Constable for the Scottish History Society 1896 INTRODUCTION The state of my health during the last six months will, I trust, be accepted as a valid excuse for my not attempting to write so detailed an introduction to this volume of the Records of the Commission of the General Assembly as I wrote to the former one, and that this excuse will be accepted all the more readily when I state, that it has been mainly by my efforts to fulfil the work I had undertaken for this and a kindred society, that my health has given way. By the departure of the Scottish army from England in 1646-7, the unique influence of Scotland on England in matters of both civil and ecclesiastical policy was sadly weakened; and by the ill-starred invasion of England by the Duke of Hamilton and the adherents of the ‘Unlawful Engage- ment,’ nominally to ensure the restoration of Charles to his regal power on Covenanting terms, but really to secure his deliverance from his Sectarian jailors on terms less onerous, that influence may be said to have been finally extinguished, and the calamity the invaders sought to avert rendered all but inevitable. -

The present volume is for the most part occupied with Notes and Glossary. Two poems by Thomas Churchyard — “ The Siege of Edenbrough Castell ” and “ Mvrtons Tragedie ”—have been included, as possessing considerable interest of themselves, and as illustrating two important poems in the collection. A complete Index of Proper Names has also been given. By some people, I am aware, the Satirical Poems of the Time of the Reformation that have come down to us through black- letter broadsheets are considered as of little consequence, and at best only “sorry satire.” But researches in the collections of historical manuscripts preserved in the State-Paper Office and the British Museum have shown that, however deficient these ballads may be in the element of poetry, they are eminently trustworthy, and thus have an unmistakable value, as contemporary records. A good deal of pains has accordingly been taken, by reference to accredited authorities, to explain unfamiliar allusions and clear up obscure points in the poems. It is therefore hoped that not many difficulties remain to perplex the reader. A few, however, have defied solution. To these, as they occurred, I have called attention in the notes, with a view to their being taken up by others who, with greater knowledge of the subject or ampler facilities for research than I possess, may be able to elucidate them. -

Article for New College Anniversary Bulletin April 2006 Teaching theology in Edinburgh: beginnings The teaching of theology and divinity has a very long history in Edinburgh, of which the New College phase only forms the latest chapter. In the sense of formal theological instruction, it was the Dominicans who began the tradition when their Edinburgh friary was founded in 1230, the first to be opened in Scotland. The Blackfriars buildings were in the Cowgate and by the sixteenth century they included a particularly fine hall, spacious enough to be the meeting place for the Councils of the Scottish Church called in 1549, 1552 and 1559 that produced reforming statutes and Archbishop Hamilton's Catechism. The hall was probably used on a daily basis to accommodate part of the comprehensive educational training undertaken by the friars, but they generously made way each year for the Scottish Exchequer and its accounting sessions. As the most commodious roofed space in Edinburgh, apart from the Castle and Holyrood, the Blackfriars hall was in considerable demand and it was at the heart of the famous 'Cleanse the Causeway' fight in 1520. During the 1550s there were attempts to make more provision for higher education in the capital. One initiative came from the Queen Regent, Mary of Guise, mother of Mary, Queen of Scots, who founded two public lectureships, one in Greek and another in civil and canon law, both regarded at the time as ecclesiastical subjects. The second initiative flowed from the noted humanist Robert Reid, bishop of Orkney, who left provision in his will in 1558 for a college with a distinctly non-clerical emphasis to be erected in Edinburgh to teach the 'new learning'. -

To some of his con- temporaries he appeared as the apostle of eternal truth divinely inspired, to others as an architect of evil. Later ages saw him variously as a stirrer-up of strife, the founder of the protestant kirk, the perverter of reform into devious ways, the father of intolerance, the hero of the everlasting verity, the destroyer of the old and the beautiful. For centuries he was, despite all criticism, one of the heroes of Scotland. Latterly there has been an attempt to show him as the man who robbed Scotland of her heritage of art and enjoyment and plunged her into the ugly gloom of a perpetual Sabbath wherein the Calvinistic elect found their main pleasure in denouncing the shortcomings of blinded ritualists. And now the wheel comes round full circle. -

The following pages have been published chiefly for those who take an interest in the locality of the ancient and now flourishing town of Arbroath, and also with the view of removing the obscurity which has hitherto involved the history of its once magnificent monasteiy. Among other sources of information the Chartulary of the Abbey is entitled to stand first in rank. The most interesting portions of these monastic writings have been digested and arranged in this volume. An endeavour has thus been made to bring out the points in which they, along with other authentic documents, tend to illustrate the history of the district. In alluding to the history of past times, our ancestors have been allowed as far as possible to appear in their own dress, and speak in their own words. This will account for the number of quotations in the antique style, which may probably render the perusal of some portions of the book a little difficult to readers otherwise well educated. -

It was then held by French soldiers who were soon to go home in consequence of a peace signed between the Catholic (and French) party and the Protestant (and English) party in that period of Scottish Civil War. A messenger at arms was seeking him with a summons from the Protestant Lords to compeir before the Council to answer accusations laid against him for his behaviour in Fife. -

The effects of the change which it produced, in religion, in manners, in politics, and in literature, continue to be felt at the present day. Nothing, surely, can be more interesting than an investigation of the history of that period, and of those men who were the instruments, under Providence, of accomplishing a revolution which has proved so beneficial to mankind. Though many able writers have employed their talents in tracing the causes and consequences of the Reformation, and though the leading facts respecting its progress in Scotland have been repeatedly stated, it occurred to me that the subject was by no means exhausted. I was confirmed in this opinion by a more minute examination of the ecclesiastical history of this country, which I began for my own satisfaction several years ago. While I was pleased at finding that there existed such ample materials for illustrating the history of the Scottish Reformation, I could not but regret that no one had undertaken to digest and exhibit the information on this subject which lay hid in manuscripts, and in books which are now little known or consulted. Not presuming, however, that I had the ability or the leisure requisite for executing a task of such difficulty and extent, I formed the design of drawing up memorials of our national Reformer, in which his personal history might be combined with illustrations of the progress of that great undertaking, in the advancement of which he acted so conspicuous a part. -

Yet much of Melville’s reputation has been based on the seventeenth-century Presbyterian historical narratives written by the likes of James Melville (Andrew’s nephew) and David Calderwood. These partisan accounts formed the basis of modern historiography in Thomas M’Crie’s monumentally influential Life of Andrew Melville . Modern historians broadly agree that Melville’s portrayal as a powerful and decisive church leader in these narratives is greatly exaggerated, and that he was at best an influential voice in the Kirk who was quickly marginalised by the adult James VI. However, only James Kirk has commented at any length on Melville’s other role in Jacobean Scotland—that of developing and reforming the Scottish universities. -

Introduction he spirituali were members of the Church of Rome in Italy in the Tearlier sixteenth century who held Lutheran or semi-Lutheran views on the doctrine of justifcation by faith but who remained within the bounds of Romanism. Te spirituali movement was a broad one, ranging from crypto-Protestants or Nicodemites,1 at one extreme, to those who believed in the sacrifce of the mass and who were ready to persecute Protestants, at the other. Te movement was strong in the 1530s and 1540s and included several cardinals such as Fregoso, Contarini, Sadoleto, Bembo, Seripando, Pole, and Morone. Twice (Pole in 1549 and Morone in 1565), a spirituali cardinal was almost elected as Pope. Te spirituali movement was bitterly opposed by the zelanti in the Church of Rome; and the setting up of the Roman Inquisition in 1542 was partly aimed at the suppression of the spirituali. Te foremost zelanti were Carafa, who was Pope Paul IV from 1555 to 1559, and Michele Ghislieri, who was Pope Pius V from 1566 to 1572.2 1. Te term ‘Nicodemite’ was introduced by Calvin to describe those of Protestant beliefs in France and Italy in the 1540s who chose to remain in the Church of Rome to avoid persecution; see C. M. N. Eire, War Against the Idols, (Cambridge, 1986), p. 236. Similar conduct was found soon aferwards in Germany (following the Augsburg Interim of 1548) and in England (during the reign of Mary I, 1553-58). -

The Dual Aspects of Ministerial Training in Late Sixteenth Century: Edinburgh’s ‘Tounis College’ and the formation of ministers’ early career with special regard to the ‘Exercise’ Péter Attila Komlósi Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2012 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the transformation of the clergy in the late sixteenth- century Scotland in which ministerial training had a crucial role to play both in the academia and in the Kirk. In order to demonstrate this transformation attention will be focused on the training of ministers at the Town College, Edinburgh and then following the unfolding of their ecclesiastical career including the ‘exercise’. The foundation of the ‘Tounis College’ in Edinburgh is placed within the broader context of the expansion of higher education throughout Europe.
