NucLear D iscourse ancI Its D iscontents, or, ApocAlypsE Now or Never Jean BEThkE ElskrAiN Human beings think most often in images; a terrible or delightful picture comes into our minds and then we seek to find words to express it, to capture it, to make it somehow manageable. Thus it is with the possibility of nuclear war. Our images are fixed. The scenes of utter destruction at Hiroshima and Nagasaki; two cities laid waste; people disappeared, remaining as shadows on cement or persisting in a terrible and painful twilight zone of lingering death from radiation. Or, even years later, moving through the world carrying within them a perceived taint, a threat to themselves and others: “I am one who has been touched in the most frightening way by the most horrible sort of weapon.” I taught a class at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst for five years called “Issues of War and Peace in a Nuclear Age.” Inevitably, we would arrive at the section of the course that required a discussion of the dropping of the atomic bombs in World War 2. -
King of Kings (Matthew 2)
washington,wa s h i n g t o n , dcd c KING OF KINGS Epiphany 2019 Matthew 2:1-12 Dan Claire The story of the Wise Men is the sequel to Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus, and it begins with two important details that weren’t mentioned in chapter one: namely, the place and the time. Matthew writes: “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem.” (2:1) The place and the time of a story usually aren’t all that exciting, but if it’s a good story, these details are often essential for understanding what the story is all about. That’s certainly the case in Matthew’s story. The place where Jesus was born, Matthew tells us, was Bethlehem–not Jerusalem. Isn’t it odd that Matthew didn’t mention this earlier, when he told the story of Jesus' birth? Matthew was saving this detail until now, until the story of the Wise Men. Most people would have expected the new king to be born in the royal palace in Jerusalem, ~5 miles to the north, and that’s exactly where the Wise Men looked first. They arrived and asked, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (2:2) But Jesus wasn’t there. He was in the City of David, in Bethlehem and not in Jerusalem. -

[email protected] Abstract: The digital revolution that began in the twentieth century and continues today has profound and surprising implications for the role of the humanities in higher education. Three prominent characteristics of the twenty-first century — ubiquitous technology, global interaction, and relentless change — require a new approach to the education that fosters technological expertise, communication across boundaries of language and culture, and creative response to new challenges and opportunities. This situation creates new opportunities for a revitalized role of the humanities in education that combines critical with creative thought and emphasizes communication in a world connected by interactive technology. Literary translation can be a key contributor to the development and implementation of a humanities curriculum for the modern world designed to educate technologically sophisticated, innovative “citizens of the world.” This paper has two sections. The first section sets a conceptual framework; the second suggests ways to apply translation to achieve this 1 goal: both employing translation in a traditional manner and attempting to expand its meaning and implications. Popular Music (2017) Volume 36/2. © Cambridge University Press 2017, pp. 157–177 doi:10.1017/S0261143017000113 Iran’s daughter and mother Iran: Googoosh and diasporic nostalgia for the Pahlavi modern FARZANEH HEMMASI University of Toronto Faculty of Music, 80 Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2C5, Canada E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article examines Googoosh, the reigning diva of Persian popular music, through an evaluation of diasporic Iranian discourse and artistic productions linking the vocalist to a feminized nation, its ‘victimisation’ in the revolution, and an attendant ‘nostalgia for the modern’ (Özyürek 2006) of pre-revolutionary Iran. Following analyses of diasporic media that project national drama and desire onto her persona, I then demonstrate how, since her departure from Iran in 2000, Googoosh has embraced her national metaphorization and produced new works that build on historical tropes link- ing nation, the erotic, and motherhood while capitalising on the nostalgia that surrounds her. A well-preserved blonde in her late fifties wearing a silvery-blue, décolletage-revealing dress looks deeply into the camera lens. A synthesised string section swells in the back- ground. Her carefully groomed brows furrow with pained emotion, her outstretched arms convey an exhausted supplication, and her voice almost breaks as she sings: Do not forget me I know that I am ruined You are hearing my cries IamIran,IamIran1 Since the 1979 establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iranian law has dictated that all women within the country’s borders must be veiled; women must also refrain from singing in public except under circumscribed conditions. -

The Asia 21 Young Leaders Initiative, established by the Asia Society with support from Founding International Sponsor Bank of America Merrill Lynch, is the pre- eminent leadership development program in the Asia-Pacific region for emerging leaders under the age of 40. Representing a broad range of sectors, the Fellows will come together three times during their Fellowship year to address topics relating to environmental degradation, economic development, poverty eradication, universal education, conflict resolution, HIV/AIDS and public health crises, human rights, and other issues. They will meet twice at the Asia 21 Young Leaders Forum, and once at the Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit, set to be held in late 2010. The first meeting of the 2010-2011 Class will be held in Florida from February 28 to March 3, 2010 where they will participate in a series of meetings designed to generate creative, shared approaches to leadership and problem solving and develop collaborative public service projects. The Class includes an Iranian journalist and filmmaker whose detention after last year’s Iranian elections led to a major international campaign for his release, one of the leading environmental lawyers in China, and an astronaut trainer. -

Faranak in the Shahnameh; the Woman with Three Faces Shokoufeh Taghi Introduction In the religions of the ancient world, especially those of Mesopotamian origin, gods of both genders worked in a familial way together to create a balanced and harmonious world.1 What was seen in the house of gods reflected what was going on in the society. The rules of religion could mirror the rules of the agricultural states of Sumer, where the weather was not hostile, the soil and the animals were fertile, food was accessible, and people did not need to kill each other in order to survive.
