Rocznik Komparatystyczny – Comparative Yearbook – Komparatistisches Jahrbuch 7 (2016) DOI: 10.18276/rk.2016.7-16 Ursula Phillips UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) With Open Eyes: The Young Narcyza Żmichowska’s Reception of Western Cultural Influences Narcyza Żmichowska (1819–1876) is not a name instantly recognizable outside Poland. In the English-speaking world, however, she is not unknown thanks to research on women’s history, where she is usually discussed in connection with the group of women with whom she was associated in the 1840s known as the Enthu- siasts (Fraisse and Perrot, 1993: 485). It is thanks to the appearance of Grażyna Borkowska’s book in English (2001) that her achievements as a literary author have become better known among Slavists and women’s literature researchers outside Poland. An English translation of Żmichowska’s best known novel Poganka (The Heathen) appeared in 2012 with a substantial introduction placing the work in both its Polish and European contemporary contexts (Żmichowska, 2012). Recently, this novel has featured alongside works by Charlotte Brontë, Daphne du Maurier and others, in a PhD dissertation inspired by psychoanalytic theories of femininity and mirroring, thereby proving her potential for comparative analysis (Naszkowska, 2012). The aim of the current article is to discuss this non-Polish context, and how foreign inspirations made their way into Żmichowska’s work and thinking. Like many other Polish cultural figures, Żmichowska maintained a close con- nection with France, although she never became an émigrée. Her literary activity is a testament nonetheless to how, despite spending more or less her whole life in the partitioned Polish lands, mostly in the Russian partition but also in the 1840s in the Poznań region of the Prussian, she was able to keep abreast of philosophical, political and literary developments in France and Germany and, in the latter part of her life, in Britain, North America, Italy and Scandinavia. -

Thus it is with the possibility of nuclear war. Our images are fixed. The scenes of utter destruction at Hiroshima and Nagasaki; two cities laid waste; people disappeared, remaining as shadows on cement or persisting in a terrible and painful twilight zone of lingering death from radiation. Or, even years later, moving through the world carrying within them a perceived taint, a threat to themselves and others: “I am one who has been touched in the most frightening way by the most horrible sort of weapon.” I taught a class at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst for five years called “Issues of War and Peace in a Nuclear Age.” Inevitably, we would arrive at the section of the course that required a discussion of the dropping of the atomic bombs in World War 2. -

(She actually became a British agent months before the Special Operations Executive was founded in July 1940.) Binney credits Skarbek's resourcefulness and success with influencing the espionage-and-subversion organization's policy of recruiting increasing numbers of women.1 I first heard substantial accounts of Skarbek in the latter 1990s, from my father, Jozef Kasparek (1915-2002). -

[email protected] Abstract: The digital revolution that began in the twentieth century and continues today has profound and surprising implications for the role of the humanities in higher education. Three prominent characteristics of the twenty-first century — ubiquitous technology, global interaction, and relentless change — require a new approach to the education that fosters technological expertise, communication across boundaries of language and culture, and creative response to new challenges and opportunities. This situation creates new opportunities for a revitalized role of the humanities in education that combines critical with creative thought and emphasizes communication in a world connected by interactive technology. Literary translation can be a key contributor to the development and implementation of a humanities curriculum for the modern world designed to educate technologically sophisticated, innovative “citizens of the world.” This paper has two sections. The first section sets a conceptual framework; the second suggests ways to apply translation to achieve this 1 goal: both employing translation in a traditional manner and attempting to expand its meaning and implications. ISBN 978-83-932380-8-8 Foreword In 1939, the Republic of Poland was attacked by Germany (supported by Slovakia) and the Soviet Union. Although France and the UK declared war on Germany, they did not pursue any activities to provide their Polish ally with any real assistance. Despite its total defeat and its entire territory being occupied, Poland did not surrender. Escaping to France and then to the UK, the authorities of the Republic of Poland demonstrated legalism and maintained the continuity of the Polish state. Poland as a state continued to be an actor of international law, and within the Allied bloc, it was the legal representative of all the citizens of the Republic of Poland – regardless of their nationality, religion or political views. -

Andrzej Kopacki Laudatory Speech for Martin Pollack Good evening, Martin. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Just what does it mean to be a translator? That’s a tricky question and one that has become suspiciously relevant these days. I say “suspiciously relevant” because passing fads and short-lived cultural trends are dodgy by definition. Literary translation has become fashionable. It’s a staple focus of conferences and seminars, symposiums and workshops nowadays. The good old translator, once the wallflower in the ballroom of literature, has suddenly been asked to dance. But the music is not very pleasant because the orchestra seems to be playing—literally—out of tune. It does not seem to know the score, but only abstract concepts hatched in the theory of translation, cultural studies and linguistics. These abstract concepts are apparently needed for the “transcultural” world to reflect on its own globality. Passing fads should not be overestimated; between one ballroom and another, the translator puts on the overalls of a pipefitter of literary works. Things are supposed to be fast and neat. The payment will be made according to the rate set by the works dealer. The name of the man or woman in the overalls, with a black case full of nuts and bolts, seems unimportant. There is no space for it on the website. The face? Who remembers the face of a pipefitter? Yet translators have always been with us. Let’s face it: the vast majority of literary works would have never been known to us had it not been for translators. -

Jenna Davis 1 Beyond Castration: Recognizing Female Desire and Subjectivity in the Oedipus Complex Je=aDavis Critical Theory Swathmore College December 2011 Jenna Davis 2 CHAPTER 1 Argument and Methodology Psychoanalysis was developed by Austrian physician Sigmund Freud in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. One of Freud's most celebrated theories was that of the Oedipus complex, which explores the psychic structures that underlie sexual development. In the following chapters I will be examining the Oedipal and preoedipal stages of psychosexual development, drawing out their implicit gendered assumptions with the help of modern feminist theorists and psychoanalysts. I am pursuing a Lacanian reading of Freud, in which the biological roles of mother and father are given structural importance, so that whomever actually occupies these roles is less important than their positional significance. After giving a brief history of the evolution of psychoanalytic theory in the first chapter, I move on in the second chapter to explicate Freud's conception of the Oedipus complex (including the preoedipal stage) and the role of the Oedipal myth, making use of theorist Teresa de Lauretis. In the third chapter, I look at several of Freud's texts on femininity and female sexuality. I will employ Simone de Beauvoir, Kaja Silverman and de Lauretis to discuss male and female investments in femininity and the identities that are open to women. After this, Jessica Benjamin takes the focus away from individuals and incorporates the other in her theory of intersubjectivity. I end chapter three with Helene Cixous, Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray, who all attest to the necessity of symbolic female representation--Cixous proposes a specifically female manner of writing called ecriture feminine, Kristeva introduces the semiotic realm to contend with Lacan's symbolic realm, and Irigaray believes in the need for corporeal Jenna Davis 3 representation for women within a female economy. -
The Grunwald Trail
n the Grunwald fi elds thousands of soldiers stand opposite each other. Hidden below the protec- tive shield of their armour, under AN INVITATION Obanners waving in the wind, they hold for an excursion along long lances. Horses impatiently tear their bridles and rattle their hooves. Soon the the Grunwald Trail iron regiments will pounce at each other, to clash in a deadly battle And so it hap- pens every year, at the same site knights from almost the whole of Europe meet, reconstructing events which happened over six hundred years ago. It is here, on the fi elds between Grunwald, Stębark and Łodwigowo, where one of the biggest battles of Medieval Europe took place on July . The Polish and Lithuanian- Russian army, led by king Władysław Jagiełło, crushed the forces of the Teutonic Knights. On the battlefi eld, knights of the order were killed, together with their chief – the great Master Ulrich von Jungingen. The Battle of Grunwald, a triumph of Polish and Lithuanian weapons, had become the symbol of power of the common monarchy. When fortune abandoned Poland and the country was torn apart by the invaders, reminiscence of the battle became the inspiration for generations remembering the past glory and the fi ght for national independence. Even now this date is known to almost every Pole, and the annual re- enactment of the battle enjoys great popularity and attracts thousands of spectators. In Stębark not only the museum and the battlefi eld are worth visiting but it is also worthwhile heading towards other places related to the great battle with the Teutonic Knights order. -

Ifwe rethink the problem of a specificity of women's cinema and aesthetic forms in this manner, in terms of address- who is making films for whom, who is looking and speaking, how, where, and to whom--then what has been seen as a rift, a division, an ideological split within feminist film culture between theory and practice, or between formalism and activism, may appear to be the very strength, the drive and productive heterogeneity of feminism. 1 It's difficult to believe that after over 30 years of feminist theory "breaking the glass ceiling" is still a term often heard from women professionals. Still, while women continue to make up a trifling percentage of CEOs in Fortune 500 companies, and are continually paid 72% of the wages of their male counterparts,2 small advances continue to be made by women in both these areas? Yet, one profession that stands out as persistently keeping women on the outside looking in is mainstream filmmaking, especially directing. -
