With the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, everything has changed in the way we do business and the way we remember our Pearl Harbor Survivors and other military veterans. I hope that all of you are staying safe and well. As you know, we had to cancel our 2020 National Convention in Savannah, GA. However, we are planning to host a limited number of events in remembrance of the 80th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in . A luncheon has been planned for Sunday, December 5 at noon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with guest speaker Daniel Martinez, Pacific Parks Service and Memorial Historian. We will also have the multitalented Robert Brooks family to provide entertainment. Transportation will be provided to the December 7 remembrance ceremony at the Arizona Visitors Center. Please complete the registration form in this issue of the Offspring and send with your check to Mary Purifoy, National Treasurer. Transportation by bus to the December 7th Memorial Ceremony will be first come first serve.

Other events are being planned by the Pacific Park Service. To help coordinate our activities with the Park Service, Kathleen Farley, District 1 Director, has been invited by the Park Service to participate in the planning of these events. Kathleen will keep us posted so that members will know what else is going on and can plan accordingly. I thank all of you who responded to my email regarding your plans to attend the 80th Anniversary events.

As you remember, we had an election of officers and proposed changes to the National Constitution and Bylaws in November 2020. I am very proud to announce that you reelected me as your National President and Mary Schiano as your National Vice President for two more years. We will continue to make SDPHS the very best organization to honor our beloved Pearl Harbor Survivors and other military veterans keeping America free. All of the proposed amendments to the National Constitution were also approved. A copy of the amended National Constitution and Bylaws will be available for download on our SDPHS website by midsummer. I am also happy to announce that Eric “Rick” Miller will be continuing as our Offspring Editor. He has done a fantastic job and we owe him our gratitude and a round of applause. Thank you Rick!

Thank you for all you do to remember and honor those who served and continue to serve our country “Pearl Harbor ~December 7, 1941~Lest, We, Forget”

SDPHSAlbert SMALL Laurence STORE LaMarre ITEMS

In Loving Memory of Albert Laurence LaMarre By Tia Duppler, Daughter

Story from the Central Maine Morning Sentinel by Clayton LaVerdiere Saturday-Sunday, December 7-8, 1991

It was 7:45 on a sleepy Sunday morning at Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor and Larry LaMarre was wondering what he should do next. He had just completed a Navy-style breakfast, and there was plenty of time before Sunday Mass. Then, whoosh. Without warning, the young sailor from Waterville found himself witnessing the event that propelled the into World War II – “the day of infamy,” the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

“There were planes in the air, their wings bearing the insignia of the sun. Although I was assigned to the USS Minneapolis, it was at sea at the time. I wasn’t on it, because I had volunteered to be a diver (underwater demolition) and the Navy had sent me to train at a submarine base at Pearl Harbor. Sunday morning I had breakfast. I used to go to Mass aboard the USS . The chaplain there was the same one they later sang about in the song, Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.”

“The Japanese planes came over the mountains. They were stupid because they passed right over the fuel storage tanks. They were looking for our aircraft carriers, but the carriers were out at sea on maneuvers. I waited. You couldn’t get close to the harbor. Next morning they formed working parties, and that’s what I did (remove bodies of the dead). I did that for a couple of days. Then my ship came in and I rejoined it. I was so glad to see my crew. I never did make it to Mass that day.”

The Waterville youth, however, would go on to witness some of the most crucial encounters of the war in the Pacific. The and the Battle of the Coral Sea were among them. , site of some of the bitterest ground fighting of the war, saw LaMarre reach the island as an underwater demolition specialist. “We got to Guadalcanal on an old Liberty ship. There were 18 of us. It’s not like it was shown in the movies. It’s not like the movies at all. We made it to shore and hid among the trees. Boy, were we glad to see those guys (the American invading force) come.”

LaMarre went on to see 18 months of service in the , another bitterly contested area and scene of bloody fighting. The war finally came to an end and LaMarre returned to civilian status in 1945. But it wasn’t for long. The Navy called him back in 1950 for four more years of active duty in the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association until he passed away July 16, 2001.

Bernard “Bernie” D. Rubien

On August 25, 2020 I received an e-mail from SDPHS member Barbara Pendergast. She informed me that her father Bernard D. Rubien had passsed away. She made a simple request to have her dad’s name listed in the next issue of the Offspring. She sent me this message:

“It’s tough enough losing a beloved parent but when he was buried without a service or military honors because of the pandemic it was quite heartbreaking. I think he would have wanted to be mentioned in the newsletter”.

The story she wrote about her dad for the Pearl Harbor Remembered: Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of December 7, 1941 w/ Sons and Daughters of PHS Survivors is posted on the SDPHS website. https://www.sdphs.org/index.php/11-blog/8-bernard-d-rubien

I wanted to list more than his name in honor of him. - Eric Miller, SDPHS Editor

Keeping History Alive I received this e-mail from Michael T. Naya Jr. It is encouraging to see someone that wants to keep history alive. Let’s help him out! - Eric Miller - Editor SDPHS To all readers, My name is Michael T. Naya, Jr. and I am an eighteen year old Kean University freshman from Kenilworth, New Jersey. Since the age of fourteen I have been interviewing Great Depression survivors, World War II and Korean War veterans. I have been doing this because I love history and one day I would like to write a book on the men and women from these events. I am seeking any and all readers help in assisting me in this mission. I am urging any readers who may know of living Pearl Harbor Survivors willing to be interviewed to contact me at [email protected] I am hoping to interview as many survivors as possible especially due to this year being the 80th anniversary. To date I have interviewed thirty- three survivors both child and military personnel who were at Pearl during the attack. I feel that it is very important to remember the attack on Pearl Harbor and WWII as a whole for future generations to come. I am currently majoring in history-education in the hope of becoming a high school history teacher. I am an honorary member of the 5th Marine Division Association, 7th Armored Division Association, 12th Armored Division Association and of the Kenilworth Rotary Club. I am lead and founding member of the Young Historians Program of the D-Day Squadron. The YHP’s goal is to educate children, teangers and young adults on the history of WWII through surviving veterans, aircraft and educational outreach programs. I would be very grateful and appreciative for any and all help readers could provide.

Offspring Issue 1, 2021 Offspring Issue 1, 2021 All Hand’s on Deck

DECEMBER 7 “ALL HAND’S ON DECK” by Richard Hugen

In November last year a US Navy Chief Petty Officer, Derik Bowen, wrote to SDPHS and asked if we would recommend a person knowledgeable of the events at Pearl Harbor, HI, on December 7, 1941, preferably a survivor, to address a small group of about 10 Petty Officers at the Chief’s Mess at their Headquarters in Rhode Island on Monday, December 7, 2020. They intended to gather and discuss and commemorate the event among themselves. The email asked for “a couple of minutes” of the speaker’s time. They would appreciate it.

The gathering would be similar to others that they held during a calendar year. They serve as reminders of their heritage as leaders of others in the ; and, how those significant events from the past affected the US Navy on the day of the event and what lessons they learned and how they might be applied today at the commemoration event of their choosing. I saw the email and offered to respond. Dee gave the OK. Chief Petty Officer Bowen was changing duty stations from Tucson, Arizona to Peekskill, New York and stated he would be traveling if we responded to his request. He included his phone number and cautioned that if no response: leave a message he would return the call. (Bowen was the CPO of the recruiting station Tucson). I caught up with Bowen in Arkansas. He pulled over and stated he was glad for the connection and the opportunity to rest for a few moments as well. After the introductions and exchanging backgrounds, I gave him essentially my standard 50-minute presentation which recollects the events of December 7, 1941 as seen and felt by a 5-year-old Child Survivor. He stopped me a few times in order to catch up with his note taking. He said he would get back to me with particulars about the get together at the Chief’s Mess in a few days. I wished him a safe journey to Peekskill and beyond.

How to select a few key events from such a momentous event to provide the Chief’s Mess “a couple of minutes” in order to inform and engage in questions was perplexing me. I needn’t had to worry for long. Bowen phoned the next morning from a motel parking lot somewhere in Ohio. He cautioned that I take a deep breath and then stated: He had spoken with his Commanding Officer in Rhode Island, explained his first request to SDPHS, the intention for a few minutes with the Chief’s Mess, our conversation in Arkansas and would I be agreeable to speak by phone with the Northeast Section of the US Navy Reservists and active duty staff, a few other Chief’s Mess’s, and the administrative staff of his section in Peekskill, New York, on Monday, December 7, 2020 at 0800 Mountain Time? “It would be an honor” and “Mr. Hugen the CO has just this morning based on the conversation we had in Ohio and the information I (he) gave the CO, immediately issued an order that “All hands will be on Deck” for that conference call; about 250 people.” He apologized that it wouldn’t be a few Chiefs. Further, the CO commended him for sourcing a knowledgeable speaker and survivor. Also, the CO would consider it a personal honor for a survivor of such a momentous event to speak to his Northeast Section. Wow! From 10 minutes to a few Chief Petty Officers to about 250 people (Officers, enlisted and civilians) for 50-minutes was quite a leap; and humbling.

The conference call on December 7, 2020 at 1000 hrs. Mountain Time, was, by CPO Bowens account, successful. It was the talk I give to all groups about the events as seen and experienced by a 5-year-old survivor at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Commanding Officer asked that I convey to the leadership of the SDPHS his gratitude for the work we do: Lest We Forget. ------
