The Wisconsin State Honors 2003-2004 WSMA Middle Level Music Project State Honors Important Dates The Wisconsin State Honors Music Project is sponsored Monday, February 2, 2004 by the Wisconsin School Music Association. The Middle Level State Honors Applications Due Honors Project began in 1967 to provide musically talented high school youth the opportunity to Middle Level State Honors Auditions rehearse and perform with the nation’s finest conduc- tors in a professional setting. In 1995, WSMA proudly Friday, April 2, 2004 sponsored the first-ever Middle Level State Honors 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Band. A WSMA Middle Level State Honors Choir was Dousman Kettle Moraine Middle School added in 1996, and in 1997, the WSMA Middle Level LaCrosse Linclon Middle School State Honors Orchestra made its debut performance. Wausau John Muir Middle School Students in grades 6–8 who attend WSMA-member Saturday, April 12, 2004 schools are eligible to audition for the WSMA Middle 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Level State Honors Music Project. Auditions include an individual performance and an Ensemble Class taught Eau Claire DeLong Middle School by the adjudicator. This year, more than 1300 students Kaukauna River View Middle School applied for the privilege of being one of the 305 Whitewater Middle School students who are members of the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Choir, Orchestra, and Band. Oct. 27–30, 2004 Music teachers, parents, administrators, and the WMEA State Music Conference. Middle Level State WSMA staff contribute time, talent, motivation, and Honors Concert will be Saturday, October 30 at encouragement for every student involved in the 1:00 p.m. in Madison. 3 2003 WSMA Middle Level State Honors  Choir

Juan Tony Guzmán, Conductor

Arranger, conductor, and music educator from the Dominican Republic, Juan Tony Guzmán is currently director of the jazz program and assistant professor of music education at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He has written many choral arrange- ments of Caribbean and Latin American traditional music; some of them published by Boosey & Hawkes in the Latin Accents series. During the past 24 years he has conducted choirs, bands, and orchestras in North America, Europe, Central and South America. He served as consultant for the design and implementation of the nationwide music education curriculum in the Dominican Republic. Guzmán holds a doctorate in music education from Florida State University and a degree in electromechanical engineering from the Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Guzmán received a bachelor’s degree from Luther College, and a master’s degree from Florida State University in music education. While attending Florida State, he also received an associate degree in pedagogy of music theory. He frequently serves as a guest conductor and clinician.

Dorothy Straub, Conductor

Dorothy A. Straub is recently retired as K-12 Music Coordinator in the Fairfield, Connecticut Public Schools, where she also taught strings and orchestra. In this position she established an orchestra program which now has more than 1,300 string players, and orchestras in every school. Her teaching experience includes elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as private violin and viola instruction. Straub is Assistant Music Director of the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras and conducts its Concert Orchestra. She is also a violist in the Greenwich Symphony and the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra. She has had two compositions for string orchestra published by Boosey & Hawkes and is editor of two string books published by Carl Fischer, Inc. Straub is past president of MENC: The National Association for Music Education and of the MENC Eastern Division. In addition, she has served in several capacities for the Connecticut Music Educators Association, including president. Currently, she sits on the Board of Directors of the Midwest Clinic, an International Band and Orchestra Conference. A graduate of Indiana University, Straub earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music education, specializing in strings. She also holds a professional diploma in educational administration from Fairfield University. In 1995 she was awarded the ASTA Citation for Exceptional Leadership and Merit and the NSOA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lynn Hansen, Conductor

Lynn A. Hansen is a principal at West Junior High School, in Traverse City, Michigan. She has 24 years of experience as a band conductor, primarily directing the activities of West Junior High’s four concert bands, jazz band, marching band and pep band. She also served as conductor of the Second Time Arounders Marching Band for the National Cherry Festival. Active as a guest conductor/lecturer, Hansen has given presentations to music educa- tion student teachers at the University of Michigan, the Midwest Conference, and has conducted honors bands in Michigan. Her articles on non-competitive instrumental music programs and thematic-integrated-interdisciplinary music curricula have been published nationally. She has been on the faculty of Northwestern Michigan College, the National Music Camp, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, East Texas State University Band Camp, the University of Michigan All-State at Interlochen program, and Iron County Band Camp (Mich.). Hansen has received the Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Award, and the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. Hansen continues to perform as Principal Oboe and English Horn in the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, with area churches and ensembles, and as a member of two woodwind quintets. She attended the University of Michigan where she received bachelor’s and master’s of music degrees, and Central Michigan University where she received a master of arts degree in school administration.
