On the Backgrounds of the Renaissance and the Renaissance Humanism- -Centering Around the Epistemology and Soteriology of the Via Moderna Vo,8 No.2 June 30, 2018 On the Backgrounds of the Renaissance and the Renaissance Humanism- -Centering around the Epistemology and Soteriology of the Via Moderna- Chan-moon Park (WAIS, S. Korea) Abstract I had learned from history books that the Renaissance period was referred to a period of light and human- centrism, which succeeded the Medieval ages, a period of God-centrism, also called the dark ages. I questioned why the period of God-centrism had been called the dark ages, and why Luther’s reformation had taken place. Further, if the Renaissance people had been human-centric, whether they had lived without God, or whether they had not needed Jesus. When I had studied a history for God’s glory, He has guided me to a best way spiritually and physically, and most of all let me gain an answer to my academic questions; the following lecture is based on the answer. As a Western history professor, I kept studying about Erasmus and about Renaissance humanism and received a Ph.D. (1995). I also published a book titled, Synthetic Interpretation on the Renaissance Humanism -focusing on Erasmus-like Humanists’ Religious Thoughts (Hye-An, 2011: Korean Version). This article has revised and arranged a paper to lecture at the U. S. Mid-West UBF Staff meeting, in September of 2016. Perhaps the greatest driving force in the development of medieval thought during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries had been the confidence that the truths of faith were accessible to human understanding and rational demonstration. It had nurtured a diversity of summae and systems, designed to incorporate the conclusions derived from the accumulating wealth of natural, mainly Aristotelian, knowledge into a Christian framework; it also led to some of the greatest works of Christian apologetics, including St. Thomas Aquinas's Summa contra gentiles, with the purpose of convincing the unbeliever and the infidel. With Henry of Ghent, Duns Scotus, and, even more with William of Ockham, however, the growing doubts over such a union were given full and lasting expression. Although not the first to do so, they reverted to a conception of theology as an indepen­ dent pursuit which was marked off from natural knowledge in the strict sense. Theology, they held, was a self-contained corpus with its own tenets and principles. It could not be regarded as just one more science governed by laws which were applicable to all knowledge, for, as founded on revealed truth, it was dependent on faith, not natural experience. These thinkers, moreover, were so obsessed by the contingent nature of all creation that they refused to countenance the possibility of arriving at a knowledge of God through creation.

    HUMANISM IN BRIEF These days, it seems, more and more of our performing guilds and vendors are involved in a wider spectrum of “Renaissance” events: Henrican and Marian, as well as Elizabethan; Celtic and Continental, as well as English. One thing that all these sixteenth century venues had in common was the primary intellectual engine of the Renaissance ‐ Humanism. All the well‐traveled merchants, clerics, and courtiers many of us portray were aware, to one degree or another, of the tectonic‐like shift in education, culture, and philosophy that was slowly and steadily making itself felt throughout all Europe. The medieval, God‐centered, “rational” order was being challenged by students and teachers of ancient Greek and Latin classics who championed the importance (if not the primacy) of human passions and emotions in the quest of perceiving and living the “moral life.” After all, who doesn’t want to be able to teach their children how to be a “good person”, to be well thought of in this life, and safe and secure in the next? Scholasticism and Aquinas Supposedly, when Abe Lincoln was asked his opinion on sin, he replied, “I’m agin’ it.” And so, too, it is sometimes easier to define a historical concept by first getting a handle on the earlier concepts with which it sought to contend, and eventually replace. The dominant educational, philosophical, and theological system of the late Middle Ages was Scholasticism, and its personification was the Dominican friar Thomas Aquinas. The “Dumb Ox” (no, really: his buddies at university called him that; at 300+ pounds, he was so clumsy they wouldn’t let him in the kitchen) explained the moral life this way: God possesses, knows and, in fact, is all ultimate truth; God has expressed this truth through creation, establishing the moral order of all things (the natural law); God created humans with an intellect capable of knowing this truth and so control the human passions which would distract or disable us from leading the moral life we were created to live.

This paper suggests that juxtaposing political texts from the medieval Islamic world with their Christian counterparts will allow for a better understanding of the contours of the debate on the space for politics, framed in primary sources as the perennial tug of war be- tween religious and lay authority. The implications of this line of inquiry for the history of European political thought are significant as well. Its basic claim is: “All significant concept of the modern theory of the state are secularized theological concepts,” implying a concealed theological link to legitimacy even in the modern period. On a truly global scale, Schmitt influenced theory, terminology and methodology of the social sciences and historiography. The course will evaluate the concept, its explanatory value, its validity and applicability, together with its historical forms. Schmitt was by no means the first theorist to apply the term political theology (although he gave a new meaning to it). Already in antiquity it formed part of the Hellenist tripartite theology (besides natural theology and mythical theology). Polybius and Panaitios defined it as a type of theology that serves the interest of the polity. More generally, it could be understood as a theology which is constitutive for a given political order, the basis of which was the city-state. In the Hellenistic realm, especially with the expansion of Rome, and the development of the Roman Principate theories of legitimacy increasingly turned to the cosmic structure for the justification of the monarchy of the emperor. Judaism, and emergent Christianity, however, looked at the Old Testament for ideas of political legitimacy, which differed significantly from the surrounding Hellenistic theories. These latter, however, suggested a Christian version of political theology to some of the Church Fathers, but not without opposition.

What can, and more importantly, what can't he say? It was not merely a personal rivalry, but this very question, that drove William of St. Thierry (1080-1148) to consider the theology of Peter Abaelard (1079-1142) as a problem that needed to be dealt with. For him, the limits of the theological task as such were at stake. In William's eyes, Abaelard approached the Bible in a way too speculative and philosophical manner. In contrast, he understood his own theology as Biblical and true to the opinions of the Fathers, a sentiment he strongly expressed in his Expositio super Epistolam ad Romanos. In this paper I am going to discuss William's reception of Augustine, in order to present his own reading of Romans as firmly grounded in ecclesial tradition. Not only does he take up Augustine's thought, but he uses Augustine's biographical background – mainly his anti-Pelagian fervor – to support his own fight against heretical ideas, such as Peter Abaelard's or William of Conches'. This paper will explore how William introduced Augustine as a third player into his rising conflict with the school of Abaelard, both as authority in matters of theological content and methodology, and as a role model for his concrete political actions in the matter.

MAHONEY Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494) is without doubt one of the most intriguing figures of the Italian Renaissance. It is thus no surprise that he has attracted the attention of many modern scholars.     religions Article Catholics, Culture and the Renewal of Christian Humanism John Sullivan Theology Department, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool L16 9JD, UK; [email protected] Abstract: If Catholic educators are to equip students to engage with contemporary culture in a way that is credible and winsome, they need first, to be able to draw upon the living tradition of their faith appreciatively, critically and creatively, and second, to articulate a renewed form of Christian humanism. This paper addresses the second of these prerequisites by taking two steps towards the development of a Christian humanism for our times. First, I propose a rationale for the task of rethinking the case for Christian humanism as a resource for both cultural engagement and for educational practice. Second, I consider three potential sources and guides for becoming confident and competent in communicating this renewal of Christian humanism: Jacques Maritain, Romano Guardini and Pope Francis.
