    ISRAEL AS A JEWISH STATE Daniel J.Elazar Beyond Israel's self-definition as a Jewish state, the question remains as to what extent Israel is a continuation of Jewish political history within the context of the Jewish political tradition. This article addresses that question, first by looking at the realities of Israel as a Jewish state and at the same time one compounded of Jews of varying ideologies and per suasions, plus non-Jews; the tensions between the desire on the part of many Israeli Jews for Israel to be a state like any other and the desire on the part of others for it to manifest its Jewishness in concrete ways that will make it unique. The article explores the ways in which the tradi tional domains of authority into which power is divided in the Jewish po litical tradition are manifested in the structure of Israel's political sys tem, both structurally and politically; relations between the Jewish reli gion, state and society; the Jewish dimension of Israel's political culture and policy-making, and how both are manifested through Israel's emerging constitution and the character of its democracy. Built into the founding of every polity are certain unresolved ten sions that are balanced one against another as part of that founding to make the existence of the polity possible, but which must be resolved anew in every generation.     Can We Prevent the Hareidization of Orthodox Judaism? Byline: Yonatan Benarroch In the past generation, Orthodox Jewry in Israel has increasingly become more extreme and has isolated itself from mainstream Israeli society. There is a continued distance and alienation of the Orthodox population from the non-Orthodox community, and a seeming lack of interest in integrating halakha and Torah with the concerns and circumstances of modern life. A similar tendency can be seen in the American Modern Orthodox community, having shifted in the past years toward the right (both religiously and politically). This phenomenon is known as “the Hareidization of Orthodox Jewry.” This article introduces an Israeli organization that strives to promote an alternative route for Israeli Orthodoxy, mainly by returning to the core values of Torah im derekh erets, a religious worldview promulgated by the great nineteenth-century rabbi, Samson Raphael Hirsch. Introduction The sexual revolution that burst onto the scene in the Western world more than a half century ago transformed the basic assumptions and mores of societies that had been rooted for centuries in legal and moral attitudes based on the Judeo-Christian worldview (more Christian, of course, than Judaic). The core values of traditional societies stemmed from biblical interpretations in a range of religious traditions as mediated by law and the social attitudes of the modern nation state. For example, in the United States sixty years ago, divorce was highly disesteemed, with many formal legal obstacles to its use in place. Abortion was illegal in every state. Living as a couple without marital commitment was stigmatized, as was having children out of wedlock. For homosexuals, core values shaped law in even more repressive ways. Homosexual congress was a crime that was regularly prosecuted, and revelation of one's homosexuality could end one's career and lead to discrimination in housing, employment, health care and other areas of civic life without any legal recourse. Such treatment was not only legal but considered appropriate in dealing with "deviants" and "perverts," as gay people were referred to in common parlance. Homosexuality was still considered a mental illness by leading mental health organizations, and people lived their entire lives “in the closet" so as to avoid the professional and personal repercussions of even rumors of homosexuality. 1 Sixty years later, in one of the most startling and swift cultural, societal, and legal shifts that any society has experienced, the entire classic traditional moral underpinnings of Western society have been turned on their head.

    8 The Halakhic Status of the Secular Jew: A Question of Public, Not Personal, Halakhah Yuval Cherlow An eternal covenant has been established between Am Yisrael and the Almighty. the torah repeatedly states that this covenant is a mutual commitment of two parties—we are to be the unique people of God, and we will accept him as our God. the first covenant was enacted with Abraham, and God combined the brit of circumcision with the eternal promise of a covenant with the Land of israel and People of israel. the final covenant is binding for all time. “i make this covenant, with its sanctions, not with you alone, but both with those who are 225 Non Orthodox Relationships.indb 225 7/13/10 10:06 AM Yuval Cherlow standing here with us this day before the Lord our God and with those who are not with us here this day.”1 We are speaking here of an eternal mutual commitment as well as reward for those who keep the covenant and punishment for those who defy it. Nowhere does the torah suggest in any way that it is possible to abrogate this commitment. true, toward the end of his life Joshua (24, 15) suggests that “if you are loath to serve God, choose which ones who are going to serve” but even this statement does not constitute a prophetic acceptance of the possibility of cutting the unique bond between God and Am Yisrael. the Oral torah expresses distinctly the halakhic implications of the covenant. the halakhah demands from each and every Jew to obey all of the divine commandments.

    Curriculum Vitae – Dr Yossef Charvit For the past 20 years, I have been a lecturer in Jewish history at various institutions of higher academic learning – Bar-Ilan Universities, Efrata and Ashkelon Academic College. I am privileged to be the scion of a family of rabbis and educators in Algeria and France. My areas of expertise are: French and North African Jewry, with emphasis on Algerian and Moroccan Jewry in the Modern Era; the pre-State Jewish community in Eretz Israel in the Modern Era and the history of Hokhmat Israel in France during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. My research work began with my master’s thesis on Jewish Education in an Era of Change, that opened a window to Hebrew sources of the Jewish community of Algeria in the Modern Era. When I completed my pre-doctoral obligations (DEA) with honors (in France, between the M. A. and the doctorate, one writes an essay of overt methodological character, serving as the research infrastructure for the doctorate), I completed writing my doctoral dissertation, that treated the topic in greater depth. The pre-doctoral essay concerned the Algerian rabbinic elite in the Modern Era: Jewish education, the Jewish family and the Hebrew Haskalah, concentrating on three foci: Eretz Israel, Algeria and France. My research examined a wide variety of archives and I did not limit myself to conventional French and Judeo-French sources alone, but relied on archives that had not been examined previously, such as French rabbinic literature, consular archives, the Hebrew and Enlightenment press and Arabic sources, as discussed in the research of Profs.
