez Indy Racing League. Tom Anderson The “Straight Shooters” Award is intended to recognize an individual or group who show care for others in the racing photographers’ community or for special achievement. It was the idea of Flores, the late AARWBA photo committee chairman, and was first presented three years ago. Flores, who died last year, and Hussey, who died in 2000, were both long-time award-winning motorsports photographers.

    OFFICIAL DIGITAL PROGRAM 2019 OPEN-WHEELS.COM 500 MILE RACE Welcome To the Open-Wheels.com 500 Mile Race On behalf of the staff at Open-Wheels.com, welcome to the inaugural running of the Open-Wheels.com 500 Mile Race presented by Mitchell Transmissions. After many months of planning, preparation, discussions, and excitement, we begin our first chapter in what is hopefully a storied history for our November event. My dreams, hopes, and visions for this race first began to circulate in late May, wondering what it would take to replicate (to the best of our ability) what it feels like for a driver to be part of the Indianapolis 500 in real life. To feel the pressure of qualifications, and what it means to simply make the race - not to mention the elation that one lucky competitor will enjoy upon winning the event itself. Indianapolis is about so much more than its four corners, or what happens for 200 laps within its pristine white walls. For some, it is a rousing pre-race ceremony that includes Taps, Back Home Again in Indiana, and always a memorable flyover. For others, it is the green flag that seems to take ages to finally get here - before it finally happens in the blink of an eye, and 33 daring drivers funnel into Turn 1 at over 200 miles per hour. This venue breathes tradition and honor, begging to tell the stories of its past while simutaneously waiting patiently to make new memories. This month, I hope we do just that by leaving our mark on the sim racing world and producing the most authentic, exciting, pressure-packed 500-mile race that iRacing’s proud history has ever seen.

    Vital Express's Drake Performs the "Double" at Indy USAC Standout Competes in Menards Infiniti Pro Series Freedom 100 and Tony Hulman Classic Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) June 9, 2004 -- Jay Drake has undoubtedly turned some heads in his Menards Infiniti Pro Series debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week. Making his series debut, qualifying for the Futuba Freedom 100 and firmly establishing himself as a contender have been at the top of the agenda. As if that wasn't enough fun for one week, Drake also did double duty Saturday, as he competed in the Futuba Freedom 100 and then traveled to the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track to compete in the Tony Hulman Classic USAC National Sprint Car event. Drake, who qualified his No. 25 Vital Express sponsored machine in fourth position for the Futuba Freedom 100, posted a two-lap qualifying run average of 189.192 mph around the 2.5-mile oval. His speed initially broke the standing Menards Infiniti Pro Series mark set in 2003 by Ed Carpenter before driver Thiago Medeiros topped the speed charts at 189.274 mph. Solidly in the show, Drake is extremely pleased with the team's efforts. "Just to come here and get to drive around this racetrack, it's a dream come true for me," Drake said. "Even it it's just temporarily, you know, to come here and qualify for a race and have them say, 'It's a new track record,' that's something you dream about as a little boy, and you never really think it's going to happen in any form.
