The aim of this research is to pry into the decision making process of five Icelandic NGOs when applying for such funds and the ethical implications of those decisions. The NGOs are The Red Cross, The Church Aid, SOS Children’s Villages, Save the Children and ABC Children’s Aid. Explored are the NGOs’ connections with INGOs, their Codes of Conduct, their relations with the MFA and the factors that influence their selection of projects. The research is primarily based on interviews with NGO employees. While there is much variety in the NGOs practices, they have a common ambition for the advancement of their humanitarian efforts. The NGOs appear prone to apply for funds if emergencies occur close to their own projects, are in the MFAs focus areas, are emphasised by their INGO contacts, are considered extensive by the NGOs and if they believe their expertise is of use. -
International Federation Launches Preliminary Emergency Appeal For
Panama, 1 November 2007 International Federation launches preliminary emergency appeal for victims of Tropical Storm Noel The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is launching a preliminary emergency appeal for nearly 800,000 Swiss francs (US$ 677,00/€ 470,000) to help people affected by Tropical Storm Noel, which has pounded the Dominican Republic and Haiti with high winds and torrential rains. Mudslides and flooding have left more than 60 people dead in both countries and caused severe damage to infrastructure, including electrical lines, roads, bridges and thousands of homes. According to the Dominican authorities, some 25,000 people are homeless. Noel remains an active tropical storm moving towards the Bahamas. The funds will be used to provide 15,000 people (10,000 in the Dominican Republic and 5,000 in Haiti) with food, water, hygiene articles, kitchen sets, mosquito nets and tarpaulins, as well as psychological support, over the next six months. Since the onset of the emergency, the Dominican Red Cross has mobilized some 500 volunteers to perform search and rescue activities, provide first aid and help assess needs and damages. All Haitian Red Cross (HRC) volunteers in chapters located in the southern peninsula were mobilized. The HRC is also currently responding to the needs of people who were affected by Hurricane Dean. A plane loaded with relief items for 2,000 families (including hygiene articles, kitchen sets, jerrycans, mosquito nets and tarpaulins) will depart from Panama today (1 Nov) for the Dominican Republic. The Haitian Red Cross is distributing prepositioned emergency relief supplies. Several delegates from the Federation’s Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU), specialized in disaster management, telecommunications and logistics, have been deployed to the Dominican Republic to support Red Cross response and relief activities. -

OPERATIONAL UPDATE Response by Red Cross Society of China and National Societies in East Asia Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) From 12th – 17th February, the RCSC transport team has dispatched ambulance 221 times, transferring 722 patients, among which 380 were seriously or critically ill. A 156-member medical team covering respiratory, emergency critical care, cardiology, medical psychology, and other medical specialization fields has also been deployed from the Shanghai Red Cross Hospital to Hubei province. In order to facilitate the prevention and control 1 WHO Situation Report #31 of 20 February 2020 1 of the epidemic in Wuhan, RCSC and while coordinating the procurement of donated negative pressure ambulances, the RCSC has also called up competent forces and established a convoy for the rescue and transfer of critically ill patients. Red Cross emergency rescue teams in Chizhou and Anhui provinces have also set up 20 tents for the detection points of epidemic prevention and control at highway intersections and communities, have set up temporary offices for front-line workers, and have assisted in checking the temperature of persons within vehicles. -

DREF operation n° MDRIT001 GLIDE EQ-2009-000072-ITA Italy: Earthquake Update n° 2 27 April 2009 The International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross and Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of national societies to respond to disasters. Period covered by this update: 9 April to 23 April 2009. CHF 700,000 (USD 613,944 or EUR 460,808) has been allocated from the International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Italian Red Cross in delivering immediate assistance to 15,000 beneficiaries and to replenish emergency stocks. This DREF operation is an opportunity for Partner National Societies and donors to support the Italian Red Cross in its ongoing operations, and un-earmarked contributions to replenish the DREF are therefore highly encouraged. Summary: A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit central Italy on 6 April 2009. Some 290 people have been killed, around 1,000 Photo: Italian Red Cross operational centre injured and 48,000 made homeless. Several strong aftershocks hit the region in the following week. The Italian Red Cross is supporting the affected population with food and non- food items as well as psychological support in order to overcome the most urgent needs. This operation is expected to be implemented over a period of three months, and will therefore be completed by 7 July, 2009. -

International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Family Links Network Code of Conduct on Data Protection Version 1.0 November 2015 International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Family Links Network Code of Conduct _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Foreword This Code of Conduct (CoC) was drafted by a working group composed of representatives of the Austrian Red Cross (Claire Schocher-Döring), Belgian Red Cross (Flanders) (Axel Vande Veegaete, Nadia Terweduwe), British Red Cross (Mark Baynham and Emily Knox), German Red Cross (Jutta Hermanns), Red Cross EU Office (Olivier Jenard), International Committee of the Red Cross (Romain Bircher, Massimo Marelli, Katja Gysin) and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cross Societies (Christopher Rassi) (Working Group). Several other representatives of these organizations also took part in the drafting, discussions, and meetings, making important contributions. The Working Group began discussions on this project in late 2013, and has had several working meetings in Mechelen (April 2014), Brussels (July 2014), Vienna (September 2014), Sofia (November 2014), and London (January 2015), in addition to multiple phone conferences and e-mail exchanges. The CoC was adopted within the Working Group by consensus, incorporating feedback received from many National Societies. The CoC was deemed necessary due to (1) the many actors of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement) operating in the Family Links Network , and the need to transfer data within the Movement and to other actors, and (2) the changing regulatory environment in Europe and worldwide with regard to data protection laws and standards. The CoC sets out the minimum principles, commitments, and procedures that members of the Movement must comply with when processing data within the Family Links Network. -

A profile of the Red Cross in the EU Facts and Figures 2003 A Profile of the Red Cross in the European Union (EU) Facts and Figures In the EU, the Red Cross network represents over one million volunteers, employs 110,000 people and has over a thousand staff working internationally. Although each National Society belongs to a different social, political and cultural system and performs different tasks, all share the same basic unifying principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. In the EU, the Red Cross is a major provider of social and emergency services and a partner in policy discussions pertaining to humanitarian issues both within and outside the EU. Since 1983, the National Red Cross Societies of the EU, together with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, have established a representation and liaising office in Brussels, in order to facilitate cooperation between the EU National Societies and to bring the grass roots experience to the attention of the European institutions. This publication presents a profile of the 15 EU National Societies: their structure and main activities and their common interests within the EU context. It does not claim to be exhaustive. Realities, facts and figures change from day-to-day and we will update these profiles on a regular basis. The many challenges that lie ahead include the preoccupation of the Red Cross of how best to serve the most vulnerable in an ever changing environment; and the importance of its specific mandate and role within society being recognized by both national authorities and the EU Institutions.
