ACADEMIC REGALIA Academic regalia worn by faculty during commencement is based on attire from 12th- and 13th-century universities. Academic dress and accoutrements of this type have been used in the United States since colonial times. To maintain tradition and the conformity of academic symbols, little has changed in the symbolism of pattern and color since the Middle Ages. In 1895 an intercollegiate commission in the United States adopted a standardized code for the use of academic gowns, hoods and caps, which included regulating the cut, style and materials of gowns. In addition, colors, which were to represent the different fields of learning, were prescribed. Over the years, only minor revisions have been made to the code, which is followed by the majority of colleges and universities in America, including Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

There is no general rule on the position of the tassel on the mortarboard. However, numerous institutions have adopted a practice of requiring candidates for degrees to wear the tassels on the right front side before degrees are conferred, and to shift them to the left side when the degrees are awarded to them.

6 7 Dear Members of the Class of 2019:

Congratulations! Commencement is the culmination of years of commitment and hard work, and also the beginning of your next adventure.

You are embarking on a new journey at the same time that SIU is celebrating its 150th Anniversary. Throughout the year, we are celebrating our Saluki TRADITION, Saluki PRIDE and Saluki PROMISE — representing our past, present and future as an institution. But those themes echo throughout your individual accomplishments, as well.

As you celebrate, know that you will benefit from 150 years of strong Saluki TRADITION. That tradition includes outstanding faculty dedicated to helping students learn within and beyond the classroom. It includes a dedication to research and creativity, inclusivity and accessibility. And, it includes a commitment to ensuring that our students succeed.

You are our Saluki PRIDE. SIU has more than 250,000 proud alumni, and today you join their ranks. Like you, they made personal connections that will last throughout their lives. And like you, they translated success at SIU into success throughout their careers.

You are also a critical part of our Saluki PROMISE. You will always be a member of the Saluki family. You are welcome to visit campus often to connect with the next generation of SIU students, share your knowledge, catch a game, and let us know how you are doing. You will always be part of SIU, and that connection will help us build a better future.

On this day of achievement, please take a moment to give thanks to family members, friends, faculty and staff who supported you along the way. On behalf of the entire university, I thank you for letting us be a part of your success. We look forward to learning of your many accomplishments as SIU alumni.

Sincerely,

John M. Dunn Chancellor

Charles Delbert Neblett, an artist in residence, activist, organizer and performer, was born February 27, 1941 in Robertson County, Tennessee to his parents, Pleasant and Bernice Neblett, from whom he acquired his multiple talents of gospel singing, jazz, trumpet and drums. In 1955, after seeing the news about the brutal murder of a black teenager, , and the acquittal of his killers, Neblett realized that as an African-American male he had no rights that would be respected in his country of birth. Neblett heard Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and speaking against the injustices of legal segregation and decided to fight for civil rights.
