1 HOME MISSION BOARD EDITORIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT COLLECTION AR 631 – 8 John Caylor, Home Missions magazine, November 1959. Prepared by: Dorothy A. Davis Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives June 2009 Updated November, 2011 2 Home Mission Board Editorial Services Department Collection AR 631 – 8 Summary Main Entry: Southern Baptist Convention. Home Mission Board Editorial Services Department Collection Date Span: 1955 – 1981 Abstract: The Editorial Services Department, part of the Communication Division of the Home Mission Board, produced Home Missions magazine and missions study books and tracts that were distributed through bookstores owned and operated by the Baptist Sunday School Board. The collection contains material in three series – one for each director of the Editorial Services Department: John L. Caylor, Walker L. Knight, and C. William Junker. Included in the collection are correspondence, interviews, and manuscript drafts. Size: 6.5 linear ft. (13 boxes) Collection #: AR 631 – 8 Historical Sketch As part of the Communication Division of the Home Mission Board, the Editorial Services Department published Home Missions magazine and other materials such as mission study books and tracts. The Department distributed these products through Baptist Book Stores, owned and operated by the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources). From its inception, the editorial section of the Communication Division helped provide the tangible products needed to fulfill the Division’s objective “to provide plans, materials, and information to churches, associations, state conventions, and other Southern Baptist Convention agencies in the support of and involvement in missions in the homeland.” For example, the mission study books were produced annually. The study books centered on a theme chosen by a committee and were often similar to a theme used by other Protestant denominations. The books targeted different age groups – adults, youth, intermediate, juniors, and primaries – and more people learned about the missions efforts undertaken by the Home Mission Board. John L. Caylor served as secretary of the department and editor of Home Missions from1945 – 1959. Walker L. Knight succeeded Mr. Caylor in 1960 following his retirement. Mr. Knight was editor of Home Missions from 1959 – 1983 and incorporated many social issues, such as race and gender, into the magazine’s content. C. William Junker took over as director following Mr. Knight’s resignation in 1983. 3 Mr. Caylor grew up in Alabama, and graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, Alabama and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He died of cancer December 20, 1966 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Walker L. Knight graduated from Baylor University in 1949 and was the associate editor of the Baptist Standard from 1950 until becoming secretary of the Department and editor of Home Missions in 1959. After leaving the Home Mission Board in 1983, Mr. Knight founded a new independent publication, SBC Today, now Baptists Today, and served as publisher and editor until 1988. C. William Junker worked with the Baptist Sunday School Board from 1957 until moving to the Home Mission Board as director of the Promotion Department in 1980. Mr. Junker graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas. Scope and Content Note The Home Mission Board Editorial Services Department Collection contains six and a half linear feet of materials in thirteen document boxes. Materials include correspondence, interviews, and manuscript drafts. The collection has materials from the tenures of three directors for the Editorial Services Department: John L. Caylor, Walker L. Knight, and C. William Junker. There is a series for each director arranged by their chronological succession. Most of the collection is correspondence between John L. Caylor during his tenure with the Department. Topics within the correspondence relate mainly to his work as editor of Home Missions and other missions materials. In addition, there are a couple of manuscript drafts that Mr. Caylor edited for publication. The series containing Mr. Knight’s materials includes mainly interviews conducted with various missionaries and information related to missionary education and world missions conferences. Researchers should note that there is only one notebook with documents related to projects worked on by William Junker. Arrangement Arranged chronologically by series Provenance The North American Mission Board donated the collection to the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives in 2004.
