2016 TERM AUTUMN Photo: Big Image Photography Record GCSE & IGCSE Results Hampton boys achieved record-breaking results at I/GCSE with 68% of all grades at A*, and 91% at A* or A grade.

A remarkable 36 boys achieved 10 A* grades in their exams, with over a third of the year group attaining 10 or 9 A* grades.

The School’s reputation for providing an exceptional all-round education was once again highlighted as our talented sportsmen, dramatists and musicians were among those receiving outstanding academic results.

Superb A Level Results Hamptonians celebrated an impressive A Level results day with over 91% of the results awarded being at A*, A or B grade.

30% of the total grades awarded to our Upper Sixth were at A*, compared to the national average of 8.1%, and 11 pupils secured 4 A* grades.

Fourth Year, Koby Kalavannan, has won both the U14 and U15 national titles at the British Chess Championships. This is the third year in a row that Koby has won two age categories at the championships.

Following his success, Koby represented at the European Youth Chess Championships. He will now compete at the World Youth Chess Competition in 2017 in Uruguay.

Koby is delighted with his current form:

Young Reporter Awards Six Hamptonians made it to the final of the Young Reporter Awards, which are run by the Newsquest media group. The aspiring journalists were selected from over 500 entrants from across the South East. Fifth Year pupil, Thomas Hazell, was awarded first place in the photojournalism category for his coverage of the international driving tournament, The Race of Champions.

Thomas won a book voucher and a place on a journalism day at Kingston University. Avon Tyrrell First Year boys enjoyed their residential trip to Avon Tyrrell in the New Forest.

Team Building Day Third Year boys participated in an action-packed team building day at the start of term.

The day helped the boys to develop new friendships and to become better acquainted with their Sixth Form Mentors and Form Tutors. Genocide Awareness The pupil-led campaign group, Genocide 80Twenty, organised Hampton’s first Genocide Awareness Day this term.

Over 150 school pupils from across attended the event to listen to the stories of four genocide survivors.

BBC presenter and historian Dan Snow also attended, chairing a Q&A session between the survivors and the students.

The event attracted widespread publicity with messages of congratulation from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and the former Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls.

Model United Nations

New Boys’ Concert The annual New Boys’ Concert featured 27 boys from the First and the Third Year, Third to Fifth Year pupils attended the Reigate Grammar School Model United Nations Conference. Bodiam Castle First Year historians visited the site of the Battle of Hastings in October, during the week of the 950th anniversary celebrations.

Boys welcomed the opportunity to try on pieces of medieval armour and to learn more about the battle, in which Harold and his army made their last stand for Anglo-Saxon England.

France The land of lavender was the destination for the annual Second Year sport and culture trip to Provence.

This action-packed week is designed to help the boys enhance their linguistic skills, whilst enjoying Italy the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The main awards of the evening included The Howes Cup, which was jointly presented to last year’s Vice- Captains, Luca Cericola, James Emeny and Sam Howard-Sneyd. The Fitzwygram Cup was awarded to Tom Nunan, last year’s School Captain.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Boys on the Gold and Silver practice expedition in the Lake District enjoyed perfect weather conditions.

This year’s trekkers basked in glorious sunshine as they journeyed from Penrith to Windermere over four days.

Travelling from the Northern to the Southern Lakes, the boys enjoyed stunning views and passed famous beauty spots, including Lake Ullswater, Grisedale Tarn and Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage. Barbershop Quartet sing at The Royal Albert Hall

The Hamptonics, Hampton’s barbershop quartet, performed at the Music for Youth Proms which is recognised as one of the most prestigious musical events in the UK.

Fifth Year Dylan Evans-Hutchison sang alongside three of last year’s leavers, Tom Nunan, Sam Seccombe and his brother Alfie Evans-Hutchison.

ISSP Science Day Hampton hosted another successful Independent/State School Partnership Science day this term.

Hamptonians were joined by pupils from Hampton High, Hollyfield School, LEH, Orleans Park School and Tolworth Girls’ School.

In Physics, they learned about upthrust by constructing their own hot-air balloons. Biology sessions examined the uses of enzymes, and in Chemistry, students witnessed an exploding jelly baby in order to study chemical reactions. Hampton Small Boats Head Over 720 crews from around the country took part in the annual Hampton Small Boats Head.

The event, which is a time trial over a 3000m course for pairs, doubles and coxed quads, took place in perfect weather conditions. Clear skies and minimal wind led to high quality racing throughout the day.

Hampton’s Director of Rowing, Mr Colin Greenaway, praised the athletes for their professionalism:

“All the young rowers should be proud of their efforts and I would like to thank everyone who made the day such a great success.”

Plate winners at the St Joseph’s Rugby Festival

The 1st XV took home the Plate after putting on an excellent display of rugby in the St Joseph’s national tournament with wins against RGS Newcastle, Gordon’s School and Eltham College.

In the final, Hampton faced the hosts, St Joseph’s College, and won without conceding a single point. Director of Rugby, Sean Thomson, was delighted with the team’s performance:

“We have a lot of younger boys in this team and to come away from the weekend having won the Plate is very pleasing.” Rowing International Honours Nine Hamptonians competed internationally over the summer. Dominic Jackson was selected to row at the Junior World Championships in Rotterdam, where he won a Bronze medal in the Junior Men’s Eight category.

Charlie Marcus (cox) and Tom Long represented Great Britain at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Poznan, winning two Gold medals. In the Home Countries International Regatta, Lewis Owens and Rory Gilligan rowed for England and Ireland respectively. J16 rowers Matt Hamilton, Harry Fieldhouse, Piero Ladhur and Tom Cross clinched victory for GB in the annual match against France.

Football Hampton’s 1st XI have displayed some strong performances in the Independent Schools Football Association Cup. A resounding 5-1 victory over the heavily-tipped Aldenham School earlier this term demonstrated the talent in the Hampton squad, securing them a place in the quarter-finals against Forest School, Walthamstow.

Ski Championships Third Year Sam Schomberg displayed his skills on the slopes, by finishing second in his category at the British Independent Schools Indoor Ski Championships.

Freddie John finished fifth in the U18 race, while Cameron Barclay and Jake Amor both finished in the top 20 in the U16 event.

Hampton 1st XI - Away Kit AUTUMN TERM 2016 Borneo Adventure The Adventure Society took Hampton boys and LEH girls on a three-week trip of a lifetime to Hong Kong and Borneo.

The group spent the first week with villagers in Kudat, northern Borneo, helping to build walls, repair fences www.hamptonschool.org.uk and extend pathways. The intrepid adventurers then embarked on a two-day climb of Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in South-East Asia, walking in darkness to reach the summit by sunrise on the second morning.

There were many other highlights including a visit to the Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre, scuba diving off Survivor Island and a boat trip around Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

Karate Success Martial Arts pupil, Jamie Lashley, has been awarded his 2nd Dan, the second black belt ranking in Shotokan Karate.

After months of intense training, the Sixth Former had to complete a number of tasks including a series of black belt routines, several ten kilometre runs and 30 minutes of Kumite, which is fighting against one or more opponents.

With this latest ranking, Jamie is now able to register with the English Karate Federation and to trial for the GB Olympic squad, competing in Tokyo 2020.
