2020-2021 Traditional Learning and Remote Learning Student Code & Code of Conduct

In addition to the information in the Capt. Walter E. Clarke 2020-2021 Traditional Learning and Remote Learning Student & Student Code of Conduct, students must follow the Socorro Independent School District Student Handbook and Code of Conduct which can be found at the following link: https://www.sisd.net/Page/771 Students who return to On-Campus Traditional Learning:

Socorro ISD shall comply with State and City orders and guidance for return to school, to include Social Distancing and other Public Health Interventions, set forth by the City of El Paso Department of Public Health (DPH) Local Health Authority during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.

I. For student’s safety during COVID public health emergency, students shall not: • Fail to comply with directives given by school personnel (insubordination) • Leave school grounds or school-sponsored events without permission. • Disobey rules for conduct in district vehicles. • Refuse to accept discipline management techniques assigned by a teacher or principal. • Disregard Social Distancing and Other Public Health Interventions (i.e. face mask requirements) set forth by SISD.

II. For student’s safety during COVID public health emergency we are asking that you follow the protocols below for drop off and pick up: • Drop off time will begin at 7:30am. Parents must remain in their vehicles when dropping off and picking up their students. • Students will report directly to their 1st class through their assigned entrance. ▪ 6th grade through 200 hall entrance (see pictures on next page) ▪ 7th grade through 100 hall side entrance (see pictures next page) ▪ 8th grade through 300 hall entrance (see pictures on next page) • If absolutely necessary, to drop off students before 7:30am, arrangements must be made with administrations. • Students will be released by their last period teacher using wellness protocol systems. • All students who walk must leave school premises immediately. For safety and health reasons they will not be allowed to stay on the premises. Loitering will not be allowed. • Students being picked up will be at their designated drop off area in designated spots following social distancing guidelines. • Any students not picked up by 4:00 pm will be escorted inside the building where student will work on academic activities. Parents will need to pick up their students at the front entrance of school.

III. NO OUTSIDE FOOD or DELIVERIES • No birthday food celebrations • No outside food vendor lunch deliveries will be allowed (Ex. Fast Food/Restaurant Meal, etc.) • Student deliveries of any type will NOT be accepted (Ex. Flowers, Balloons, Stuffed Animals, etc.)

IV. 2020-2021 Policy (Traditional Learning) Student who return to campus for Traditional Learning, will be required to wear a and follow the campus uniform policy found below.

It is the philosophy of the Socorro Independent School District and Captain Walter Clarke Middle School that students should maintain high standards of dress, grooming, and appearance. SISD has established the following universal uniform options to compliment the other agreed upon school uniform options: • Khaki pants and a white polo without a school logo. • School uniform pants and a school colored without a school logo. • Physical education uniform bottoms ( or in any color) and a white, gray, or school colored t-shirt without a school logo. As per Policy FNCA (local), a universal uniform may be worn at any SISD School, which has elected to implement a school uniform policy.

V. Use of Technology Devices to Include Cell Phones: • Cell phones must be TURNED OFF from 8:30 am to 3:30pm & during afterschool tutoring (unless educators have allowed for their use for instructional purposes) • Student are only allowed to use their own cell phones during lunch or before or after school hours. • The following steps will be taken when an electronic device or cell phone is out and visible when they are not permitted:

• Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle School will not be responsible for theft of electronic items such as cell phones, IPod’s. Air Pods, earphones, laptops, smart , or any other electronic devices. These are high theft items and are brought onto school grounds at the owner’s own risk. o Instructional time will not be spent by teachers or administration investigating the loss or recovery of these items. o Students must pick up all confiscated items in a timely manner. At the end of each 9-week period all items will be donated to a local charity. It is the students and parents’ responsibility to collect any confiscated items. o On State Testing DAYS NO CELL PHONES or SMART WATCHES ALLOWED.

VI. Selling of Items by Students • Students are not allowed to sell any item for personal gain. The only items allowed to be sold are campus or district approved fundraisers.

VII. Tardy Policy • If a student reports to school after 8:30 a.m. they are considered tardy. After 3 tardies the scholar will receive lunch detention, after 8 tardies the student will receive a referral and be placed in In-School Suspension (S.A.C) for the day.

Students who do Online Remote Learning:

I. Use of Technology Devices to Include Cell Phones: • Cell phones must be TURNED OFF during online instruction (unless educators have allowed for instructional purposes) • Texting or playing games will not be allowed during instruction. • Televisions are to be turned off. • Technology must be used for instructional purposes only. • Technology will not be used to infringe on other students learning.

II. Tardy Policy • Students will log in at least two-minute before instruction begins. • Students who log on two minutes after the scheduled class will be considered tardy. • Parents will be contacted for students that are continuously tardy to their online courses. If the tardies continue, a conference will be scheduled with parent, student and administrator. • Restroom breaks – Students will notify the teacher for permission to use restroom according to the expectations set by each teacher. Students are encouraged to use the restroom during the transition time between classes and the lunch time.

IV. 2020-2021 Uniform Policy (Remote Learning)

During At-Home Remote Learning students are encouraged to wear their school . The use of uniforms creates a more positive environment where students are more focused on their learning. Students will be required to follow the Dress Code found in the Socorro Independent School District Student Code of Conduct found below.

The district’s dress code is set at a minimum standard by the district in Policy FNCA. The campus may adopt a more stringent code that meets the specific demands and needs of the campus and community.

• The district's dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, instill discipline, prevent disruption, avoid safety hazards, and teach respect for authority. • Students shall be dressed and groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not be a health or safety hazard to themselves or others. The district prohibits any clothing or grooming that in the principal’s judgment may reasonably be expected to cause disruption of or interference with normal school operations. A campus handbook may list specific examples of appropriate and inappropriate clothing, hair, jewelry, or manner of dress. • The district prohibits pictures, emblems, or writings on clothing that: i. Are lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene. ii. Advertise or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance prohibited by district policy. iii. Are evidence of membership or affiliation in any gang. • *The district prohibits PreK-8 grade students from having: i. Hair styles which cause undue attention or a health and/or safety hazard (spikes, Mohawks, etc.) ii. Unnatural hair colors which cause undue attention. • The student and parent may determine the student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the general guidelines set out above and the district's dress code for students in the campus handbooks and/or Code of Conduct/ Discipline Management Plan. • If the principal determines that a student's grooming violates the dress code, the student shall be given an opportunity to correct the problem. • Parents, teachers, students and other community members shall reach consensus in the decision to require uniforms, [FNCA (LOCAL)] Every campus electing to adopt and implement a school uniform policy shall include options to compliment the other agreed upon school uniform options: i. Khaki pants and a white polo shirt without a school logo; or ii. School uniform pants and a school colored polo shirt without a school logo. iii. Physical Education uniform bottoms (shorts or sweatpants in any color) and a white, grey, or school colored t- shirt without school logo.

Any parent having an item of concern regarding the student dress code or code of conduct will need to address the School Improvement Team Committee. The committee is made up of parents, faculty/staff, administration, and community representation. An appointment may be scheduled by contacting the school secretary and submitting your concerns in writing to be added to the agenda.
