24 Cottonwood House 150th Anniversary Built in 1864 by John Ryder and Allen Smith, Cottonwood House is a landmark along the Cariboo Wagon Road. Guests enjoyed fresh wholesome foods, clean rooms, and comfortable accommodations. The barns, pastures, and the Cottonwood River offered relief and rest for the freight animals. The house changed owners several times until John Boyd gained the title in 1874 and ran it continuously until 1951. The Boyd farm operated as a source for animal feed and supplies for the miners. News, messages, and mail were circulated from the house. In 1951 the property was sold to Vagn and Anna Olrik. The province procured the operation in 1963 and designated it as a provincial historic site. Today, the property is home to a restaurant, gift shop, and accommodation. Tours of the original 1864 Cottonwood House, farm interpretation, horse-drawn wagon rides, and a wheel chair accessible trail system are highlights of what guests can expect when they visit.
