Vagabond Holes: David McComb & The Triffids by Chris Coughran, Niall Lucy · The Triffids were never labeled as a Christian band, but there's an undeniably spiritual feel to several of the songs on Calenture. Moreover, vocalist David McComb spews his words with the fiery passion of a backwoods preacher. The orchestral sweep of "Bury Me Deep in Love" recalls the Waterboys ' expansive sound; the lyrics are unmistakably religious as McComb looks for salvation in a chapel. Fans Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids Nick Cave will immediately be seduced by McComb 's bluesy croon; deep and brimming with palpable sorrow, McComb 's voice never dwindles in intensity. McComb 's explosive rage at the finale of "Vagabond Holes" should have been the Triffids' last gasp, an unsettling blast of scarred emotions that isn't easy to shake off. Vagabond Holes: David McComb & The Triffids : Chris Coughran : Niall Lucy 11 November - 5 June was an Australian writer and scholar best known for his work in deconstruction. He worked mainly in the fields of deconstruction, literary theory and cultural criticism. His latter work much of it collaborative brought a deconstructive approach to contemporary Australian events and figures. In Postmodern Literary Theory: An IntroductionLucy identifies postmodernism as a continuation albeit not by conscious or deliberate means of romanticismespecially in the form of ideas associated with the Jena romantics in Germany in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. Lucy argues that postmodernism should be distinguished from poststructuralismand especially from deconstruction as associated with the work of Jacques Derrida. Lucy's work is notable for its sense of humour, and for taking popular culture no less seriously than philosophy. The Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids tendency in his later work towards a philosophical engagement with contemporary events is strongly informed by Derrida's Specters of Marx and the idea of democracy-to-come, which is the linchpin of Lucy's account of the importance of deconstruction in A Derrida Dictionary Much of Lucy's recent work has been collaborative, and directly concerned with contemporary Australian Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids events and figures. Among other recent works, Lucy's co-edited collection with Chris CoughranVagabond Holesis a tribute to his late friend, David McComblead singer and songwriter for Australian rock band The Triffidswhich defies the conventions of a rock biography in its deconstruction of the notion of an autonomous self or identity. Ranging across diverse topics, and working in multiple styles, the book offers a further elaboration of Lucy's work on democracy-to-come. Niall's final book, A Dictionary of Postmodernism will be published posthumously by Wiley-Blackwell in Lucy has been lauded internationally for his work in deconstruction. Lucy's work is widely cited across many disciplines and in several languages. Among those who refer to his work are John D. Lucy wrote liner notes for the re-issue of The Triffids album Calenture [21] and for the retrospective collection, Crossing Off the Milesby Australian rock Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids Chad's Tree. Lucy served as a member of the consultancy board of Derrida Today [23] and a member of the editorial board of Fibreculture Journal. Lucy was a committed member and supporter of the Fremantle Football Club. Niall Lucy died at his home in Fremantle in June11 months after being diagnosed Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids cancer. There have been many tributes in response to Lucy's death throughout the international scholarly community. Robert Briggs. Briggs' piece appears in the last issue of the journal Lucy edited. Lucy was presented with a posthumous Certificate of Recognition by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for his contributions across 20 years to the English and Literature course and examination materials in Western Australia. In Decembera concert celebrating Lucy's life was also held with guest Australian musicians, including Martyn P. • An Answer to the Question, What Is Postmodernism? by Niall Lucy & Steve Mickler
2/18/2016 TRANSFORMATIONS Journal of Media & Culture ISSN 14443775 2008 Issue No. 16 — Democracy Under Fire The War on English: An Answer to the Question, What is Postmodernism? By Niall Lucy & Steve Mickler This paper derives from our keynote address to the NSW English Teachers’ Association Conference (“Licence to Thrill”) in Sydney, December 2007. It is intended as an evidence-based rejoinder to widespread attacks on the alleged parlous state of secondary-school English in Australia today, where the problem seems to be that English has been taken over by “postmodernism.” In this way postmodernism is seen as the general or foundational problem, and so it follows that “postmodern” English must be a problem too. Our first task, then, is to decide what “postmodernism” means, according to its detractors. What are its alleged key features? This question occupies the initial section of the paper, which includes a series of counter arguments in response to what postmodernism is supposed to be guilty of “undermining” or “destroying.” In section two we move to a discussion of particular problems associated with so-called “postmodern” English, before focusing (in section three) on the widely reported views of a strident adversary of contemporary English studies: Kevin Donnelly. Our comments here are confined to a discussion of Donnelly’s most recent book, Dumbing Down (2007), which we take for a mature and considered expression of his approach to education. We conclude by way of pondering the question, whose interests are served by attacking postmodernism? 1. Postmodernism 1.1 Postmodernism is denounced for consisting (allegedly) of five broad features, all of which are meant to be equally damning: postmodernism holds there to be no such thing as truth postmodernism equals moral relativism postmodernism is leftist postmodernism is anti-liberal postmodernism holds there to be no such thing as history.

  • Marriageability and Indigenous Representation in the White Mainstream Media in Australia
Marriageability and Indigenous Representation in the White Mainstream Media in Australia PhD Thesis 2007 Andrew King BA (Hons) Supervisor: Associate Professor Alan McKee Creative Industries, Queensland University of Technology Abstract By means of a historical analysis of representations, this thesis argues that an increasing sexualisation of Indigenous personalities in popular culture contributes to the reconciliation of non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australia. It considers how sexualised images and narratives of Indigenous people, as they are produced across a range of film, television, advertising, sport and pornographic texts, are connected to a broader politics of liberty and justice in the present postmodern and postcolonial context. By addressing this objective the thesis will identify and evaluate the significance of ‘banal’ or everyday representations of Aboriginal sexuality, which may range from advertising images of kissing, television soap episodes of weddings, sultry film romances through to more evocatively oiled-up representations of the pin- up-calendar variety. This project seeks to explore how such images offer possibilities for creating informal narratives of reconciliation, and engendering understandings of Aboriginality in the media beyond predominant academic concerns for exceptional or fatalistic versions. i Keywords Aboriginality Indigenous Marriageability Reconciliation Popular Culture Sexuality Relationships Interracial Public Sphere Mediasphere Celebrity ii Table of Contents Introduction ………………………………………………………………………….

  • David Mccomb Was a Conscious Craftsman and a Scintillating Thinker About His Craft
214 S PATIAL R ELATIONS a only you can hear. With “Good Evening Dear Miss Alach,” the book finishes in a very different register from the rest. It is self-referencing regarding the foulness (I use the antiquated term) of the music industry, snobbishness, false values. A goodbye with irony writ large. Its modest proposal eats us all. It is an epilogue. In this journey through his poetry, I hope to have shown that David McComb was a conscious craftsman and a scintillating thinker about his craft. It was no mere utilitarian device of expression and opinion for him, but some- thing of his body, of the place he came from and where he went. Poetry was necessity. It was a survival kit that kept him searching for reason, for purpose, for a logic in a traumatized but also compelling world. Beauty never faded, even if it struggled for expression. Love was about separation and loss as well as about having and possession. Irony was the safety-net that always gave way when the poet went out on the tightrope. Furthermore, McComb was an ecologist of body and land, and wrote against invasiveness in all its forms. Sometimes he had to deal with that invasiveness and come up with whatever ‘escapes’ he could manage. He was a poet of total liminality. David McComb: Beautiful Waste107 INCE THE BROADER RECOGNITION of Born Sandy Devotional (re- corded 1985, released 1986) as one of the great Australian music S albums, there has been a pleasing ‘growth’ in publications relating to definitively West Australian band The Triffids (named, of course, after the John Wyndham novel) and their singer–songwriter Dave McComb.

This book contains the complete text of the hardcover edition. Spelling is British and mistakes by publisher are left in. HAILED AS THE GREATEST SCIENCE-FICTION MASTERPIECE OF OUR TIME The Day of The Triffids by John Wyndham THE END BEGINS When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off by sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere. I felt that from the moment I woke. And yet, when I started functioning a little more smartly, I became doubtful. After all, the odds were that it was I who was wrong, and not everyone else-though I did not see how that could be. I went on waiting, tinged with doubt. But presently I had my first bit of objective evidence-a distant clock stuck what sounded to me just like eight. I listened hard and suspiciously. Soon another clock began, on a hard, decisive note. In a leisurely fashion it gave an indisputable eight. Then I knew things were awry. The way I came to miss the end of the world-well, the end of the world I had known for close on thirty years-was sheer accident: like a lot of survival, when you come to think of it. In the nature of things a good many somebodies are always in hospital, and the law of averages had picked on me to be one of them a week or so before. It might just as easily have been the week before that-in which case I'd not be writing now: I'd not be here at all.

These lyrics tend to reproduce the dominant myths about the city, that it is isolated, that it is self-satisfied, that little happens there. Perth became the focus of song lyrics during the late 1970s time of punk with titles such as ‘Arsehole Of The Universe’ and ‘Perth Is A Culture Shock.’ Even the Eurogliders’ 1984 hit, ‘Heaven Must Be There,’ is based on a rejection of life in Perth. However, Perth was also home to Dave Warner whose songs in the 1970s and early 1980s offered vignettes, which is itself a title of one of Warner’s tracks, of the youthful, male suburban experience. The essay goes on to examine songs by the Triffids, Bob Evans, Sleepy Township and the Panda Band. Keywords: Perth; songs; music; place; isolation; lyrics Myths of the City Every city has its myths.

UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING AMERICAN HERITAGE CENTER GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RESOURCES Child actress Mary Jane Irving with Bessie Barriscale and Ben Alexander in the 1918 silent film Heart of Rachel. Mary Jane Irving papers, American Heritage Center. Compiled by D. Claudia Thompson and Shaun A. Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.
