CLINE: Revolution and Reconciliation: The Student Interracial Ministry, Liberal Protestantism, and the Civil Rights Movement, 1960-1970 (Under the direction of Jacquelyn Dowd Hall) The Student Interracial Ministry (SIM) was a seminary-based, nationally influential Protestant civil rights organization based in the Social Gospel and Student Christian Movement traditions. This dissertation uses SIM’s history to explore the role of liberal Protestants in the popular revolutions of the 1960s. Entirely student-led and always ecumenical in scope, SIM began in 1960 with the tactic of placing black assistant pastors in white churches and whites in black churches with the goal of achieving racial reconciliation. In its later years, before it disbanded in mid-1968, SIM moved away from church structures, engaging directly in political and economic movements, inner-city ministry and development projects, and college and seminary teaching. In each of these areas, SIM participants attempted to live out German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer's exhortation to “bring the church into the world.” Revolution and Reconciliation demonstrates that the civil rights movement, in both its “classic” phase from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s and its longer phase stretching over most of the twentieth century, was imbued with religious faith and its expression. -

A Friendly Letter Issue Number Seventy-Seven ISSN '0739-5418 Eighth Month, 1987 Dear Friend, It happened again--We got scooped. And not once, but tNice. The topic is marriage: what does it mean among Friends today? What should it mean? Can we be content with the received religious, social and legal definitions of this relationship? What witness ought we to bear in this regard today? These and related questions were on my menu for a possible upcoming issue; but both Friends Journal and the Newsletter of Friends for Lesbian and Gay Concerns beat me to it. FLGe's long article in its summer issue dealt mainly with same- gender marriage, an item which has recently exercized several yearly and numerous monthly meetings; but Friends Journal's piece, by Janet Hemphill Minshall in its 7il-15 issue, dealt with a heterosexual and monogamous, but non-legal union. This is not only a matter of sexual morality: there are other aspects too, such as the tax and public benefit implications for marriages, especially between elderly or disabled people, which have come to some Friends' attention. Weighty matters, these, on which much seeking and threshing is needed; so they may turn up here yet. One other wrinkle that deserves mention here, however, is that the FLGe article in my view marked a transition for its Newsletter. It is rapidly outgrowing its role as an obscure special interest organ, and could become a new Quaker publication with a particular identity but of broad interest and Society-wide implications. It is a journal to take note of. -

Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -

The Plaintiffs have filed a motion for partial summary judgment in which they principally argue that the lyrics and melody in the first verse and its identical fifth verse (“Verse 1/5”) of the Song are not sufficiently original to qualify for copyright registration as a derivative work.1 For the reasons that follow, that portion of the Plaintiffs’ motion for summary judgment is granted. -

Sunday, February 8, 2015 Freedom Movement Memories by Peter Kellman It will soon be 50 years since I took a bus to Selma, Alabama. I was 19 years old. A few months earlier I had moved to an old farm in Voluntown, Connecticut, which was run by a peace activist organization called the New England Committee for Non-violent Action (CNVA). CNVA’s focus at the time was stopping the War in Vietnam. I was sent out with others to speak and protest against the War. I was sent down to Washington to organize demonstrations when the bombing of North Vietnam by our government began. On returning from Washington, CNVA received a call asking for people to go down to Selma, Alabama. As part of Voting Rights organizing project in Alabama, Jimmie Lee Jackson, an SCLC organizer, was murdered by a state trooper on February 18, 1965. Following Jimmie Lee Jackson’s murder a call went out (mainly to clergy) to come to Selma to help give visibility to the struggle there. A march from Selma to Montgomery to protest the slaying of Jimmie Lee Jackson was called. One who answered the call was Unitarian minister named James Reeb. The march, known as Bloody Sunday, took place on March 7th. A few days later, Rev. Reeb was beaten in downtown Selma and died March 11th. Another call went out for people to come to Selma. CNVA responded by sending me. I was given bus money and asked to go to Selma and represent CNVA. On the way down I was told to stop in New York City to talk to Bayard Rustin and get some advice about going south. -

She spent the night in jail singing songs and after her arrest joined the SNCC Freedom Singers to use music as a tool for civic action. Charmé Camden, New Jersey January 2021 CAPSTONE ABSTRACT A Change Is Gonna Come: A Critical Analysis Of The Benefits Of Musical Activism In The Civil Rights Movement by ERIN NICOLE NEAL Capstone Director: Dr. Stuart Z. Charmé The goal of this Capstone project is to understand what made protest music useful for political activists of the Civil Rights Movement. I will answer this question by analyzing music’s effect on activists through an examination of the songs associated with the movement, regarding lyrical content as well as its musical components. By examining the lyrical content, I will be evaluating how the lyrics of protest songs were useful for the activists, as well as address criticisms of the concrete impact of song lyrics of popular songs. Furthermore, examining musical components such as genre will assist in determining if familiarity in regards to the genre were significant. Ultimately, I found that music was psychologically valuable to political activists because music became an outlet for emotions they held within, instilled within listeners new emotions, became a beacon for psychological restoration and encouragement, and motivated listeners to carry out their activism. Furthermore, from a political perspective, the lyrics brought attention to the current socio-political problems and challenged social standards, furthered activists’ political agendas, persuaded the audience to take action, and emphasized blame on political figures by demonstrating that socio-political problems citizens grappled with were due to governmental actions as well as their inactions.
