Campus Ministry Dave Conard This is a time of plans in Campus ministry as well. Right now, “For thus says we a busy with planning for our summer service trips. They will be have in mind for staying at an orphanage Alter students have visited many times over the years. Our students and the kids there are both very you…” much looking forward to seeing each other. – Jeremiah 29:10-11 I am also planning right now for next year’s retreats. Current sophomores and juniors should have signed up for their retreat preferences by last week. If they have not, they can still do so by going to the link that was emailed to them at the beginning I always seem to reflect on plans at the close of the school of the month. Initial rosters for both Kairos and Junior Retreats year. It is a time where when we look back over the year, will be sent this week and posted on the peer ministry bulletin but more importantly a time when we also look forward board across from the chapel. These will remain up all summer to our future. As we look forward we often make plans – if anyone is in the building and wants to check them. These are lots of them. Our seniors have plans for life beyond Alter only preliminary lists though, and could change a good deal as High School. Our underclassmen are filled with plans for people request to be moved around. The finalized lists for the next year and are excited about taking on new roles in the year will be out at the end of August. school. There are 8th graders who are planning to become part of the Alter Community in the Fall. Faculty and staff So, as we end this year let us give thanks to God for its many are busy with plans for next year’s teaching and learning. blessings. As we look to our future, whatever it may be for Personally too, we have many plans. We plan as families each of us and for our school, let’s us do so with hope and for our future together. We may plan for a vacation or always allow God’s grace to enter our plans. some other relaxation time during the summer. And with all of this planning comes a great deal of excitement. It gives us an opportunity to look to the future with hope and embrace the possibilities. Planning also helps to make the future a little less scary. In uncertain times a plan can help us feel more in control.

And yet, it is good to remember that our plans are not our own. Our plans are only ever successful if they are rooted in God’s ultimate plan for us. It is sometimes easy to get caught up in our planning and feel as though we have it all figured out. We can delude ourselves into thinking we really are in control. When I begin to feel this way, God often sends me a reminder that all plans are ultimately his. His will for my life is His, not mine. It seems to be a lesson that I need to be taught over and over again. It is in following God’s plan for us that we become more fully who we are to be. And in this we find true hope, not a false sense of security. Our plans may not always work out, but God’s plan for us is sure. In a world of uncertainty, our faith gives us hope and our hope gives us joy.

In addition, a comprehensive survey of faculty, staff and students indicates that 81% believe that critical thinking lessons are “always” or “often” a part of student’s daily learning. The Catholic identity goal was to “increase student involvement in the liturgical expressions of the Church”. We believed that by increasing students understanding of the mass, it would inspire them to participate more. Over the past years, teachers and students were taught the meaning and importance of the rituals in the liturgy in a more intentional way. The importance of participation has also been emphasized on a regular basis as well. Over the past six years, the data indicates a 21% increase in student participation at mass, a 7% increase in the knowledge of the mass and a 12% increase in involvement in the Church at home or school. Alter will begin the process again next school year by collecting data, meeting the required standards and reflecting on its next goals for the six years.

Six years ago we had some students on Alter Scholars Grants and two students who received Knights Council Scholarships. We now have 108 students on some type of scholarship here at Alter! We’re making a difference one scholarship at a time…… It’s also been fun to see the successes of all of our students who have received scholarships during their time at Alter. Our scholarship students do great things….. We track our students who received scholarships to realize all the great things they do post-Alter. They are succeeding at some of the best colleges, and some are now graduated and working at strong companies doing great things. Did the scholarship make a difference? We hope so. The implementation of scholarships have resulted from many different influences. We see scholarships that have started from parents honoring their children, from children honoring their parents for the sacrifices they made to send them to Alter, from alumni who care deeply about their school, and from students honoring past coaches and teachers. The opportunity to keep Alter affordable now seems endless.

TOP 3 Reasons Why You Should Be An Active Part of THE Alter Boosters

1. You are supporting every student who attends Alter. You may think The Alter Boosters is a sports organization. That is a popular misconception. The Alter Booster Organization is made up of ALL Current Alter Parents, as well as Past Parents, Alter Alumni and Friends of the school. Our mission is to provide financial support to the school and its operations. While there are several different booster organizations within the Alter Community, each supporting its own organization, The Alter Boosters supports every Alter Student.

2. You are contributing to Alter’s “Tax Levy”. In 2013, Kettering voters passed a 5 year/$5,000,000.00 tax levy for Kettering City Schools. Averaged out, each of the 12 public schools will receive less than $85,000.00 from this levy per year. Being a private school, Alter does not receive money from this levy. Thanks to The Alter Boosters, we ’t need it. The Alter Boosters contributes on average $250,000.00 annually to Alter High School. That’s almost 3 times what the public schools receive. The Alter Booster Organization is the #1 Benefactor of Alter High School, donating over $6,000,000.00 since 1983.

3. You are continuing the Alter Tradition and keeping Alter Strong. So many Alter Alumni return to the Alter Community to raise their own children because of the strength and support they received and continue to receive from this community. Alter prides itself on educational excellence. But Alter is also a place where we live our Christian Values every day. Within our community, every student, every parent, every family has a chance and the support needed to thrive. Alter truly is where you belong.

HOW can you get involved? The best part is YOU are already a part of the organization. There is no application process, no membership fee and EVERYONE is welcome. We are always looking for people who want to share their time, talent and/or treasure with Alter. It’s easier than you think. Whether you sponsor an event, work a shift at AlterFest or become a member of the Booster Executive Board, you are a valued and needed member of this organization. Help us help Alter thrive. Be an Active member of THE Alter Boosters.

We are currently recruiting for a few key AlterFest positions. It’s easier than you think. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, please contact Joanne George at [email protected] or call 937-434-2059. Be a part of the greatest family festival in the Dayton area and the booster organization that supports every Alter student.
