MEDIA RELEASE: EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH TURNS TO TIME For Immediate Use, 8 March 2012 Photographer shows in new light

Everything You Touch Turns To Time, an exhibition by documentary and arts photographer Gary Cockburn, features iconic band The Triffids, in rehearsal and on stage for a number of their recent concerts held in celebration of David McComb’s wonderfully evocative songwriting. The show can be seen at Mojo’s Bar in North Fremantle from Sunday 25 March to Thursday 5 April.

The UK-born photographer spent several days with the band as they prepared for shows at ’s Hamer Hall in January 2009 and at the Queenscliff Music Festival in November 2011.

Cockburn says that the opportunity to document the Triffids’ reunions was one that he felt compelled to take. “The Triffids’ music has been central to my understanding of what it is Turns To Time To Turns to be Australian for far longer than I’ve been Australian. It wasn’t just that McComb wrote

such great songs; they seemed to be able to summon up, at will, an image of the continent that you could see, smell, taste and feel.

s “As a photographer I delight in showing things that might otherwise go unseen, in capturing the moment. I hope that these photos can be seen not only as a celebration of the band and its work, but as some level of insight into the band and the guests they invited along.”

The guest musicians at the shows that Cockburn photographed included , , Simon Breed, , Mark Snarski, , Oh Mercy, Melanie Oxley, Mark C Halstead, Bruce Haymes and Ricky Maymi.

Adrian Hoffman, who himself played with The Triffids during the Perth Festival in February 2009, will perform with Chloe McGrath at the opening of the exhibition. Hoffman and McGrath, both of acclaimed Perth band The Morning Night, will present a number of Triffids songs along with some of their own material.

Everything You Touch Turns To Time is part of the FotoFreo Fringe (more formally known as the City of Fremantle Festival of Photography Open Exhibition Programme). Cockburn’s other exhibition at FotoFreo also explores capturing the moment, albeit in a completely different way. Roads By Night, Lanes By Light juxtaposes shots of night-time traffic on main roads in urban with the seeming serenity of country by-ways in England’s Lake District. The exhibition takes its name from a Triffids song, first released on the b-side of the ten-inch single, Trick Of The Light.

In a previous incarnation Mojo’s Bar was known as The Stoned Crow, and as such was the venue at which The Triffids played four of their first five paying gigs. Everything You Touch You Everything
