As I was reading this book one thought accompanied me throughout reading almost all of it: was this really published ? Later Printing. This is where McLuhan started his journey of exploration into how our tools, and means of storing and moving experience shape how we view the world; as well as how they extend our various faculties and appendages. The eventual title of the book reflects McLuhan's concern about the merging of sex and technology in advertising. By contrast, later, "the gangster hero stands in relation only to the laws of the land which he has defied. McLuhan's work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory. Limited hardbound edition of this "underground" classic, McLuhan's first book. The Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man [1] is a study of popular culture by Marshall McLuhan , treating newspapers, comics, and advertisements as poetic texts. What is meant is "rational detachment as a spectator" regarding the "world of social myths" similar to Barthes in Mythologies id. The latter still fascinates, while this one is just cute. McLuhan can still hold his own with his sharp and biting analysis of mass-media culture and the popular arts. Lapham Last week in Book Notes, we discussed Norman Mailer’s discovery in Superman Comes to the Supermarket of mediated America, that trifurcated world in which Americans live simultaneously in three realms, in three realities. One is based, more or less, in the physical world of nouns and verbs, which is to say people, other creatures, and things (objects) that either act or are acted upon. The second is a world of mental images lodged between people’s ears; and, third, and most importantly, the mediasphere. The mediascape is where the two worlds meet, filtering back and forth between each other sometimes in harmony but frequently in a dissonant clanging and clashing of competing images, of competing cultures, of competing realities. Two quick asides: First, it needs to be immediately said that Americans are not the first ever and certainly not the only 21st century denizens of multiple realities, as any glimpse of Japanese anime, Chinese Donghua, or British Cosplay Girls Facebook page will attest, but Americans first gave it full bloom with the “Hollywoodization,” the “Disneyfication” of just about anything, for when Mae West murmured, “Come up and see me some time,” she said more than she could have ever imagined.

    Automotive Apotheosis: An Exploration of Promotional Culture as Contemporary Mythology Kateryna Kurdyuk Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Media and Communications (by Thesis Only) March 2011 School of Culture and Communication University of Melbourne © Kateryna Kurdyuk 2011 Abstract This thesis proposes that contemporary promotional culture is the mythology of today. This hypothesis was first put forth by Marshall McLuhan in his 1951 book, The Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man, where he astutely observed that myth and poetry have been effectively colonized by promotional culture. Although it has been mainly overlooked by the academic community, this book is a cornerstone of the field of popular culture and mass media. In it, McLuhan was one of the first scholars to detect that folklore of industrial society is determined, not by education or religion, but by the mass media (McLuhan 1951). Over the decades, many scholars from various academic fields have observed the same trends, concluding that the myth-making faculty is thriving in contemporary society, and situating the strongest mythopoeic forces in worlds of entertainment and promotional culture. Nevertheless, these notions have not been sufficiently explored. Hence, in order to uncover the prevalent myth and poetry operating in contemporary society we must turn to promotional culture, and particularly to advertising, which McLuhan believes is as equivalent to collective society as dreams are to the individual (McLuhan 1951, p. 97). Myth is defined in this work as a universal narrative that reflects humanity’s collective unconscious projections and contains primordial forms, or archetypes. This thesis argues that advertising is mythopoeic and utilizes primordial archetypes.

I analyse literature which reveals how researchers are making use of Web technologies for knowledge dissemination, as well as how individuals are disempowered by the centralisation of certain systems, such as academic publishing platforms and social media. I share my findings on the feasibility of a decentralised and interoperable information space where researchers can control their identifiers whilst fulfilling the core functions of scientific communication: registration, awareness, certification, and archiving. The contemporary research communication paradigm operates under a diverse set of sociotechnical constraints, which influence how units of research information and personal data are created and exchanged. Economic forces and non-interoperable system designs mean that researcher identifiers and research contributions are largely shaped and controlled by third-party entities; participation requires the use of proprietary systems. From a technical standpoint, this thesis takes a deep look at semantic structure of research artifacts, and how they can be stored, linked and shared in a way that is controlled by individual researchers, or delegated to trusted parties. Further, I find that the ecosystem was lacking a technical Web standard able to fulfill the awareness function of research communication.

    COMPARING THE EARLY AND LATE MCLUHAN TO INNIS'S POLITICAL DISCOURSE By James P. Winter and Irving Goldman University of Windsor Marshall McLuhan frequently is referred to, and evaluated as, a disciple of Harold Innis. Certainly McLuhan and Innis were involved in a mutual exchange of ideas in the late 1940s and up until the latter's death in 1952. They put each other's works on their students' reading lists. But while McLuhan did rely extensively on Innis's work, there are two important caveats to be drawn as we set about our own comparison to add to the growing literature. First, there were many other influences on McLuhan besides Innis, including Wyndham Lewis, James Joyce, Edmund Carpenter, E.A. Havelock, etc. As such, it would be wise not to overstress the role of Innis in McLuhan's thought generally. Secondly, one would be remiss in inferring that McLuhan may be evaluated simply in terms of whether, or how well, he popularized some aspect of Innis's thought. There is much more to McLuhan than this, for as his student and critic has noted, McLuhan is a fundamental Twentieth Century writer who has contributed "to our understanding of communication, culture and technology in the contemporary world." (Theall, 1988:97). With these qualifications at the outset, we intend to elaborate crucial ideas of Innis, comparing and contrasting those of McLuhan. This in itself is a major undertaking, owing to the major controversies swirling around just what it is that these two men were talking about. To begin with Innis, there are numerous levels or dimensions from which his writings may be approached.
