Abstract: An extensive study of the group of Lactarius theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF revealed that within this complex a new species could be defined: Lucturiux oedohyphosus. This species can be distin- guished from both L. theiogalus and L. lacunarum by the structure of pileipellis and stipitipellis, and spore ornamentation. In the field it differs from L. theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF by the non-wrinkled, reddish brown pileus. and a poorly to slowly yellowing latex. An attempt is also made to clarify the nomenclatorical confusion surrounding the epitheton theiogalus. It is shown that Agaricus theiogalus in its original sense represents Lactarius chrysorrheus and cannot be used in the current concept of Lacta- rius theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF. Lactarius tuhidus is accepted here as the correct name for Lactarius theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF and follows the current interpretation of this name by various contemporary authors. The fact that the original diagnosis could also be interpreted as describing Lactarius omphali- formis, L. obscurants and possibly also L oedohyphosus, is discussed. -

Valle (2010): Mycorrhizal macrofungi diversity (Agaricomycetes) from Mediterranean Quercus forests; a compilation for the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). - Nova Hedwigia 91: 1–31. Abstract: A compilation study has been made of the mycorrhizal Agaricomycetes from several sclerophyllous and deciduous Mediterranean Quercus woodlands from Iberian Peninsula. Firstly, we selected eight Mediterranean taxa of the genus Quercus, which were well sampled in terms of macrofungi. Afterwards, we performed a database containing a large amount of data about mycorrhizal biota of Quercus. We have defined and/or used a series of indexes (occurrence, affinity, proportionality, heterogeneity, similarity, and taxonomic diversity) in order to establish the differences between the mycorrhizal biota of the selected woodlands. The 605 taxa compiled here represent an important amount of the total mycorrhizal diversity from all the vegetation types of the studied area, estimated at 1,500–1,600 taxa, with Q. ilex subsp. ballota (416 taxa) and Q. suber (411) being the richest. We also analysed their quantitative and qualitative mycorrhizal flora and their relative richness in different ways: woodland types, substrates and species composition. The results highlight the large amount of mycorrhizal macrofungi species occurring in these mediterranean Quercus woodlands, the data are comparable with other woodland types, thought to be the richest forest types in the world. -

A hypogeous gasteroid species, Lactarius sulphosmus sp. nov. and an agaricoid species, Russula vinosobrunneola sp. nov. are introduced. The latter is morphologically distinguished from R. sichuanensis, although the ITS-based phylogeny was unable to distinguish them. Therefore, a multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of the nLSU, ITS, mtSSU, and tef-1α gene sequences of Russula subsection Laricinae was carried out, which supports the assertion that they are different species. Fr., R. heterophylla (Fr.) Fr., R. virescens (Schaeff.) Fr., Lactarius sanguifluus (Paulet) Fr., L. deliciosus (L.) Gray and Lactifluus piperatus (L.) Kuntze were selected for nutritional and nutraceutical evaluation. Their complete nutritional profile with respect to per cent occurrence of protein, carbohydrate, fat, ash, free sugars and energy values present were evaluated. For neutraceutical evaluation, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, ascorbic acid and â carotenoids were evaluated. To evaluate antioxidant activity, reducing power assay was conducted. Nutritional analysis confirmed the presence of good amounts of protein which ranged from 19.84- 37.77%, sufficient carbohydrate content that ranges from 40.81-63.24%, low fat content that ranges from 1.7-5.44%, good ash content ranging from 6.17-16.43 %, moisture 6.89-8.34 % and energy value 253.84- 287.40 Kcal/ 100g of the sample. Mannitol and trehalose occur as the main sugars in all the mushrooms evaluated. Amongst the neutraceutical components phenolic content ranged from 1.78-17.55 mg/g, flavonoid content ranged from 0.14-2.47 mg/g, ascorbic acid content ranged from 0.12-0.31 mg/g, â carotene content ranged from 4.47-32.73µg/g and the reducing power of mushroom methanolic extract was found to range between 0.06-0.77. -

DESCRIPTIONS OF LACTARIUS SPECIES COMMON TO NORTHEAST NA By Dianna Smith Lactarius affinis Peck Sticky to viscid, smooth, convex dull ochre-yellow to yellow-brown cap, slightly paler margin., and depressed disc. Off-white to cream gills. Close, subdecurrent, often forked near stem apex. Latex white, not staining or changing color. White spore print. Fruits in summer and fall. In hardwood and coniferous forests. Acrid taste. Not poisonous, but not edible. Lactarius argillaceifolius (Hessler & Smith) Drab medium to large lilac-brown to lilac-tan smooth, sticky to dry cap with depressed disc, and inrolled margin becoming pinkish-tan in the center. It has close, broad cream subdecurrent gills that age pinkish tan toward the margin. Off-white latex discolors flesh tan to grayish-brown. Spore print is pinkish-buff. Pale stem develops brown spots with handling. Slightly acrid taste. Edibility unknown. Mycorrhizal with hardwood, especially oak. Common in oak-hickory woods summer and autumn. Lactarius aspideoides (Burl.) Pale sulphur-yellow glutinous firm cap with depressed center and inrolled margin that becomes funnel- shaped with maturity and bears differently hued yellow concentric zones. Gills are close, broadly attached to sticky yellow stem, off-white to cream becoming yellow-spotted. Voluminous white latex that stains flesh lilac. White to pale yellow spore print. Fruits in summer and autumn in hardwood and in coniferous forests. 'Aspideoides' means 'shield-like'. Bitter- tasting. Lactarius atroviridus (Peck) Medium to large olive-greenish-brown with a blackish sticky center and rugose and somewhat scurfy zoned cap. Initially convex with an inrolled margin becoming flat and centrally depressed with maturity. -

Taxonomic and nomenclatural notes on some taxa of Hygrocybe Eef Arnolds Taxonomic status and nomenclature of several European taxa ofHygrocybe are discussed. It is argued why some new combinations, made in a previous paper (Arnolds, 1985b) were proposed. Three new taxa are described to replace incorrect names: Hygrocybe cystidiata Arnolds (= H. obrussea sensu Kühner), H. lepida Arnolds (= H. cantharellus sensu auct.) and H. conica var. conicopalus- tris (R. Haller ex) Arnolds (= H. conicopalustris R. Haller, nom. inval.). Three new combinations are proposed: Hygrocybe miniata (Fr.: Fr.) Kumm. var. mollis (B. & Br.) Arnolds, H. virginea (Wulf.: Fr.) Additionally, mycorrhizal fungi provide both a physical barrier to pathogens and initiate gene expression to aid in responses to be biotic and abiotic stresses. In ecosystems, mycorrhizal fungi contribute to nutrient cycling and may possess novel enzymes for the breakdown of a wide array of natural and synthetic chemicals. The goal of this sequencing initiative is to identify and compare genome determinants shaping evolution across the disparate fungal taxa in symbiosis with plants. Sequencing mycorrhizal fungal genomes will contribute to, which includes but is not limited to, the better understanding of interactions with host-trees; the basis for understanding phenotypic differences in fruit body structure and development; the description and understanding of organic secondary metabolites typical of antibiotics and volatile compounds; the comparative genomics of additional fungal parasites and saprobes; and the development of molecular markers to be used for the tractability of fungi in various environments.
