Innleiing Åke Sandström har i fleire år arbeidd med å etablera eit bilete av den mari- tim-historiske overgangen frå padling til roing i Norden. Med doktorav- handlinga si, ein monografi, frå 2015 har han nådd målet. Sandström skriv innom det vi kunne kalla eit tradisjonelt historisk-filo- logisk paradigme med omsyn til for eksempel avhandlingsform, metode, dataetablering og analyse. Denne typen avhandlingsprosjekt er no på veg ut av humaniora, der den har stått sterkt i generasjonar. Vi har no fått andre avhandlingstypar og nye krav til teorigrunnlag, me- todeval, korpusetablering, analyseformer og generaliseringar enn dei som særkjenner den tradisjonelle historisk-filologiske forskinga. Dei nye forsk- ingskrava i humaniora er hovudsakleg knytte til phd-prosjekt og utviklinga av forskarutdanning, forskarutdanningsprogram og forskarskular, der av- handlingar skal produserast innom avgrensa definerte tidsrom. I denne artikkelen vil eg jamføra nokre særtrekk ved den tradisjonelle his- torisk-filologiske avhandlingsjangeren – med utgangspunkt i Sandström si avhandling – med nokre sentrale krav til moderne phd-avhandlingar, for å setja i fokus desse to forskingstradisjonane innom humaniora sitt potensiale til å framskaffa kunnskapar og innsikter om mennesket som kulturskapar og kulturberar. Eg byggjer nok mykje på stoda innom språkvitskapen, men mange av problemstillingane er allmenne for tilhøva innom humanioraforskinga som heilskap. 1 Åke Sandström, 2015: Hå och hamna. Studier till en svensk dialektgeografisk atlas 8.) – Artikelförfattaren fungerade som fakultetsopponent vid disputationen. 8 Gunnstein Akselberg Ei avhandling i form av ein monografi reflekterer viktige kjenneteikn ved dei tradisjonelle disiplinane i humaniora. Kandidaten må ha ei omfat- tande oversikt for å kunna sjå dei store samanhengane og dei lange linene i faget. Kandidaten må også sjå sitt eige vitskaplege arbeid i eit overordna historisk perspektiv. Dette er eit særtrekk ved den humanistiske tradisjo- nen og det har bidrege til at monografisjangeren har vore den mest nytta innom humaniora. Den tradisjonelle avhandlinga er no på veg ut av humaniora av di den høver verken i omfang, metode eller tid med dei krava som vert sette til eit skolert phd-studium. Dette vil kunna føra til tap av viktige kunnskapar og innsikter av di dei nye phd-prosjekta ikkje fangar opp den typen forskings- spørsmål som den tradisjonelle humanioraforskinga har tatt seg av. Humaniora er på mange område inne i ei omstilling, også når det gjeld forsking og vitskapleg arbeid. Forskingsideal og forskingstradisjonar frå til dømes naturvitskapen og medisinen får større og større innpass i humaniora, både med omsyn til avhandlingssjanger, vitskapleg tilnærming, val av me- tode og dataanalyse. Dei fysiske phd-rammene, sjangerkrava til pdh-av- handlinga og phd-utdanninga – som forskarutdanning og forskarskular – har ein viktig funksjon i denne vitskaplege sosialiseringsprosessen som fører med seg ei omstilling bort frå den tradisjonelle forskingspraksisen til den nye phd-praksisen i humaniora. Konklusjonen min er at dei to avhandlingstradisjonane – altså den tradi- sjonelle historisk-filologiske avhandlinga og den nye phd-avhandlinga – har ulike eigenskapar som medfører ulike forskingsspørsmål og studieobjekt, og som såleis også vil resultera i ulike forskingsresultat og kunnskapar. Forskingsspørsmåla til Sandström ville her ha vore altfor omfattande til å løysast ved eit phd-prosjekt. Berre gjennom ei tradisjonell historisk-filolo- gisk avhandling vil dét vera mogleg. Pdh-avhandlinga høver nok i dei fleste tilfella betre til å forska på mindre og avgrensa forskingstema. Dei to tradi- sjonane har viktige eigenskapar som skil dei frå kvarandre, men med dei forskingsoppgåvene som finst i humaniora, hadde vi hatt trong for dei begge. 2. Nokre særtrekk ved Sandström si avhandling Avhandlinga Hå och hamna. Ordhistoriska och ordgeografiska studier av paddlingens och roddens äldsta terminologi i Norden er svært omfattande – med omsyn til problemstilling, empiri, kjeldemateriale, kronologi, og med omsyn til arbeidsinnsats og arbeidsperiode.     Gammalsvenskby The true story of the Swedish settlement in the Ukraine Author: Jörgen Hedman © Copyright The people of Gammalsvenskby in the Ukraine, a summary In the year 1781 one thousand Swedish peasants from Dagö in Estonia were transported to southern Ukraine, where Catherine II (the Great), Empress of Russia, gave them new land. After an eight-month journey through Russia, during which half of them lost their lives the Swedes reached their destination. Instead of the houses and the cultivated land they had been promised an empty plain met them. Suffering extreme hardships and often tormented by bandit raids, famine and diseases, they built a settlement that was called Gammalsvenskby. It is not difficult to be fascinated by Gammalsvenskby and the destiny of its inhabitants. Here we meet Swedes who could witness history change the world, Swedes who, although being tormented by famine and diseases, worked hard and broke new soil in a cosmopolitan and unstable corner of Europe. This part of the world was the scene of events of international and domestic significance: the Crimean War 1853-56, World War 1, the October-revolution, bandit-raids during the said revolution, the Civil war between the White and the Red armies. This was followed by the Collectivization of the farmers, Stalin’s terror during the thirties, the Second World War and the German occupation in 1941-44, which for the people of Gammalsvenskby ended with a transportation to camps in Germany. Later in 1945 this led to the deportation to labor camps in Siberia. Treachery and exploitation runs all through their history: 17th- and 18th- century Swedish landlords on Dagö, who infringed their rights, betrayed them.

    Open Letter to The Swedish Academy Committee for Nobel Prize in Literature New York City, October 13, 2019 Dear members of The Swedish Academy, I am a Bosnian born artist living in New York, whose work deals with genocide, collective memory and trauma. I’m writing in regard to your recent decision to grant Peter Handke The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2019, and the impact that has had on me, and other survivors, since the announcement on October 10th. After reading numerous articles about your decision in complete state of shock and disbelief, I was grateful and relieved to see that journalists, writers and public figures worldwide, had not forgotten Handke’s public denial of the Srebrenica genocide, nor his ardent support for Slobodan Milošević, Ratko Mladic, and Radovan Karadžić (the latter two convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1990’s by ICTY.) The many published responses underline the very serious emotional, psychological and physical reactions that are the consequences of your astonishing celebration. What is missing from many of these articles is how your decision to grant Handke the Nobel prize actually feels for those of us who have survived genocide and mass persecution he’s denying in our home country. What follows is a brief explanation of just how painful and assaulting your choice is for my communities both in Bosnia, and its diaspora. It is simple to employ the cliche that an artist’s political or moral positions should be separated from their work, but I would argue that in today’s political climate this is an unreasonable and willfully ignorant expectation.

With both Finnish and Swedish being national languages of Finland this thesis looked into which language a family chose, why they chose it, and how they helped their child maintain it. Looking at their perspective on this can allow us to get further insight into family language policy in Finland. The research method used here is a case study, with semi-structured interviews for the data collection and interpretive phenomenological analysis for the data analysis. This thesis interviewed a bilingual family with a Finn and a Swedish Swede and their one child. It found that while their initial language choice was Swedish, that their family language policy was dynamic. Over time the child was switched from Swedish medium education to Finnish medium education; however, at home multiple family language policies worked together to help maintain his Swedish language skills. The findings demonstrated that the right combination of family language policies and more formal educational settings can work together to help children grow up to be bilingual even if the minority language is mainly used at home.

    GEGN.2/2019/39/CRP.39 18 March 2019 English United Nations Group of Experts On Geographical Names 2019 session New York, 29 April – 3 May 2019 Item 5 (a) of the agenda * Reports by Governments on the situation in their countries and on the progress made in the standardization of geographical names Report of Sweden Submitted by Sweden** Summary: The national report of Sweden is divided into six sections. The first, on national standardization, provides a short overview of current legislation and of the main authorities involved in the standardization of geographical names. The second, on names in multilingual areas, contains information on minority language names and the responsible authorities. The third focuses on two ongoing committee reports concerning the Sami-speaking minority in the north of Sweden. The fourth includes information on an English online version of a booklet (published in Swedish in 2001 and revised in 2016) on good place-name practice. The fifth provides an updated presentation of two Swedish working groups – the Place-Name Advisory Board and the Geographical Names Network – that provide information and advice to different stakeholders. The sixth section contains a description of two research projects involving field collection of place names on the island of Öland and in the city of Uppsala, a rural and an urban landscape, respectively. The following resolutions adopted at the United Nations Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names are particularly relevant to the present work on name standardization in Sweden: • 1972: resolution II/36 (E/CONF.61/4) on problems of minority languages • 2002: resolution VIII/9 (E/CONF.94/3) on geographical names as cultural heritage • 2007: resolution IX/4 (E/CONF.98/136) on geographical names as intangible cultural heritage • 2012: resolution X/4 (E/CONF.101/144) on discouraging the commercialization of geographical names.
