Kommentaren ger först en kort översikt över musikalgenren och behandlar sedan översättningsarbetet, från källtext till måltext. I kommentaren beskriver jag min översättningsprincip, till vilken jag har använt mig av både Johan Franzons funktionella översättningsperspektiv (Franzon, 2009) och H. S. Drinkers principer (Drinker, 1950). Jag tar även upp de utmaningar och problem som jag stött på under översättningsarbetet och förklarar hur jag har löst dessa. Jag reflekterar också över hur musikallibrettots särskilda egenskaper har påverkat de val jag gjort i min översättning. Abstract This bachelor’s thesis consists of a translation of seven scenes from a musical libretto (Dear Evan Hansen by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek och Justin Paul) and a commentary of this translation. The commentary first provides a brief overview of the musical genre and proceeds to describe my translation, from source text to target text. The commentary describes my translation principle, which is inspired by the functional perspective of Johan Franzon (2009) as well as the principles of H. S. Drinker (1950). I also deal with the specific challenges encountered during the translation and describe how I handled them, as well as how the specific characteristics of the musical libretto has influenced my translation. Inledning 1.1 Uppsatsens form och syfte Denna uppsats består av två delar: en översättning av sju scener ur librettot till musikalen Dear Evan Hansen (2015) av Benj Pasek, Justin Paul (sångtext och musik) och Steven Levenson (libretto), samt en kommentar till översättningen. I kommentaren behandlas musikalöversättning som verksamhet och även de problem och utmaningar jag stött på under översättningsarbetet. Jag har valt att undersöka musikalöversättning av flera skäl. Dels vill jag fördjupa mina kunskaper inom området sångöversättning och vidare förstå vilka förutsättningar en översättare ställs inför vid ett uppdrag som består av just denna typ av multimodal text. Som utövande musikalartist är jag också nyfiken på att bättre förstå det samband som råder mellan sång, teater och musik ‒ något som är speciellt för just musikalgenren. Jag hoppas på att kunna dra nytta av de erfarenheter och kunskaper jag samlar på mig under detta arbete vid eventuella framtida musikalöversättningsuppdrag. 1.2 Disposition Jag inleder detta arbete med en inblick i musikalen som genre med kapitel 2, där jag kort presenterar konstformen och dess historia. I kapitel 3 presenterar jag min källtext och dess målgrupp samt min översättnings målgrupp. I kapitel 4 beskriver jag min övergripande översättningsprincip, och i kapitel 5 går jag över till att beskriva de översättningsproblem jag stött på under översättningsarbetet. Jag avslutar med kapitel 6, där jag sammanfattar arbetet samt diskuterar och analyserar mitt arbetssätt och mina resultat. 1 2. Musikal som genre Nationalencyklopedin definierar musikal som en ”musikteaterform som sammanfogar tal, sång och dans” (Musikal, Nationalencyklopedin, u.d.). Några utmärkande egenskaper hos musikalgenren är att repliker både talas och sjungs och att sång, dans och teater förekommer, ofta i kombination med varandra. Musikaler är därför nära besläktade med andra dramatiska genrer som teaterpjäser och operor, men har vissa egenskaper som skiljer dem åt. Musikaler kan sägas ha utvecklats ur operetter. Vanligt för musikaler är också att musiken går i ”populära tongångar” (Musikal, Nationalencyklopedin, u.d.). Speciellt för musikal- och dramatexter är att syftet är att texterna ska höras och inte läsas. Sådant som språkljud, rytm och antal ord spelar därför stor roll vid produktionen av librettot. 2.1 Kort om musikalgenrens historia Musikal som genre har funnits sedan sent 1800-tal och växte sedan fram under tidigt 1900-tal. Fram till 1920-talet var både musikal och operett populära musikteaterformer, men i samband med betydande verk som Lady be good (1924) och Teaterbåten (1927) fick musikalen övertaget. Musikaler har en tradition av samhällssatir och lättare underhållning, och flera av de tidiga verken innehöll just dessa två element (Musikal, Nationalencyklopedin, u.d.). Till skillnad från operor kan musikaler sägas ha ett större fokus på talad dialog (Tommasini, 2011). Tommasini (2011) beskriver denna skillnad på följande sätt: i opera är det främst musiken som driver verket, medan det i musikaler är orden som har högsta prioritet.
