A secret that deserves to be revealed. Hidden in the obvious and ready for you. If you really think you deserve a vacation other than the sea or skiing, we suggest that after the daily stresses, the rush and the constant commitment, you finally decide to replace the stone and the sea, the holm oaks and the pines with the shade of Slavonian oak, the ash, the thick forest arch of Gorski Kotar, the greenery of Međimurje... Head, therefore, to that part of our country which is within our reach, green and flat or hilly and golden in its summer or autumn colors, and yet mostly distant and unknown to the most.

  • In Former Yugoslavia Case Sheets
@'An Unknown Destination' "Disappeared" in former Yugoslavia Case sheets Vukovar, a small town in eastern Croatia with a multi-ethnic population of Croats, Serbs, Hungarians, Ruthenes, Ukranians and others, was the scene of the earliest mass "disappearance" in the former Yugoslavia. In August 1991, after the June declaration of independence by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), the town came under heavy attack from Serbian irregular troops supported by the Yugoslav National Army (JNA). The siege lasted until 18 November, when Croatian forces defending the town surrendered. Following the surrender, an agreement was signed by the commander of the JNA and the Croatian Government under the supervision of the European Community Monitoring Mission (ECMM) according to which patients and medical personnel would be evacuated from the town's hospital under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). However, on 19 November, forces of the JNA accompanied by paramilitary units entered the hospital and led patients and members of the hospital staff away. Of 444 people on the evacuation lists, only 128 eventually reached Croatia, along with a small number of medical workers. It is believed that many of those taken from the hospital were loaded into buses and driven to a collective farm at Ov_ara, about seven kilometres southeast of Vukovar. Some may have been killed on the spot. In 1992 an international team of forensic experts was able to make a preliminary excavation of an area near the farm. Here they discovered human remains, which showed strong signs that they had been unlawfully killed. They estimated that the grave contained the bodies of about 200 people, but the local Serb authorities have refused permission for a further investigation.

Law, Crime and History (2013) 2 JUSTICE AND GENOCIDE IN BOSNIA: AN UNBRIDGEABLE GAP BETWEEN ACADEME AND LAW? Gregory Kent1 Abstract: The 1992-95 war in Bosnia was the worst war on the European continent since WWII. The massive and systematic human rights violations were the worst in Europe since the Holocaust. This article proposes, based on a provisional review of non-legal, mainly social science and humanities literature on the Yugoslav crisis, and on a focused analysis of genocide jurisprudence, that there is a gulf between, on the one hand, academic interpretations of these human rights violations as constituting genocide – with some notable exceptions - and on the other, judicial decisions regarding cases brought at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) (and partly the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda - ICTR).

Signature:…………………………….. iii UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX Maria Djolai Ph.D. Development Studies WHEN THE ROOFTOPS BECAME RED AGAIN: POST-WAR COMMUNITY DYNAMICS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA Summary My thesis explores post-war community formation following the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995), the deadliest European violent conflict since WWII. The study draws on 18 months of fieldwork and mixed methods data collection in two small towns, Stolac in Southern Herzegovina and Kotor Varoš in Northern Bosnia, which were exposed to intense violence. The thesis uses the concept of community as analytical optic to avoid ethnic “groupism” perspective, which so often obscures the complexity of social relations and the dynamics of communal life in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
