THE CENTENARY MEET AT ZERMATT, 1957 TI-IE CENTENARY MEET AT ZERMATT, 1957 Pages from a Diary BY SIR JOHN I-IUNT wo days after the Raclette party on Riffelalp, our party returned to the Betemps hut, after an exceptionally cold and windy traverse of the Lyskamm, which was, however, noteworthy I for the membership of the party itself; it included the leaders of two Swiss Everest Expeditions, Eduard Wyss-Dunant and Albert Eggler, as well as Fritz IJuchsinger, who, with Ernst Reiss, made the first ascent of Lhotse in 1956. .. Our next objective was the Brei thorn via the Klein Triftje (or Young ridge) and we were busy with preparations from the moment of our return to the hut. The composition of the party for this next expedition changed with the arrival of George Band and Chris Brasher, hot-foot from the Bregag­ lia; my wife and Wyss-Dunant dropped out, and Hobhouse, Tyson and I were joined by Eggler, Luchsinger and Fritz Gansser . August 22. We left the hut at 3 a.m. in clear starlight. Band and Brasher got away to a flying start and made a great pace across the Grenz glacier towards the foot of the buttress thrown down from the I{lein Triftj e; we could see their lantern almost half a mile ahead of us when we were barely half-way across. Misfortune struck us early, for at brief intervals both Luchsinger and I broke our crampons on the rough going; we managed to make temporary repairs, but I was short of t,;vo of the inside points, which proved awkward later on.

    One Man's Fourfhousanders PETER FLEMING (Plates 41-47) No one in my family had ever shown more than scant interest in hills and mountains, and none could see any sense in climbing them. During my schooldays, as I never took an interest in sport and hated football and cricket, I was written off on school reports as an unmotivated weakling when it came to competitive games. But a new world opened up for me suddenly and dramatically when, at the age of 14, I discovered the Lakeland hills almost on my doorstep, and so it all began. Twelve months after I had left school the headmaster proudly announced at morning assembly that an Old Boy had made headlines in the local paper, upholding the school's high standards ofinitiative and achievement, and setting a fine example which he hoped everyone would remember and strive to maintain. This Old Boy had entered the first mountain trial in the Lake District as the youngest competitor and had come third over the finishing line, ahead of seasoned marathon and mountain runners. At last I had found a challenge, and it seemed that I had a natural affinity towards mountains. Four years later, in 1956- after an intensive apprenticeship, summer and winter, on Lakeland and Scottish hills -I made my first venture to the Alps. Four ofus from our local rambling club - Doug, Colin, Bill and I- drove out in a Ford Popular to Randa in Switzerland, where we took the rack railway to Zermatt. My neck ached with gazing at those awesome mountains.

PECK . ... • • FTER eight years' absence from the Alps, a kindly Providence brought me to Gerieva .to · work during April and May, and o'n finishing work there I was able· to take three weeks' leave at the .very best period of. the year. A few week ends well spent from Geneva .in 'brushing up one's ·skiing on the Rochers de N aye and the Brevent, together with some exhausting early morning scrambles on the Saleve~ ·were valuable training which enabled me to extract the utmost from the holiday that followed. Perhaps the most interesting. of these excursions from Geneva was an unpremeditated ascent of the Haute Cime of the Dents du Midi early in May when the small snow traverses and the scramble through the Pas d'Encel, of which I retained childish memories of 2 3 years before, gave a foretaste of greater things to come, while the climb of the 2200 metres from Champery and back in a single day made a good contribution to training. Meanwhile, weeks of fine weather slipped by in Geneva, and I fretted with anxiety lest both my earlier plans for a skiing holiday and ·my subsequent ones for climbing should be thwarted by some untimely break in the weather, but these fears proved wholly unjustified.

DIXON ' A paper read to the Alpine Club on April 8, 1952 T was with particular pleasure that I looked forward to my climbing holiday in 1951 because, although this was my eighth climbing season in the Alps, it was my first visit to Zermatt and indeed the t time I had climbed anywhere in Switzerland. My three com­ panions Brian Howl, Alan Imrie and Alasdair Kerr were also making their first acquaintance with Z~rmatt. The first plans for our trip were made by Howl and me during a week-end at ·ynys Ettws in May. During this week-end we divided up the preliminary jobs to be done before the holiday began. Imrie was at that time with the Army in Germany and we asked him to arrange the .accommodation for us. Our only instructions were that we should prefer Randa or Taesch to Zer­ matt and that it must be very good and very cheap. My letter to Imrie stating our requirements was met, perhaps not surprisingly, by a pro­ longed silence. In fact, owing to delays in the post from Germany it was not until I met him in Randa on July 19 that I learnt how admirably he had solved this difficult problem. He had hired a flat in Randa,. complete· and self-contained with three bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen with electric cooker and lavishly supplied with crockery. and everything we could desire. Our landlady, Fraulein Pauline Summermatter lived above us, while belo~ there was a Belgian family, one member of which was much addicted to playing the trombone.

    Zermatt Dog Guide Where dogs feel great! DOGS – why we love them so much … because they are the best therapy. Woof-woof – it‘s great to be a dog around here! A vacation in Zermatt is a wonderful experience for my master and mistress and for me, too. My favorite morning walk takes us up the mountain right behind Hotel Simi. Once we are past the Zayeta house, I can run free without a leash. There are many animals in the wild around here: deer, chamois, marmots, to name just a few, and also sheep. I make sure that I don‘t scare them up. My mas- ter and mistress always carry a little plastic bag with them in case I need to do my business. Thus we keep the trails clean. While we are within the village I always walk on a leash (as required by law in the canton of Valais). That is actually a good thing because there are quite a few people on the street, and since they don‘t know me they might be scared of me. Outside the village there is enough space for me to run free. Yet I always stay near my master and mistress on the trail. In most restaurants in Zermatt, I am welcome. I enjoy lying quietly in a corner and observing the scene. The team at the front desk of Hotel Simi knows which restaurants welcome dogs, and they are happy to make a reservation for us. DOGS – why we love them so much … because they are the best therapy.
