Based on Saviano's book of the same name, the show premiered on Sky Atlantic in Italy on May 6, 2014, and runs for four seasons. The name of the show represents the name of the Neapolitan crime syndicate, Camorra. The 2008 film of the same name is loosely based on the same book, but is not related to the series. The fifth season will be the last. The show, mostly filmed in the Scampia district of Naples, tells the story of Ciro Di Marzio (Marco D'Amore), a member of the Savastano clan led by Pietro Savastano (Fortunato Serlino), a high- ranking member. Ciro seeks to navigate the dangers of the criminal world, as well as fight the brutal civil war. The Savastano family also consists of his wife Immacolata (Maria Pia Calzone) and son Gennaro (Salvatore Esposito). The show also features rival crime boss Salvatore Conte (Marco Palvetti), presenting characters Annalisa Magliocca (Christina Donadio), Patricia Santore (Christiana Dell'Anna), Giuseppe Avitabile (Gianfranco Gallo) and Enzo Sanguebl Villa (Arturo Muselli) in later seasons of the show. The series received critical acclaim for its characterization, tempo, atmosphere, acting, directing and writing. It also became a ratings hit for Sky, regularly showing up as one of the network's most popular cable shows. The series was sold in 190 countries. It originally aired in the United Kingdom on Sky Atlantic on 4 August 2014 and on SundanceTV in the United States on 24 August 2016. The spin-off of immortal, which is both a prequel and a sequel to the third season of the series, was released on December 5, 2019. [12] In Naples in the 2010s, the series follows Ciro Di Marzio, a member of the Savastano Camorra secondigliano clan, led by Pietro Savastano. When Pietro is arrested, an internal power struggle erupts with his rivals, as well as between the old guard of the clan and the young guard led by his son Gennaro Savastano. Ciro and Gennaro end up at odds with their families, and several alliances they make with various criminal groups as they move through the Neapolitan underworld. In particular, it focuses on the ways in which the series and some of its peculiar aspects – the decadent urban landscapes, the social context permeated by organised crime, the power of attraction exercised by male and female characters and the authenticity of the narration – have been received, and how they have contributed to convey specific images of Neapolitan identity associated, in some cases, with pervasive stereotypes and clichés. The contribution relies exclusively on the analysis of online documents (among which, in-depth articles that appeared in newspapers with a wide or sectorial circulation, including Der Spiegel and Die Zeit) in order to analyse the effects produced by the tv series Gomorrah (together with its iconic building, the Vele di Scampia), in disseminating distinct images of Neapolitanism and, ultimately, of Italianness through an exchange between local and global. Thesis Advisor: Gianni Cicali, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to analyze media representations of the Camorra, the organized crime syndicate in Naples and the region of Campania, Italy. How are the camorristi portrayed? Are they villains? Are they criminals who have a heart of gold? Do these representations glorify or celebrate these criminals? What is the relationship between the representations of Camorra in media and real-life camorristi ? In the tradition of Sandro Bernardi (citing the Lumière brothers, early cinematographers) and Guy Debord, I analyze the feedback loop that connects film, representation, and real life in regards to the Camorra in Naples. Filmmakers who choose to portray the Camorra on screen look to the Camorra in real life for inspiration. However, I contend that the camorristi in real life look to filmic representations for inspiration as well, creating a bidirectional relationship that feeds off of itself. Given this connection, how ‘responsible’ is it to portray camorristi on screen, especially when there is the risk of glorifying the criminal lifestyle? To accomplish this task, I first provide a brief history of the Camorra, focusing on issues relevant to the Camorra’s cinematic history, such as real estate speculation and drug trafficking.

Ho provato euforia, passione, felicità, ma anche frustrazione, stanchezza, paura. Non è stato un lavoro facile, ma alla fine penso si concluda tutto con una sola grande emozione: soddisfazione. Sono soddisfatta di aver portato a termine questo difficile e bellissimo percorso; sono soddisfatta di quello che sono riuscita a fare in questi tre anni; sono soddisfatta delle conoscenze che ho acquisito e che continuerò a custodire e approfondire. Spesso mi sono sentita demoralizzata, spaesata e sola di fronte ad alcune difficoltà che questo ambito di studi porta inevitabilmente con se, ma non mi sono arresa e questo lo devo anche e soprattutto alle persone che mi sono state accanto sempre e comunque. Tutto questo non sarebbe stato possibile senza la grande famiglia che ho alle spalle; una famiglia grande tanto di numero quanto di cuore. Voglio e devo ringraziare anche il mio ragazzo che mi ha sopportato durante le mie crisi isteriche e i mei sconforti, spesso dovuti al fatto che non credo mai fino in fondo in me stessa, e alla mia migliore amica con cui fin da piccola ho condiviso gioie, stupidaggini, dolori e con cui ho vissuto anche questa esperienza.
