Biographies for the 2019 Nominees for the NAIS Board of Trustees The nomination for board officer for the NAIS Board is:

• Monique DeVane, head of school, The College Preparatory School (CA), treasurer Monique DeVane has been the head of school at The College Preparatory School in Oakland, California since 2011. She began her career in college admission at Brown University, before becoming a guidance and college counselor. Monique has served in a range of senior leadership roles at both boarding and day schools on both coasts and in the Midwest. She has served on several nonprofit boards, including the Northeast Foundation for Children, The Thacher School (CA), and SSAT, as well as the advisory board of The Principals’ Center at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Monique holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational behavior from Brown University and a master’s degree in positive organizational development and change from Case Western Reserve University.

The nomination for a third term on the Trustees’ Slate is:

• Fran Bisselle, head of school, Hathaway Brown School (OH) Mary Frances "Fran" Bisselle became Hathaway Brown School’s 14th head in 2016. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Boston College, a master’s degree in liberal studies with a concentration in history from Wesleyan University, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies with a concentration in curriculum, instruction, and assessment from the University of Vermont. A graduate of the Klingenstein head fellowship program at Columbia University’s Teachers College, Fran also has served on several boards of trustees including the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, The Educational Records Bureau (ERB), Vermont Independent School Association, Council of Independent Schools, and NAIS. She currently holds memberships with The Headmasters Association, The Country Day School Headmasters’ Association, and The Head Mistresses Association of the East.

The nominations for a second term on the Trustees’ Slate are:

• Robin Appleby, head of school, The American School in (UK) Robin Appleby has been the head of school at The American School in London (UK) since 2018. She has spent more than 20 years working in American and IB curriculum schools in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. She was previously the director of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Robin was the superintendent of Dubai American Academy, a high school

1 principal at The American School of The Hague (Netherlands), the upper school director at Hathaway Brown School (OH), and senior dean and teacher of English at the Nichols School (NY). Robin holds a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, a master’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a master’s degree in organization development and analysis from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. She currently serves on the board of trustees and as treasurer of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is an ex-officio member of Chicago’s High Jump Board of Trustees. She has been involved in school accreditation teams for CIS and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

• Marguerite Roza, director of the Edunomics Lab at Georgetown University (WA) Marguerite Roza is the director of the Edunomics Lab and research professor at Georgetown University, where she serves as lead faculty for the certificate program in education finance. Her research focuses on quantitative policy analysis, particularly in the area of education finance. Recent research traces the effects of fiscal policies at the federal, state, and district levels for implications on resources at school and classroom levels. She has led projects including the finance and productivity initiatives at Center on Reinventing Public Education and Building State Capacity and Productivity Center, and she has served as senior economic adviser at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Author of Educational Economics: Where Do School Funds Go?, Marguerite has also been published by Brookings Institution, Public Budgeting & Finance, and Education Next.

• Eric Temple, head of school, Lick-Wilmerding High School (CA) Eric Temple currently serves as head of school at Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco. Previously, Eric headed The Carey School in San Mateo, California. He began his career teaching English and serving as the dean of students at Ojai Valley Upper School (CA), then moved to Crystal Springs Uplands School (CA), where he taught English, and was the dean of studies and assistant head of school. Eric has served on many school boards, as well as the California Association of Independent Schools board where he chaired the Secondary School Board of Standards. Four years ago, Eric joined the faculty of NAIS’s Institute for New Heads, where he teaches about understanding school culture and entry. He currently serves on the board of directors of the California Teacher Development Collaborative and the NAIS Commission on Accreditation. Eric attended the Klingenstein Center’s Summer Teaching Institute (’92), the Full Year Fellowship (’95), and the Visiting Head’s program (’10). He is one of the founding editors of Klingbrief, a monthly newsletter that identifies sources of interest to independent schools. Eric holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston College, a master’s degree in English literature from UMass Amherst, and an M.Ed. in educational leadership from Columbia University’s Teachers College.

The nominations for a first term on the Trustees' Slate are:

• Penny Evins, head of school, St. Paul’s School for Girls (MD) Penny is currently in her sixth year as head of St. Paul’s School for Girls in Baltimore and will be the incoming head for Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia (July 2019). She began her career at the Webb School of Knoxville (TN) as an upper school guidance counselor, ethics teacher, and

soccer coach, and a year later was tapped to serve as middle school head and teach English. She went on to serve as middle school counselor, teacher and coach and subsequently, strategic planning consultant and admission associate at The Lovett School (GA). Thereafter, Penny served as lower school head at Isidore Newman School (LA). Penny serves on the boards of The Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education, Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust, Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM), The Heads Network, and has previously served on boards of Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools (AIMS). Penny began her independent school experience at Isidore Newman School (LA)—where she’d later spend five years as head of lower school—and graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall (CT). She received a bachelor’s degree and M.Ed. from The University of Virginia.

• J. Ross Peters, head of school, St. George’s Independent School (TN) A coach and English teacher, Ross has served in significant leadership roles since the late ‘90s, and he has headed St. George’s Independent School in Memphis since 2015. He previously served at Providence Day School (NC), Asheville School (NC), (OH), and The Westminster Schools (GA). Ross serves on the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools board of directors, the Bridge Builders USA board of trustees, and the Family Partners Council at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.
